Hey, Ted: Still Think We're Losing?

As y'all have probably been following, I've been discussing the War in Iraq with a new reader, Ted.

Ted seems to think that President Bush's plan isn't working, and the best thing we can do is the Democrat's "plan", and pull our Soldiers out of Iraq.

Ted is wrong.

This just in from Drudge:

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said that the US military presence in Iraq keeps neighbors from invading his country.

"The American presence has always prevented any kind of foreign invasion to Iraq," Talabani said.

"That's one of the main reasons why we think that we need an American presence, even symbolical, in the country to prevent our neighbors attacking us," he said at a forum at the Woodrow Wilson Center, a Washington think thank.

Talabani also said Baghdad could not "further tolerate" neighbors' interference in its internal affairs.

"I think that our neighbors must understand that our patience is limited," he said, refusing to single out countries but adding "we mean all of them."

Iraq shares borders with Syria, Iran, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Asked if there was concern over aggression from Turkey, Talabani said: "I don't think there is any danger for invasion by Turkey to Iraq."

Iraq has "good relations" with the government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and could help Ankara in its conflict with the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), he said.

"We could convince PKK to stop fighting in Turkey," the Iraqi leader said.

Talabani also insisted that Iraq would not spiral down into civil war.

"There would be no civil war. We have problems, we have some kind of extremists who are fighting against each other. They are not representing the whole society," he said.

He also defended the US military presence in Iraq.

"The immediate departure of coalition forces would only unleash the terrorists," Talabani said. "I cannot promise when or how the American presence will completely end in Iraq but I can promise that American soldiers do not fight in vain."

As I said before, before pulling out of Iraq, we need to do a serious "gut check" to see if that would provide any stability for the region.

Ask the Somalis if American Pullouts bring stability.

Ask the former South Vietnamese if American Pullouts bring any kind of stability.

We should stick to the plan: stand up a strong, stable, democratic government in Iraq. Train and strengthen their Army to defend their people, and to hunt down and kill or capture terrorist forces operating in the country.

Use the strong, stable, democratically elected government in Iraq as a catalyst for stability and reform in the region as a whole. The people living under tyranny and subjugation in Iran will say "Hey...If the Iraqis can have that, we can have that!"

People throughout the region will see that religious extremism offers nothing but anarchy and death, and they will police their own.

Hamas, Hizbullah, and scores of other terrorist organizations will be forced to either give up their murderous tactics, or be hunted down and killed by the citizens of the countries they bully and extort.

Only through Freedom and Democracy, can you have stability and change in the Middle East.

"This is not a battle of civilizations, this is a battle for civilization..."

Ted: you don't like the plan, fine. Go and vote. Maybe your side can win, and we'll pull out.

But unless you're on the ground with me, fighting my war, leave me be and let me fight it. You want peace? Give me more bullets.

I'll make sure it gets won.

Can you say that your "plan" to "cut and run" will accomplish Victory?

Wow. Yesterday was a busy day in terms of posting...

Today, supporting us in the Rolling Victory Fast, is the famous AuntyBrat, along with my two buddies, Chris Tanner and Protest Warrior's Concrete Bob!

Already a veteran RVF participant, AuntyBrat knows the deal! And we all know that Chris T and Concrete Bob are also such great supporters of not only the RVF, but the whole US military, as well.

Well, looks like I'm sharing the duty with some great people.
At midnight last night, I said a small prayer, and finished off the last of the pizza.
Woke up at 0500 and grabbed a shower while Mama made coffee. Kissed Mama and drove up to Quantico, THE CROSSROADS OF THE MARINE CORPS, to continue my on-site observations of the contractor doing nothing. In all fairness, they are striping the new turn lane for the Marine Corps Heritage Center.
This is also the debut of MY new blogsite, DCProtestWarrior, a link to which is included.

Deserter Crybaby Is Homesick: Wants To Come Home...

VETERAN OF WAR IN IRAQ UNABLE TO GET JOBS OR HEALTH INSURANCE IN CANADA

Lexington's Darrell Anderson says he would rather come home -- even if it means facing prison for deserting from the U.S. Army -- than continue a lonely and uncertain life in Canada.

As for those who brand him a coward, Anderson declares, "I'm a combat veteran; I've been to Baghdad and back. What have they done?" But Anderson insists he has no regrets about fleeing to Canada in January 2005 and publicly opposing the war in Iraq.

I didn't run off like a crybaby to Canada. As a matter of fact, I turned down reassignment so I could frickin' go back.

Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.

People who run to Canada to escape the oath they swore to uphold, don't deserve to even say those words out loud.

This is just straight-up dishonorable.

Some members of the Left, realizing how hard it would be to wrest our grip from the War on Terror and our efforts to protect America, have decided on a different course of action:

They'll "starve" us.

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) will chair the powerful Ways and Means Committee if Democrats win control of the House next year, but his main goal in 2007 does not fall within his panel’s jurisdiction.

“I can’t stop this war,” a frustrated Rangel said in a recent interview, reiterating his vow to retire from Congress if Democrats fall short of a majority in the House.

But when pressed on how he could stop the war even if Democrats control the House during the last years of President Bush’s second term, Rangel paused before saying, “You’ve got to be able to pay for the war, don’t you?”

Rangel’s views on funding the war are shared by many of his colleagues – especially within the 73-member Out of Iraq Caucus.

Some Democratic legislators want to halt funding for the war immediately, while others say they would allocate money for activities such as reconstruction, setting up international security forces, and the ultimate withdrawal of U.S. troops.

“Personally, I wouldn’t spend another dime [on the war,]” said Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.).

Woolsey is among the Democrats in Congress who are hoping to control the power of the purse in 2007 to force an end to the war. Woolsey and some of her colleagues note that Congress helped force the end of Vietnam War by refusing to pay for it.

And people like Rep. Woolsey left guys like Tanker Dad high and dry in Vietnam.

What would have happened, if we we'd have toughed it out and stayed the course in Vietnam? What would have happened if we'd ignored the Anti-War Left back during that time?

I'll tell you what would have happened... Vietnam would be a Democracy right now, and not an impoverished, crumbling Communist country.

Siagon wouldn't have fallen, and thousands of South Vietnamese wouldn't have been butchered in the aftermath of the War.

Is that what the Left wants? Blackhawk helicopters evacuating the last remaining personnel from the US Embassy in Baghdad as it's being overrun by insurgents and radical Muslim extremists, as ordinary peace-loving Iraqis are being murdered and butchered for being "collaborators with the Americans"?

An Iraqi Army and Police that crumble because we left them high and dry before they were ready to assume control of their own country?

A new, centrally located "safe haven" for Radical Islam, right smack-dab by the Muslim Holy sites of Karbala and Najaf?

A weakened ally in the Middle East, ripe for invasion and takeover by Iran?

Bang-up job, there, Chuck, looking out for the Iraqi people.

Not to mention forcing the US Military to abandon a fight we believe in, a fight we want to win.

A fight we HAVE to win, for the sake of America, her future, and the security of the American people.

Tanker Brothers and Sisters... if this doesn't pi55 you off, I don't know what will. All I can say is this:

Vote your conscience.

The president rejected claims that the U.S. presence in Iraq has increased terror threats, saying the United States wasn't in Iraq when America was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001; or when the USS Cole was hit; or when the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya were bombed.

"If we weren't in Iraq, they'd find some other excuse because they have ambitions. They kill to achieve their objectives," Bush said. "The best way to protect America is to defeat these killers overseas so we don't have to face them at home."

Holy Sheemoly. He DID say it!

This, in my honest opinion, is a masterful stroke by the President.

Keep the American Public focused on the War. Remind them who has pledged to keep them safe, and remind them who has buried their heads in the sand. Renew faith in the fight, and remind the American People of the goal. Releasing that report for public consuption does more talking than any speech he could have ever made at this point.

Everything else is going very, very well for America: Gas Prices are low, the economy is strong, Unemployment is very low, very few hurricaines. This leaves the Left with only one big issue: the War.

And I honestly think that the vast majority of America knows we're in the right fight, at the right time.

I originally wanted to respond to trolling, only in the comments section where it was posted.

Then, I decided that I needed to put this on the front page, becasue I want absolutely no misunderstandings, no questions to our motivations. Here goes:

Mike Ray, allow me to rebut.

My leaders do not "cheapen this war", on the contrary, they have a very clear goal: the security of the American people and the spread of Democracy in a very volatile region as a catalyst for stability. As my Commander-In-Chief, and my Hero, has stated so eloquently before: "This isn't a battle of civilizations, this is a battle for civilization."

Now, think about what I just said, and I want you to consider it for a moment before we continue.

Radical Islam, the hijacking of what was once a peaceful ideology, is a threat to both Middle Eastern Political Stability, and the security of the Western World. Remember, we did not first attack Muslims, Radical Muslims attacked us.

The War we are fighting, the Global War on Terror, is a fight against that radical ideology, and a struggle to bring Freedom and self-rule to Afghanistan and Iraq.

In that mission, we have been successful.

I will never forget the feeling of "I am making history" as the Iraqi people participated in the first free election in two generations. And I knew they had the freedom to vote because of my efforts, and the efforts of my little brother, and all our comrades-in-arms. We had brought the vision of our Commander-In-Chief to fruition. And, if you were military, you have an understanding of what "Commander's Intent" means.

Now, the fight against Islamo-Fascism is a bigger fight, and it will be a long fight. We are fighting a war of ideas, a war where words and deeds can be more lethal than bullets or bombs. But bullets and bombs do the job of defeating the immediate, physical threat. I am 100% committed to making sure that we win this war.

Which leads me to your attack on my understanding of my oath. Allow me to remind you what it says:

"I, (Master Gunner), do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

Now listen up.

I AM supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies, foreign and domestic. And in that, I am supporting and defending what that document represents: the hopes and aspirations, the security and well-being, of the American People. We were attacked by Radical Muslims dating back to 1993 (the original WTC attack), through the bombing of the USS Cole and our embassies in Africa, and 9/11. There has not been a successful attack on our soil since. And that's because we're taking the fight to the enemy.

I AM obeying the orders of my Commander-In-Chief, and the officers appointed over me, according to the UCMJ. But to be honest, I would support this fight, even if I wasn't ordered to deploy. Because I believe in my heart of hearts that it is man's natural inclination to live in Freedom, and to reject subjugation. That's why you will never, ever find a nation that lives under tyranny that has a vibrant economy. That's why nations like Iran and Syria will never, ever be big players on the world stage. That's why nations that live under tyranny will always have problems with literacy and the inability to support the basic needs of their own people. And that is why they play up to the United Nations so much.

So, in summary, I believe in this fight, and while it IS true that I have an obligation to reject orders that are contrary military law, I have yet to recieve such an order.

As to your final question:

So where does your allegiance reside, with you oath to the US Constitution or to your President?

The answer is quite simple. Read the oath above (which I just recently reaffirmed, for the fourth time).

My allegiance resides with my Constitution, my President, and ultimately, the American People.

I think my actions, and my record, shows this.

Today, we're joined by Devildog6771 and Cindy in Ohio. Cindy and DevilDog 6771 has chosen this day to honor SSG Matt Maupin, Missing In Action in Iraq since 2004:

I'm doing my fast today in honor of Matt Maupin, a local soldier from Batavia, Ohio. He was captured on 04/09/04 in Iraq, in an attack near the Baghdad Airport. He is in the Army Reserve 724th Transportation Company. He was recently promoted to Staff Sergeant. He has a brother who is in the Marines. His parents, Keith and Carolyn Maupin, started a Yellow Ribbon Support Center here in Ohio where they collect necessities for the troops and send out packages. Each package has a picture of Matt. His parents have also donated computers and there are now 3 Matt Maupin computer labs. The computers are equipped with web cams to help soldiers stay in touch with their families.

Two Commanders-In-Chief: An After-Action Review

This has been a busy media two weeks for the office of the President of the United States.

Former President Bill Clinton and current Commander-In-Chief President Bush both had their separate run-ins with the Media. Chris Wallace interviewed Clinton, and Matt Lauer interviewed President Bush.

I think y'all know who came out on top.

I just came up with some "Strength, Weeakness, Sustain, and Improve" bullets for each of them. I'm interested in what you think of the two interviews, and who you think was better.

Clinton Strengths:
1. Very well-spoken, persuasive speaker. Was trying to pull out all stops to convince Chris Wallace that he tried everything he could to get Bin Laden.
2. Masterful at his attempts to steer the conversation back to the Global Charity he's working on.
3. Very good in his attempts to deflect criticism, and failing that, feign "injury" when Wallace wasn't buying it.

Bush Strengths:
1. Great job at using body language to not let Lauer intimidate. "On the offensive" posture speaks volumes on his foreign policy and how we fight the War on Terror.
2. Didn't mince words or use flowery speech. Took personal responsibility for the War and how we are fighting it: "I have a responsibility to protect this country, to protect your family, Matt."
3. Lauer couldn't pin him down and pounce, but it wasn't due to any fancy footwork. President Bush just used brute force and logic to defy wordplay.

Clinton Weaknesses:
1. Looked whiny, came across as a "big conspiracy" was attacking him.
2. Refused to "man up" on getting Bin Laden when he had the chance. Tried to pawn it off of the CIA and FBI "not being able to certify" or some such nonsense. Too bad "Dereliction Of Duty" tells the real story.
3. Needs to wear longer pants or longer socks. Pretty unnerving to see a dude's shins over his socks when he's sitting down.

Bush Weaknesses:
1. Sometimes, a little too passionate in making a point. Scared the hell out of Lauer when he lunged forward. I honestly thought he was gonna b*tch-slap Matt Lauer. Now THAT would have been good TV!
2. Facial expressions: the President has a low tolerance for the stupidity of the media, and it comes across in his facial expressions. He should watch that.
3. Doesn't bring the conversation back to the reason that we are fighting the War enough. It's a simple, powerful point, but you need to keep coming back and reminding people of that awesome "Clash for Civilization" line.

Clinton Sustain:
* Keep up with the word ballet. Any way you can turn away criticism and direct it somewhere else, if good for you (considering your ineffectiveness in recognizing and defeating the threat back in the 90's).

Bush Sustain:
* The passion of your arguements. Conviction and sincerity are simple sentiments, and you need to keep them simple. Always maintain the high ground.

Clinton Improve:
* Cut the crap with the whining. Seriously. First the 9/11 movie, then the crying about the criticism you get about your lack of action in the 90's. No one is buying it. There is no "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" trying to bring you down: you were your own worst enemy. To maybe 40% of the American people, you were a hero, but to the other 60%, you are a joke. You won't change opinions that are that deeply held. Live with it. And it's always bad to throw the conspiracy blanket over your interviwer. That's just grasping at straws.

Bush Improve:
* Don't "reach out" to the Left. They aren't going to wake up one day and magically turn into "Pro-War Conservatives". They are lost. The Conservatives have a majority (no matter how weak), and you need to continue to inspire them. Solidify your base, and let them do the fighting in the trenches. They can actually reach out and touch their neighbors, debate over coffee, try to convert them one-on-one. While your words and convictions are powerful, you need to come to grips with the fact that the outlets for putting out that message will never, ever paint you in a positive light. So keep it simple, but keep it strong.

Obviously, this critique is a little slanted (y'think?), but I think I brought up some pretty good points.

What The Hell Is Wrong With Mel Gibson?


You know, I really used to respect Mel Gibson.

I liked "The Patriot". I liked "Braveheart". I liked "The Passion of the Christ".

Then he fell off the deep end. And no one has seen the "Good" Mel Gibson since.

Now, of course Time and Newsweek are falling over each other to put this guy's movie on their cover. In all fairness, he is a very talented actor and director.

Now, can someone point out to me how in the hell that makes him an expert on the Iraq War or on American Civilization?

Mel Gibson basically just spit on everything that every US Soldier has done to bring stability to that region.

He even said "What's human sacrifice, if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?"

I cannot believe he could take something as selfless as Military Service, and reduce it down to something as primal as Human Sacrifice. I can not believe he just trivialized and cheapened the time I spent there, doing my duty.

He must still be drunk.

US Army Freedom Team Salute Program

Okay, this isn't so much for my civilian readers as it is for my military readers:

Do you have someone in your support chain (and I mean your civilian support chain: like "Household 6") that you would like to recognize?

The Army has started Freedom Team Salute program, where US Soldiers can nominate parents, spouses, or other Veterans for special recognition.

It's a pretty good program, and just a small way for a Soldier to say "Thanks for watching my back" to the people he fights for.

There is also a way for retired Veterans to nominate people that they would like to recognize for having supported them while they served their country:

In these demanding times, we are all Soldiers for freedom. We cannot do our jobs without the support of our families and employers. By nominating a member of your support team, you will recognize them for their valiant effort in supporting a great cause – you! And that’s why you should become a part of the U.S. Army’s Freedom Team Salute.

The Freedom Team Salute gives Active, Reserve and National Guard Soldiers an opportunity to recognize parents, spouses and employers for the support and strength they provide, while you serve to protect our freedom and the American way of life. The Freedom Team Salute is a recognition program and provided at no cost to the recipient or nominator.

Freedom Team Salute (FTS) is an official program sponsored and funded through the office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs (M&RA). It is not a fund-raising project but is intended to honor those who support our U.S. Army active-duty Soldiers, Reservists, and Guardsmen, as well as honor U.S. Army veterans who have served this nation, including those who served in the Reserves or Guard. All material is provided at no cost to either the nominator or the recipient.

As a special thanks to our Nation's veterans, the Army would like to send a Freedom Team Salute to veterans for their dedicated service and continued support of today's Soldiers.

Call it masochistic, call it morbid curiosity, whatever.

The bottom line is this: I read it. And I'm not happy when I do:

They joined the military into college, or out of the ghetto, or because of its seemingly studly glamour. "I saw a Marine when I was in high school," Sergeant Robert Sarra recalls in a new documentary. "And I was like, that's it! They're mean, they're tough, they got cool uniforms, and chicks dig 'em." That image barely survived through Sarra's basic training--brainwashing, he and other young men now call it. As for combat, he found it less like a Top Gun video game, shooting MiGs out of the sky, and more like Grand Theft Auto, bombing civilians crossing a Baghdad street.

Patricia Foulkrod's The Ground Truth, released in theaters last week and available on DVD next week, is both horrifying and hopeful. The first half of the film contains terrible, pulverizing footage from the Iraqi theater and testimony of atrocities that still haunt the men who saw or committed them. The second half is about the challenges these soldiers faced when they returned home, many of them with damaged bodies, most of them forced to relive their nightmares every night. One young man came back and hanged himself with a garden hose; another, fearful of demons attacking him, sleeps with a gun under his bed.

For most of the men and women appearing here, the best therapy was getting active: agitating for veterans' rights and a greater awareness of the war's human cost. And there's the hope the film leaves its viewers with. These articulate, caring young people are our best and bravest. Some of them should be in Congress, as the nagging conscience of the U.S. adventure in Iraq. Their passion makes The Ground Truth by far the finest film to emerge from the awful tangle of 9/11 and the Iraq war.

Why is that that people seek out Soldiers who have problems when they return home from War? The overwhelming number of Soldiers and Marines come back and are chompin' at the bit to go back. They don't sleep with guns under their beds, they don't hang themselves with garden hoses, they don't do anything crazy.

They are your friends and neighbors. They come back, and they go about their normal lives. If they are active duty Soldiers, they go back to training. They spend time wth their families, and they train to go back and finish the job.

I'm not saying that the subjects of this movie are dishonorable. Not by a long shot. They did their duty, and they are having problems adjusting upon their return. I get that.

But I also know for a fact that the US Military has probably one of the best counseling programs in the world for post-trumatic stress. They have aggressive counseling schedules, they have doctors and certified therapists who care, and have specialized training in helping servicemen and women who have been through combat. But the weak link in the chain is the desire for the serviceman to seek help.

Warriors fight and win, even through adversity. If they need help, they aren't scared to ask for it. And then they "Charile Mike" (continue mission).

"The Ground Truth" (the title of this movie), isn't the ground truth at all. It's some stories from some guys who saw things a certain way, as told by a director who has neither seen nor experienced any of it. In that sense, it's not "The Ground Truth" at all.

If you want the ground truth, talk to and read the stories of the thousands upon thousands of men and women, Warriors, who have been there and are proud of their deeds. Talk to, and read the stories of, the thousands upon thousands of men and women, Warriors, who don't sleep with guns under ther beds, or hang themselves with garden hoses.

Go to Milblogging.com. There are 1510 different stories there. Some of them are positive. Some of them are negative. But all of them are true.

And that is The Ground Truth.

That being said, I have an idea for a movie: Two brothers, both in the US Army, deploy to Iraq, side by side. Both of them see the Iraq War from very different perspectives: but both come to the same conclusion. We're there to fight, win, and eventually stand up a stable and strong Iraq. These guys go to the chow hall together, they go to the gym together, they go running three times a week. You hang out with them as they sneak Diet Cokes out of the chow hall, you hang out with them as they visit Basil the DVD merchant to get that weeks new releases. You sit next to one of them as he rolls out to set up a Traffic Control Point, you look over the other's shoulder as he hauls tail down the deadly Route Irish ("IED Alley") enroute to the "Green Zone".

Now, you won't walk away shaking your head, thinking that we shouldn't be in Iraq. But you won't walk away with a head full of bull5hit, like in Patricia Foulkrod's movie.

You'll walk away with "The Ground Truth".

And you can take that to the Motor Pool.

You think I could get Time Magazine or Michael Moore interested? (Nah.)

Chris managed to get a few days leave before he heads off to his permanent unit. He's home, and I love it, and the days are flying by too quickly! Naturally, he's been dividing his time between his family and friends...somehow, his friends seem to be getting more of his "awake" time-but, I can't begin to express the feeling I get when I look in on him, sleeping in his old room (which is actually now, his sister's room.) I get choked up, seeing them both sleeping so peacefully-my babies....sigh!

Yesterday, he and I made a trip to the local Army surplus store. I've never been and was amazed at all the cool Army stuff for sale there! Bumper stickers, banners and t-shirts-Oh My!!! Chris found a 101st license plate for his car, and he educated me on the different uniforms belonging to the different branches of the military. I bought stuff I didn't need, and can't wait to go back for more!

I hadn't been "shopping" with Chris for a long time-even before he left for basic training, so I enjoyed every minute of it. All the little things I used to take for granted are now precious memories for me to hold in my heart. Now, every time I go to that little surplus store, I will remember my first trip there-the one I took with my son.

The Problem Is, Sir, That You Didn't Try!



This is what really irritates me.

President Clinton passed on Bin Laden back in the 90's. It's a well known fact, and has been corraborated by many, many people.

I wish he would just be a man, and say "Hey, I made a bad call." Then he could maintain some honor.

Everybody already knows it, Sir. Nobody cares. It was a whole decade of bad calls made by you.

That's one of the reasons I spent a pretty big chunk of the 1990's stationed in Germany.

Having you as a Commander-In-Chief was a bit more tolerable from way over there.

But not by much.

Building A Bridge Across The Religious Divide...

I found an interesting letter in FloridaToday that was written by a reader who called the outrage over the Pope's comments as utter madness.

In the latest "religion of peace" lunacy, Muslims are up in arms over a papal quote.

Pope Benedict XVI recently repeated the words of a 14th century Byzantine emperor, stating, "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

Self-evident truth being what it is, we might recall that the Byzantine Empire was eventually conquered by Muslim Ottoman Turks.

Isn't it surprising then that some of the loudest outcry over the Pope's quote came from the Turkish government, which made the priceless statement, "Anyone who describes Islam as a religion as intolerant encourages violence"?

In other words, Islam is a peaceful religion of tolerance and Muslims will bomb, torture and kill anyone who says otherwise.

The Turks also said that the comments are not helpful because Muslims "have been trying to bridge the gap, calling for dialogue and understanding between religions."

So that's why Muslims knocked down the Twin Towers. They were planning to use the concrete and steel to build a bridge across the religious divide so we crazy Westerners would realize how peaceful Islam is.

Now, I already know how Tanker Brothers and Sisters feel about the issue, but I find it interesting that so many other people are starting to wake up to the fact that the "Religion Of Peace" isn't quite so peaceful.

I'm all for allowing Christianity and Islam to peacefully co-exist. However, when one side consistently attacks the other, and vows to spread the religion by force if necessary, then the other side has no choice but to defend itself. I don't think that view is unreasonable.

Consider, for example, the War on Terror: while it's true that both Afghanistan and Iraq are predominantly (ok, who am I kidding, make that overwhelmingly) Muslim, we went there to spread Democracy, not convert people to Christianity. Any allegations by Muslim Extremists of Westerners on a modern Crusade against Islam are baseless.

The Left has done such a bang-up job of attempting to strip any shred of religion, and Judeo-Christian values, from our society; I don't think the United States could mount a religious Crusade, even if we wanted to.

That, Tanker Brothers and Sisters, is one of our weaknesses: we have turned "Freedom of Religion" to "Freedom from Religion", and as a result, our children as a whole lack the same committment and values as their parents and grandparents. For Islam, however, the Separation of Chruch and State is an alien concept. The Church is the State. As a result, there is little, if any, disparity between the two.

Think about it like this: if the Mullas or Imams in Iran say that a Muslim Holy War (Jihad) should be waged against the United States, then that serves to effectively mobilize the entire country behind that one purpose. We haven't seen any commitment like that here in the United states since WWII.

The US is incredible in the sense that we are the strongest, smartest, wealthiest, and most developed country in the world. Period. We are not the world's Last Superpower: we are literally the world's Hyper Power. (While I agree that sounds pretty cheesy, I have actually read that in some pretty reputable publications). Now, if that is true, imagine if President Bush had the same power over the populace of our country as an Iranian Mullah/Imam/whatever has over the Iranian people.

This War on Terror would have been won by the United States and the West, at least a couple of years ago.

Two longtime readers, Leta and Gunnut, are carrying the Rolling Victory Fast baton today! Leta sent us something she wanted us to post:

I couldn't be more proud or honored to take on my 4th day of fasting since the beginning of the RVF AND that this day is being shared with my new friend GunnNutt. I FINALLY met GunnNutt a couple of weeks ago when I went to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Freep outside the gates of WR in
honor and support of as well as RESPECT to our wounded heroes. Prior to the Freep GunnNutt took me to the Mologne House where I met several of our wounded heroes and some of their families. To say that my life changed on that day would be less than an understatement. Inspirational, motivational, uplifting, emotional (in a positive way), and heart warming are just a FEW of the adjectives I would use to describe the experience at the Mologne House.

Fasting, prayers, care packages, cards and email, while important and necessary to show our military how much we love and support them, hardly seem enough for the sacrifices they and their families are making on our behalf.

So, today is for ALL deployed military personnel but I'd like to mention a few specifically - my new "friends" at the Mologne House - Chuck, Rob, PD and Mason, ALL of the Civil Affairs Soldiers with whom I have had the privilege of working side by side in Kosovo over the past 14 months and my "adopted" Soldiers now serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo.

GunnNutt, as our military personnel often say, I can't think of a better "wingman" to have with me today!

Dhi Qar Province: Success Story


BAGHDAD — The Government of Iraq took control of the southern province of Dhi Qar on Thursday in a move Coalition officials called "another sign of progress toward a stable and secure Iraq," placing the country one step closer to full self governance.

Dhi Qar is the second of Iraq’s 18 provinces transferred to provincial Iraqi control. With the change in status, Coalition security forces are helping local police and the Iraqi military take full control of security in the region.

Coalition officials and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki say they hope to have all 18 of the country’s provinces under Iraqi control by the end of next year.

"Today we received the security file for the province of Dhi Qar which follows the handover of Al-Muthanna," al-Maliki said during the handover ceremony.

"We will continue to receive control of other provinces as we manage to get our country back from the hands of the Ba’ath dictatorship."

Coalition Forces continue to make progress in Iraq, as yet another province is handed over to the Iraqi Government.

We're seeing a good correlation between the readiness of Iraq forces to provide security of provinces, and the handover of those provinces to Iraqi control.

Keep in mind, the President has been saying this since the end of the first phase of the Iraq War (the toppling of the regime), and while we have seen more insurgent activity in some provinces and less in others, the transition of those provinces back to Iraqi responsibility has gone remarkably well.

The bottom line is this: when Iraqi Forces are trained and able to take over responsibility for security of a given province, the responsibility for that province is turned back over to the control of the Iraqi Army.

All of this is happening according to the plan.

US Army Meets Recruiting Goal!

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Army is ending its best recruiting year since 1997 and expecting similar success in 2007, despite the weight of grim war news from Iraq, Army Secretary Francis Harvey said Thursday.

In an Associated Press interview, Harvey said the Army will enlist its 80,000th soldier on Friday, reaching its goal for the year with eight days to spare. That is a considerable turnaround from last year when the Army missed its target for the first time since 1999 and by the widest margin in more than two decades.

To truly put this into perspective, you have to see this in the context of the Global War on Terror: we need more Soldiers than we did back in the 90's. I've written how the Clinton Administration had gutted the US Army, out of the misconception that we no longer needed as lethal a force in light of the fall of the Soviet Empire.

Obviously, the Clinton administration was dead wrong (and I have alluded to this in the past). The Army is still recovering from the 1990's I have argued, many times, that one of the motivations of the "stripping down" of our forces was to make the culture more "accepting" to allowing openly gay people to join the military - one of Clinton's campaign promises back in '92.

Now that we are in a struggle of civilizations struggle for civilization in the Middle East, we need more Soldiers than we ever have.

It's a different war that we are fighting in 2006.

The war we fight today is one of counter-insurgency. It's a grind, and it is very manpower-intensive.

The Army goes through, in my honest opinion, phases of evolution. When we were fighting Vietnam, the Army was Infantry-heavy, based on the fight that was being conducted. In the late 70's, 80's, and early 90's, the Army was very manuever-oriented (Tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, etc...)

For this war, we need a mix of forces that are agile, lethal, lighter, and more situationally aware than ever before. The Army has made unprecedented progress in evolving its forces to meet the threat of Global Terrorism. The average light infantryman of 2006 is better trained, equipped, and has a better tactical understanding of his mission than any other US Soldier in any other war we have ever fought in.

We take immature kids (of all ages, 17-40), and turn them into Soldiers. And we do it well. And they keep reenlisting because they believe in the fight, and they believe in the mission. And it makes me proud to be a member of an organization of that caliber.

Now, I'm not gonna lie to myself: the days of die-hard, bone-headed, crusty old tankers like me are numbered.

But it's a hell of a ride!

Why Burying Your Head In The Sand Never, Ever Works...

Do you remember how wishy-washy the Germans were in supporting us in the War in Iraq?

Gerhard Schroeder, the previous Chancellor of Germany, offered absolutely no support for the War in Iraq, and even spoke out against it (and won an election based on Anti-American sentiment).

This is what burying your head in the sand, and refusing to recognize that this is a War of Cultures, and that Terrorists and extremists don't recognize boundaries and affiliations in their quest to impose their religion on the entire world:

Bandit Three Six: "Why They Want Us To Leave"

It's always good to go out and get another viewpoint on the same problem, in case you missed something.

Bandit Three Six (who is now my wingman on the Military.com Blog - make sure to congratulate him!) brings up his frustration with the "Cut and Run" crowd, and how this war and National Healthcare go hand-in-hand!

Why is it so difficult for people to realize that we need to finish our work here? Perhaps I lack a strategic political perspective, but I just can't understand why Americans don't want us to accomplish our mission. They may say they support us and I've said my piece on that issue, but opposing our mission while we're fighting and dying for it is just plain nuts.

I fear that petty politics and short-sightedness at home are now our biggest obstacles to victory here in Iraq.

On another issue, I was talking with a buddy a while ago and we started talking about staying in versus leaving Iraq. He brought up the point that people say that we should leave Iraq so that the money used to support us here could be spent on things like health care. He then made the point that defense spending IS health care spending, it's a national life-insurance policy.

Some Things Don't Require A Title...

President Bush To Iranian Madman: "Sorry, Parder, Maybe Next Time..."


I think the President did the right thing by refusing to meet or debate Iran's Ahmadinejad at the UN.

Think about this for a second: one of the primary reasons (at least in my honest opinion) that Iran is "rattlin' the saber" is to somehow gain legitimacy on the world stage and to try to break out of the Third World and into the "Big Time"...

Unfortunately, Iran isn't ready for that distinction.

WASHINGTON - US President George W. Bush declared Friday that he has no intention of meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during his visit to the United Nations headquarters in New York next week.

Bush and Ahmadinejad are expected to carry speeches Tuesday in front of the UN General Assembly, with Bush’s oration scheduled for the morning hours and Ahmadinejad’s for the evening.

Bush addressed the press at the White House’s Rose Garden Friday. When asked whether he would take advantage of the opportunity to meet with the Iranian president, he responded unequivocally, “No. No I will not meet with him.”

The Iranian regime has already thumbed their noses at the UN and the IAEA, why the heck would the United States even bother to give this guy a platform?

My faith in the UN is now completely gone. Ahmadinejad, or any member of that regime, should have been denied an audience with the United Nations until they came into compliance with the demands of the world body.

That's why I think the UN is a sick joke. They tell someone to do something, the rogue nation says "No", and then the UN proceeds to kiss the rogue nation's a55 and give them an audience. We've seen it with pre-war Iraq, we've seen it now with Iran, and we've seen it with North Korea.

Enough. President Bush's impatence with the shennanigans over at the UN building is getting more and more evident:

Ahead of his departure to New York to address the UN General Assembly, Bush expressed dissatisfaction with the organization. He said the Americans were frustrated with the functioning of the UN.

Speaking of the situation in Darfur, Bush said: “The problem is that the United Nations hasn't acted. And so I can understand why those who are concerned about Darfur are frustrated. I am," he said.

"I'd like to see more robust United Nations action." He further hinted that the UN should better use American tax money.

Let's go back to one of the famous Tanker Brother's analogies:

Do you remember when you were in Kindergarden, and you had that one kid who used to eat his boogers, stick pencils in his nose, say "bad words", and run with scissors?

He didn't do it because he liked the taste of boogers (well, maybe he did), pencils in the nose were probably pretty painful, he probably didn't even know what the "bad words" meant, and there probably wasn't some dire emergency that required him to sprint from place to place with scissors.

He did it for attention.

Do you remember what kind of attention he got? He got Mrs. Wallthall (my kindergarden teacher) to get angry and smack his fourth point of contact (rear end - I went to private school where corporal punishment was not only allowed, but encouraged), and then he got sent to the corner.

After that, the booger-eating and bad words came to a quick halt.

The bottom line is this: we give Iran the attention they crave, without the swift kick in the pants to remind them the right way to be a responsible world citizen.

But I have a good feeling that that swift kick is coming soon, from a few of the other "kids in the class..."

Remember what I said about "policing your own"?

Being away from home and living in harsh conditions during the holiday season is especially difficult ~ they need to know we have not forgotten them!!! Yet Another "Why They Hate Us Column"...

...Yet this one is incredibly good.

Accuracy In Media, a Media Watchdog group/publication, actually has a very well-informed column on exactly why terrorism is the modus operandi of extremist Islam.

Here are some excerpts:

The fact is that while the motivations of the individual terrorist may vary considerably and, in the case of the suicide terrorist, may perhaps even be deemed inscrutable, the strategic logic of the terror masterminds without whom there would be transnational terrorist threat is quite simple. They do it because it works.

The writer goes on to discuss many terrorist actions/attacks that occured in the recent past, dating back to 1973. Then, after making some pretty darn good points, he drops the hammer:

In the end, what we need to remind ourselves is that despite the apparent irrationality of terrorist violence, terrorism as a strategic tool is not incomprehensible, even if the motivations of the individual terrorist are difficult to fathom. For example, no suicide bomber—the most "incomprehensible" kind of terrorist—has ever been known to have acted alone. Whatever his or her background and circumstances, he or she was recruited, indoctrinated, and eventually sent out by some person or organization with a political agenda. Even if one is inclined to accept the myth that the suicide terrorist is driven by despair to lash out and is indeed unstoppable, it does not follow that this holds true for those who direct him or her.

These architects of terror have certain strategic aims and they choose their means on the basis of their perceptions of our reaction. The only influence we have over that deadly calculus is to ensure that the killers know that the cost of their operations will redound on their own heads—and on the countries and peoples that shelter them or consort with them—in the form of unsustainable losses and irreparable damages. This, after all, is the strategic logic of warfare in any war: to hasten the end of the conflict by destroying the enemy's will or ability to carry out hostile actions.

And it is the least we owe to the memory of three thousand of our fellow citizens.

Pope Benedict XVI: "Hey, I Just Call 'Em Like I See 'Em"

As I am sure you all heard, Pope Benedict is under verbal fire right now for a comment he made about Islam:

Pope Benedict XVI was last night facing angry demands from Muslims that he apologise for a speech in which he appeared to say the concept of jihad was "unreasonable" and quoted a medieval ruler who said Muhammad's innovations were "evil and inhuman".

Protests swept across the Islamic world and the furore threatened a scheduled visit by the Pope to Turkey.

Did he really do something that was so offensive?

I mean, really... We've all seen jihad up close and personal, jihad is the motivation of Al Qaeda and terrorists like them. Jihad is the Muslim equivalent of a Holy War. So is this fourteen-hundred year old concept unreasonable?

Of course it is.

The Turks didn't take the Pope's comments very well, either:

In Turkey, however, where the Pope is due to visit in November, the deputy leader of the ruling party said Benedict had "a dark mentality that comes from the darkness of the middle ages". Salih Kapusuz added: "He is going down in history in the same category as leaders such as Hitler and Mussolini."

Always a good strategy: when you can't combat logic and reasoning, when you can't take honest criticism, always, and I mean always, pull the Hitler card.

It's getting to be a tactic that, quite frankly, is getting boring. If we continue to slap a Hitler label on everything and everyone that we don't agree with, we end up diluting the horror that Hitler really was, and what he stood for.

Don't like President Bush? Slap the Hitler label on him.

Pope said something you don't like? Slap the Hitler label on him.

The Astros are seven games out of First Place in the National League Central? Yep, you guessed it... Slap the Hitler label on 'em.

My point is this: we actually have members of a religion whose extremist sect behead people and firebombs churches in its fury, saying that the Pope is "going down in history in the same category as leaders such as Hitler and Mussolini."

We actually have members of a religion whose tenets include the subjugation of women, punishments that include forced amputation, and that encouages martyrdom as a combat tactic, saying that the Pope is "going down in history in the same category as leaders such as Hitler and Mussolini."

I swear, sometimes, I think the world is upside down...

Let me leave you with this example of the fury of the "Religion of Peace":

In A Reprise Of His Role In "I Am Sam"...

...Sean Penn is obviously doing his best "mentally-challenged" imitation:

Actor Sean Penn, in a taped Larry King Live interview aired Thursday night on CNN to promote his new movie, All the King's Men, in which he plays a Huey Long-like character, suggested President Bush may bring fascism to America, charged that Bush has “devastated our democracy,” insisted Donald Rumsfeld and Bush have done “enormous damage” to “this country and mankind” and claimed the war on terrorism is meant to distract from reality.

Clearly referring to President Bush, a smirking Penn recalled: “Well, in 1932 Huey Long said something very interesting. It was, 'Fascism will come to America, but likely under another name, perhaps anti-fascism.'” Later, Penn fulminated about how “party clowns like Don Rumsfeld could be described as, as far as I'm concerned, except for the enormous damage he's done this country and mankind -- and our President -- and saw that they're getting out there and they're beating this drum, to drown out, as they did in 2002, to drown out other -- in that case it was Enron. Now we have another situation, so it's this war on terror, boom, boom, boom. Drown out the reality of what's really happening.” Penn also argued: “No Democrat that doesn't have a plan to get our troops out of Iraq should be voted for.”

Sean: You, Sir, are an idiot.

I don't think you know what's really happeneing. None of you Anti-War leftys do.

We, Sir, have been attacked on our soil by Islamic Extremists. Terrorists have attacked US targets around the world (and on our soil) since the 1990's. Only now are we taking the fight to the enemy. We are fighting them in the streets of Baghdad and Kabul, so that idiots like yourself can wage your hate campaigns on this administration from the comfort of Beverly Hills.

American men and women are shedding their blood, selflessly, to keep the extremists away from the United States, away from their families. They are fighting valiantly against evil, and you have the gall to tell us that we've been duped?

I, Sir, have come under fire, and returned fire. I have personally seen the faces of those who would sooner slice your throat because you are not a Muslim, than shake your hand because you're trying to "get the troops out of Iraq".

Do you think they will spare your life because you hate my President?

If you don't believe in this fight... fine. Don't enlist. But don't dissuade the efforts, or cheapen the personal sacrifices made by my fellow Soldiers who are reenlisting in droves to fight in the Wa r on Terror. Don't cheapen the courage and selfless sacrifices of young men and women who are enlisting for the first time to do something, and not wait on the sidelines.

Guys like my good buddy JP, from MilBlogging.com, who enlisted for the specific purpose of fighting in the Global War on Terror, because he believes in it. Guys like my little brother, who enlisted because he wanted to make a difference, he wanted to make history. Shoot, even old Soldiers like me, who stay "in" because we not only believe in this war, but we also enjoy serving our country.

Don't dare to presume you know more, or are more enlightened than I am, Sir. Until you have had your hair parted by a 7.62mm bullet from an AK-47 that a terrorist was aiming at you.

Because that is pretty damn enlightening.

And you can take that 5hit to the moorpool.

Commit To This War!

I can understand the President's frustration with Congress. He's commited to winning this war. I'm commited to winning this war. The Armed Forces of the United States and our Coalition Partners are commited to winning this war...

Why can't Congress hop on board the "Victory Train"?

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush prodded Congress to pass two bills that the administration says are essential to fight the war on terrorism and proposes strategies for interrogating and trying enemy combatants.

Bush answered questions at a late-morning news conference in the Rose Garden.

"We will work with members of both parties to get the bills out of congress," Bush said. "We need the legislation because the Supreme Court has recently ruled that military commissions must be specifically authorized by Congress."

The session with reporters comes one day after Republicans led the Senate Armed Services Committee in rejecting Bush's proposal for interrogating and prosecuting terrorism suspects. The dissident group, led by Sen. John Warner, R-Va., said Bush's approach would jeopardize the safety of U.S. troops.

"It's unacceptable to think there's any kind of comparison between the behavior of the United States of America and the action of Islamic extremists who kill innocent women and children to achieve an objective," said Bush, growing animated as he spoke.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell joined with McCain's group. Powell said Bush's proposal to redefine the Geneva Conventions would encourage the world to "doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism" and "put our own troops at risk."

It was Bush's first news conference since Aug. 21, when he said the Iraq war was "straining the psyche of our country" but that leaving now would be a disaster. Bush has made the struggle against terrorism and the war in Iraq the top issues in the November elections, hoping to persuade voters that Republicans are better than Democrats at protecting the country

Let me tell you a little secret: interrogating Bad Guys saves lives... it doesn't put them in danger.

This is a war that is unlike any war we have ever fought. This enemy has absolutely no conscience when it comes to murdering innocent nem, women, and children. In order to beat him, we must have the tools and the freedom to do this.. our way.

We are trained in what it takes to win, Congress is not. We run the risk of falling into the same trap that my father's generation did: letting Congress fight the war, when they have absolutely no idea in terms of what it takes to win.

President Bush has a vision, and as my Commander-In-Chief, he is in my Chain of Command. It's my responsibility, my charge, to see my mission through to Victory.

But I can't do that with a Congress (that isn't commited to winning), standing between me and the Bad Guys.

In the Army, we call that "masking fires".

What did GEN Patton say?

"Lead me, follow me, or get the hell out of my way!"

Anti-Flag HOA Reverses Position?

Word sure does travel fast!

Remember this post, about the Homeowners Association that was applying pressure on a homeowner to remove his American Flag?

I just got this email from one of our Tanker Sisters all the way up in Canada:

I just called Mr Frank DeCoster... the talk went something like this:

"Hello is that Mr Frank Decoster? "

"Yes."

"Good morning. I am calling from Canada in the hope that you will set straight
a rumour that has made it up here".

"All the way from Canada huh?"

"Yep.....and I hear that some Americans are not allowed to fly your country's
flag. Is that true?"

"No not all all...don't know where you heard this".

"You ARE Mr Frank Decoster of the HOA?"

"Yes I am the president of the HOA."

"Okay good...so you are absolutely telling me that EVERY American is free to fly
their flag wherever they like?""

"Yes."

"Phew I am soooo relieved Mr DeCoster..can I quote you on that?"

"Sure"....

"Thank you so much Mr Decoster. You have a great day now".

Loud laughter from me...off the phone of course.

And no of course I didnt tape this.....didnt need to...

Be Very Careful, Tanker Brothers And Sisters... (Part Two)

If this post wasn't enough for you... it gets even worse: they are targeting our children (and yes, Master Gunner is a Daddy of a very patriotic 17 1/2 month-old: he's gonna be a Tank Master Gunner, too!)

That's right, in some parts of America, your children and grandchildren, your nephews and neices, are not allowed to express their support for the very country they live in, or the very ideals that it represents, not to mention the ideals that we fight for.

Ben Lewandowski says he was only trying to be patriotic when he wore a homemade T-shirt featuring an American flag bumper sticker and the words "Remember 9/11" to Lincoln Park High School on Monday.

After all, it was Sept. 11 -- five years after the terrorist attacks.

The 17-year-old Lincoln Park resident put the shirt on Monday morning and headed to school -- where he was quickly sent to the office and suspended for three days for violating the school's dress code.

He was one of at least seven students sent home for wearing shirts featuring patriotic images and messages. It comes less than a week after three siblings were suspended for wearing shirts emblazoned with the First Amendment, despite warnings, and a week after more than 200 students were sent home on the first day of school for violating the district's dress code -- which bans apparel with writing or pictures.

For Lewandowski, who was sent home on the first day of school for wearing a shirt with writing on it, Monday's incident was his second offense.

"I was frustrated," said the junior, whose desire to become a firefighter was fueled after the Sept. 11 attacks. "It just made me so mad that I can't be patriotic."

Of course, the school district trys to paint it in more of an administrative light, by claiming a technicality with the school's dress code:

Lincoln Park Schools Superintendent Randall Kite said the high school held a moment of silence Monday to give students an outlet to show their patriotism. He said some students had asked last week whether they could wear shirts to commemorate the day, and they were told no.

"We didn't think it would be appropriate, because of the dress code, to wear T-shirts with writing," he said Tuesday.

According to the dress code, students are allowed to wear school-sanctioned clothing, such as T-shirts bearing the school's mascot or clothing that supports school organizations.

But then, out of nowhere... it's the ACLU to the rescue?

This, according to the ACLU of Michigan, may violate the students' rights, particularly because it allows students to wear clothing that encourages school spirit but bans other forms of expression. ACLU officials have said that they plan to look into the constitutionality of the dress code.

Kite said the district had lawyers review the policy before it was enacted. Members of the district's school board have said the dress code is lenient compared with other districts such as Detroit and Pontiac, which have banned jeans and T-shirts completely.

To be honest, I could care less who "looks into it"... no matter how you cut it, it's plain wrong. How are we supposed to teach or children to be good citizens, if they can't show support for the country they live in? How can we teach them the United States Constitution in class, and expect them to retain it, yet not "practice what we preach" in terms of allowing them to express their First Ammendment rights by showing support for a War our nation is fighting?

What kind of example does that set for the leaders of tomorrow?

Now do you see why I have been saying that we are distilling our culture, generation by generation? What kind of teachers and leaders will these children grow up to be someday?

A homeowners' association is refusing to allow a homeowner to have a flag in his yard, despite the fact that a law was passed to protect homeowners in situations like this, and prevent homeowners' associations from stopping people from displaying the American Flag (the Freedom to Display the American Flag Act of 2005).

I am personally offended that I’m being sent off to defend a flag that the citizens I’m protecting can’t even fly. It mocks the very freedom that those stars and stripes represent.


Listen very closely, 'cause I'm gonna just say this one time: NO ONE, save my God and his control of the weather, will take away Master Gunner's right to fly his American Flag in his front yard.

No one.

If the ACLU, CAIR, or anybody else tries, they'd better bring a whole hell of alot of muscle. 'Cause they'd have to kill me. If I'm willing to give my life for God and country overseas, then I'm willing to do the same on my own property.

And you can take that to the motor pool.

President Bush's Speech On The Fifth Anniversary Of 9/11

President Bush gave one of the finest speeches, in terms of substance, since 9/11.

It bothers me that he has such a clear vision for where he wants this country to go, and by extension, the Global War on Terror, but we don't get it delivered from "The Man" as often as we should.

Five years ago, this date - September the 11th - was seared into America's memory. Nineteen men attacked us with a barbarity unequaled in our history. They murdered people of all colors, creeds, and nationalities - and made war upon the entire free world. Since that day, America and her allies have taken the offensive in a war unlike any we have fought before. Today, we are safer, but we are not yet safe. On this solemn night, I have asked for some of your time to discuss the nature of the threat still before us, what we are doing to protect our nation ... and the building of a more hopeful Middle East that holds the key to peace for America and the world.

On 9/11, our nation saw the face of evil. Yet on that awful day, we also witnessed something distinctly American: ordinary citizens rising to the occasion, and responding with extraordinary acts of courage. We saw courage in office workers who were trapped on the high floors of burning skyscrapers - and called home so that their last words to their families would be of comfort and love. We saw courage in passengers aboard Flight 93, who recited the 23rd Psalm - and then charged the cockpit. And we saw courage in the Pentagon staff who made it out of the flames and smoke - and ran back in to answer cries for help. On this day, we remember the innocent who lost their lives - and we pay tribute to those who gave their lives so that others might live.

For many of our citizens, the wounds of that morning are still fresh. I have met firefighters and police officers who choke up at the memory of fallen comrades. I have stood with families gathered on a grassy field in Pennsylvania, who take bittersweet pride in loved ones who refused to be victims - and gave America our first victory in the war on terror. And I have sat beside young mothers with children who are now five-years-old - and still long for the daddies who will never cradle them in their arms. Out of this suffering, we resolve to honor every man and woman lost. And we seek their lasting memorial in a safer and more hopeful world.

Since the horror of 9/11, we have learned a great deal about the enemy. We have learned that they are evil and kill without mercy - but not without purpose. We have learned that they form a global network of extremists who are driven by a perverted vision of Islam - a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance and despises all dissent. And we have learned that their goal is to build a radical Islamic empire where women are prisoners in their homes, men are beaten for missing prayer meetings, and terrorists have a safe haven to plan and launch attacks on America and other civilized nations. The war against this enemy is more than a military conflict. It is the decisive ideological struggle of the 21st century, and the calling of our generation...

One point in particular that grabbed me: "Yet on that awful day, we also witnessed something distinctly American: ordinary citizens rising to the occasion, and responding with extraordinary acts of courage."

I'm worried, though, that many Americans have lost that courage, the courage shown by America on 9/11. I'm concerned that courage, American courage, is being undermined by people who don't have the tenacity to stick to, and win, the Long War. Keep in mind, I've been telling you (since this Blog started, way back in 2004) that this War is a conflict that is much larger than land, or oil, or anything that any war before it was fought. The conflict we find ourselves in is a war of cultures, of ideologies. It's a war of extremism versus Freedom. It's a war of religious toltalitarianism against Democracy.

Make no mistake: if we lose this war, if we are taken over by people whose sole motivation is to convert you to Islam, or otherwise kill you, then the ACLU won't be able to help you. There will be no "separation of church and state", because the church will be the state. Look at Iran, or the former Taliban regime in Afghanistan, if you think I'm exaggerating.

Terrorists, extremists, will not negotiate with you. Good can never, ever negotiate with evil, and come out either ahead or dead even.

Remember simple math? A negative multiplied by a positive, no matter how great that positive is, will always give you a negative.

Always.

I think speeches like this, with themes like these, need to be hammered into the psyche of America, so we don't forget why we're fighting, and what the consequences of losing faith would be.

Mark my words, Tanker Brothers and Sisters: to lose the Global War on Terror, and by extension the War in Iraq, the consequences would be dire, indeed.

Dire.

Monument Of The Living: US Troops In Baghdad Remember 9/11


BAGHDAD — Iraqi and Coalition troops, fighting for freedom and democracy, today remembered the heroes and victims from five years ago.

Nearly 3,000 men, women, and children died at the hands of al-Qaida terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

It was a reminder why many Coalition servicemembers stand on foreign ground today.

U.S. forces involved in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom are ensuring the safety of American soil from terrorist attacks, and securing the freedom of millions of Iraqi and Afghani citizens.

The U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, said during a Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony that people should remember the victims and heroes of that day.

“The victims included citizens of more than 90 different countries, and adherents of many faiths. We mourn the lives lost and offer heartfelt sympathy to the families and friends of those murdered,” Khalilzad said. “We honor the bravery of the fire fighters and policemen, the passengers aboard United Flight 93, and many others who provided examples of courage and determination on that terrible day. We will not forget.”

US Embassy In Damascus Attacked?

Fox news is also reporting a terrorist attack against US embassy in Damascus. One Syrian guard was killed.

Gunfire and explosions have been reported near the American embassy in central Damascus this morning amid reports that the heavily fortified compound has been attacked by armed men.

An embassy guard has told the AFP news agency that the embassy "appeared to be under attack". George Baghdadi, a Syrian journalist in Damascus, said that a member of the Syrian riot police had told him that two men got out of a car and started to fire at the US embassy, possibly also using grenades. Another report speculated that a car had been blown up outside the building.

Reuters reported that at least one Syrian guard had been killed in the attack.

Numerous witnesses report seeing thick clouds of black smoke rising from the diplomatic district of the Syrian capital, where a number of embassies are sited. The incident is thought now to be under control.

Syrian security forces have moved in to surround the Ain Remmeneh district, sealing it off. Ambulances and fire engines were also sent to the scene.

The US embassy in Damascus has been attacked before, after America invaded Iraq. America is unpopular in Syria, a country which President Bush has repeatedly dubbed part of an "axis of evil".


Keep in mind, the US Ambassador was recalled after the assassination of the Lebanese Prime Minister. Thank God there were no American casualties this time.

Today, Tanker Brothers and Sisters, we fast in remembrance of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.

Thousands of Americans lost their lives, and America woke from her comfortable slumber. America woke up to the threat of Islamic Terrorism.

We have never been the same since, and I would submit to you that we will never, ever go back to how we were before September 11th. We will prevail in this War, this global conflict against evil.

"Hounds Of Hell" Capture High Value Bad Guy!


FOB RUSTAMIYAH, Iraq – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers of Companies B and D, 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, attached to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, captured a high-ranking terrorist cell leader along with three of his associates, Friday in east Baghdad’s Al Oubaidy neighborhood.

The actions were part of Operation Together Forward, a Multi-National Division – Baghdad operation designed to reduce assassinations, kidnappings and prevent escalation of sectarian violence in order to restore Baghdad security to Iraqi control.

"We've been looking for the leader of this cell for about four weeks now. We decided to target him about a week and a half ago," said 1st Lt. Randall Weaver, a native of Susanville, Calif., platoon leader, Co. D.

The unit received information there was a terrorist cell operating in Al Oubaidy. Meanwhile, Soldiers from Co. B and Co. D set up a cordon and search around two houses in the Al Oubaidy area. The combined patrol detained four local nationals. One of those local nationals fit the description of their target.

"Not a single shot was fired, and we accomplished our mission," said Lt. Col. Mark Bertolini, a native of Bellerose, N.Y., battalion commander, 3rd Bn., 67th AR.

In a related event, the unit received a tip that militia military took over the gas station across from Forward Operating Base Rustamiyah. Sources indicated the deputy of the terrorist leader captured the day prior was operating at that gas station. Elements from 3rd Bn., 67th AR, were sent to conduct an area reconnaissance in order to gather information for future operations.

Upon arriving at the gas station the Soldiers identified their targets and started moving to detain the local nationals. A vehicle containing the targets attempted to flee the scene, but the Soldiers captured the four suspects. It was later confirmed that the unit had apprehended the deputy of the terrorist leader.

"This is a result of many weeks of hard work by our battalion and brigade staffs and culminated by a precision operation that was executed flawlessly by our Soldiers," said Bertolini.

Neither the suspected terrorists nor MND-B personnel were injured during the operation.

Iraqi Army And Coalition Soldiers: Strengthening Ties With Baghdad Communities


BAGHDAD — During the week leading up to the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York, Washington and Shanksville, Penn., Coalition troops and Iraqi security forces in Baghdad continued their efforts to secure the capital city as part of Operation Together Forward.

As that battle for security and increased quality of life continues, the Iraqi security forces are increasingly taking the lead in protecting their citizens.

In an independent Iraqi Army operation last week, Soldiers from the 6th Iraqi Army Division detained 14 suspected terrorists and confiscated 39 illegal weapons after they searched more than 4,100 homes in Baghdad’s Mansour neighborhood. The Soldiers also seized various small arms, body armor vests and terrorist propaganda.

The six-day mission was successful because of the relationships built with residents of the neighborhood, said Col. Abed Alameer, a commander with the 6th Iraqi Army Division.

"We build strong relationships with the civilians, and in return they help us by providing information they might know about criminals,'' Alameer said.

''The civilian and Army relationship is strengthening because we provide security,” he added. “The terrorists don't want to be in these areas because they know we are here and there will be more areas like these with no terrorists.''

US Army Meets Recruiting Goal: "But Why?"

W've all seen it. We've all read it. I especially love how the mainstream media explains it:

"We're reaching out a lot better," said the official, Maj. Gen. Sean Byrne, director of military personnel management. The Army is making better use of the Internet, for example, to reach more young people, he said.

The Army also has put about one-third more recruiters on the street, and Congress approved new financial incentives for enlistees, including signing bonuses for some slots of as much as $40,000. The Army also began allowing people as old as 42 to enter the service; the maximum age previously was 35.

The Major General is right: we are out there, reaching more people. But I don't think you can attribute meeting the yearly goal to just bonuses, raising the age, and more recruiters. I especially find the age thing hilarious. While I've heard of a few 40-year olds joining the Army, it's not like it added any huge numbers boost to the totals. The "higher bonus" point is just plain stupid. While the modern Army has always given siging bonuses, they are targeted bonuses: the higher sums are for hard-to-fill, highly technical jobs (translators, Information Management, Signal, Intelligence, etc...), and for new cutting-edge jobs (UAV operators, etc..)

The "guys who get dirty": Infantrymen, Tankers, Scouts - they rarely get the big signing bonuses. Yet there is no shortage of guys signing up as Combat Arms Soldiers. If the new "surge" of enlistees was all about greed, wouldn't we have a shortage of new Tankers, Infantrymen, and Scouts?

I think the Army is meeting it's goal, and we have an influx of recuits, for the following reasons:

1. Patriotism is not dead - I believe some young people honestly want to do their part in the War on Terror.
2. This generation of Soldier wants to honor the service of their fathers in Vietnam - but this may be one of the last years we have this boom. Vietnam veterans' children are getting older, past the "sweet spot" for recruitment: 17-25.
3. Young people want to genuinely make a beter life for themselves and their families. As far as benefit packages go for 18-year olds, the Army is hard to beat. And many new Soldiers signing up for duty are already leaning towards serving a full career (20 years).

"Not good enough" is what the mainstream media is telling us. This article, for example, tells us:

But some defense experts argued the Army, which provides the bulk of ground forces in Iraq, had been able to make its goal only by taking lower-quality volunteers who previously might have been rejected.

"The real question is: how low are we willing to let the quality of the Army decline while we continue in this war?" asked Lawrence Korb, assistant secretary of defense in charge of manpower issues under former President Ronald Reagan.


Now to that... I take offense.

No one joins the Army "ready to go to War". On the contrary, Raw recruits go through the life-altering Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training experiences, taking lumps of coal and turning them in to diamonds. Only after learning his/her trade, can a Soldier be truly ready for combat. Drill Sergeants spend countless hours doing a great job of training civilians to become Soldiers, and training those Soldiers to go to war.

About the quality of the Army: while it's true that the Army is promoting Soldiers to higher ranks at younger ages, this is a generational problem that we can point a finger squarely in the direction of the 90's Clinton Administration.

I remember when I was a young Private, and the Army was being "downsized" due to the percieved notion that "since the Cold War is over, we don't need a big Army". (Yet another example of the Clinton Administration ignoring the looming threat of Radical Muslim extremism - think the 1993 WTC bombing) Instead of targeting both young and older Soldiers for "early outs", the Army put its sights squarely on the Senior and mid-level NCOs. The consequence?

The Army lost an entire generation of experience, know how, and Esprit-de-Corps.

The only course of action was to promote younger Soldiers into higher ranks before they were ready for the responsibility, and before they had the experience and know-how to train their subordinates.

The reason for this "drawdown", while officially "since the Cold War is over, we don't need a big Army", I have some other, more radical theories. I'll share one of them (and only one) with you:

Bill Clinton had made a whopper of a promise prior to his election as President: to allow openly gay people into the Military. After the election, he lost his nerve, and instead compromised with the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. The NCOs and Officers in the Army were outraged. Someone recognized that the quickest way to change the time-honored traditions of the Army, was to take away those who passed them down. In other words, remove the guys who had come up through the ranks enforcing the policy, and you could change the policy with less interference, less "pushback".

Without those hardcore Staff Sergeants and Sergeants First Class who had "come up" in the late 70's and the 80's, the Army adopted "Don't ask, don't tell", with less outrage than what was expected.

Yet another example of liberal politicians with no military experience, manipulating the military.

Clinton Administration Officals Apply Pressure On ABC To Change 9/11 Docu-drama

I honestly don't know why the Clintonistas are so bent out of shape. The two-part series is based on the 9/11 Commission Report, and that report is public record. An honorable man would admit he didn't do everything he could, and praise his successor for covering down on what he missed. An honorable man would say "I made a mistake, I should have gotten him when I could". Bringing up Tora Bora, when we were trying to work with the Afghanis to capture Bin Laden, and he slipped away, is 100% more than Clinton did in the War on Terror.

President Bush Vows To Use All Assets In Global War On Terror

Pulling all the stops is the way to go about this fight: Wiretapping, tough interrogations, whatever it takes. If we have an asset, and we're not using that asset to protect the American People, then we are doomed to failure. We have not had a successful Terrorist attack on the United States since September 11th, 2001. And they have tried. And they have failed.

To me, a simple Tanker with a 31 GT score... that's progress, and that's evidence that we're doing the right thing, and we're winning the Global War on Terror. But if the Bad Guys attack in Great Britain, then we need to kill the Bad Guys in Great Britain. If they attack in Pakistan, then that's where they will die. If they attack in Iraq, then Itaq is where they will go to meet their fabled 72 virgins.

Pull all stops, let the war machine roll. And by doing so, protect the American people. "...fight them in Iraq and Afghanistan; so we don't fight them in Dallas, Houston, New York, Washington, D.C., or Los Angeles..."

Iraqis Take Control Of Military

We defined success in the War in Iraq as 1) a stable Democratic Iraqi Government and 2) an Iraqi Army and Police Force who was able to provide security for the citizens of Iraq.

The Iraqi government taking control of the Army/Police goes a long way towards winning the War in Iraq. Winning the War in Iraq is the pre-requisite to bringing US Soldiers home. I don't see where the confusion is... we win, we come home. (read B36's piece on that)

Losing, pulling out before the job is done, "cut and run", etc...

To a Soldier, an M1 Tanker in the United States Army... these are not the options an honorable man has. These are the options allowed to cowards. And we are not cowards.

Anyway, Tanker Brothers and Sisters... enjoy the articles, and like I said: we'll discuss them later. Which reminds me: I want to start more discussions on this page. I don't want to talk TO y'all, I want to talk WITH you. Remember, I'm no Oxford Scholar, I'm just an M1 Tanker that gets dirt under his fingernails, sometimes. Denial Is Dangerous...

From a recent article ("France Rejects War On Terror") from Reuters:

"It is the duty of France and Europe to show that the clash of civilizations is not inevitable," he said. "No one retains this wisdom, inherited from our history, as we, French and Europeans, do," he said.

This is a one of the biggest problems with those against the War on Terror: denial.

It's scary to think that there exists such a great divide between "Enlightened Europe" and the United States.

We have Coalition Partners in Europe, most notably Great Britain, that seem to have a different point of view than the French seem to hold. Yet France feels obligated to "speak for" everyone in Europe.

The "clash of civilizations" is not only inevitable, it's here. It's now. It's happening right under the noses of the French, and missing out on the battle puts the citizens of that country in danger.

France needs to understand that being "enlightened" and fighting a righteous war against an extremist movement aren't mutually exclusive. On the contrary, in my humble opinion, enlightened would mean recognizing the threat and eliminating it out of a concern for the rest of the world, and the desire to remove a threat to peace.

I think it was GEN Patton who said: "Lead me, follow me, or get the hell out of my way."

I think the opportunity (and one that France never quite seized in the 20th Century, much less the 21st) for the French to take a stand and be a leader in the free world has passed.

True, they sit on the United Nations Security Council, and that, in and of itself, gives them a level of authority on par with leaders like the United States and Great Britain (in the arena of the United Nations, which is losing its influence, having failed it's mission of averting War).

Looking back at history, though.. being a victim in WWII wasn't a good enough reason to award them that distinction.

Associated Press and Reuters photographers took these pictures. When Editor & Publisher commented on the sparse turnout, Cindy claimed, "I sold all 100 copies and got writer's cramp signing them. Photos were taken of me before the people got in line to have me sign the book. We made $2000 for the peace house." source

New Reader Makes A Good Comment (And My Response)

Sorry, Haloscan is acting wierd, so I can't respond in the comments thread of this post.

However, I think the comment is so good, I want to put it on the front page:

In 1998, I attended a lecture on Fundamentalism in the Middle East. Back then I didn't understand the lecture completely, but I took one thing out of it. The speaker mentioned that the mixture of totalitarian systems combined with a fantatic religious Followership and a proportionally large increase in population in the Middle East was bound to pose a real danger to weastern cultures in the years to come. Noone mentioned anything about the United States back then, but Fundamentalism was already expected to pose a problem then. Nobody knows for sure how to solve this problem. So the Bush Administration took a "proactive" step after 9/11 - which is one way punch the wasp nest. Nobody knew then, and I think nobody really knows now if this was the right step - I think everybody agrees though, that something needed to be done. The "World Peace" approach already did not work in Nazi Germany, but made Hitler and the SS stronger... Those Germans that were working against the SS during those times were unable to "democratize" Germany from within and it took outside help (lots of outside help and lots of money afterwards) to change Germany. Who thinks Iraq is going to be any different than Germany was?

You have to look at it from my point of view: it was about time someone took the initiative to do SOMETHING.

Imagine if we had been attacked time and time again, and kept turning the other cheek?

Change has to come from within. That's the bottom line. With the help of the Coalition, that's exactly what's happening. Do you realize that the majority of voters in the Iraq elections had never voted in a free election before?

Also, you have to consider: the United States declared independence from England in July 1776. We didn't have a working Constitution until September 1787. It wasn't fully ratified until March 1789. That's almost a full fourteen years.

The Iraqis have gone from Liberation to Constitution in three years, and are now taking steps to secure the country and stand up a military and police force that can keep the internal peace, and protect againt invaders.

Change is possible in each and every country in the Middle East, but it requires the empowerment of the citizens of those countries to choose their own government, not to have Terrorists or religious extremists to do it for them.

What does Al Qaeda really offer the citizens of Iraq? How about the insurgents?

They offer anarchy, murder, crime, corruption, and little else...

The bottom line is that, as the world superpower hyperpower, we have a responsibility to set the example for the rest of the world. We have a responsibility to the people of Iraq to help them attain a working Democracy, if they have chosen that as the type of government they want.

An added advantage is that the citizens of other countries in the region may become inspired to overthrow the tyranny they live under. We're already starting to see signs of restlessness in Iran. Our generation of Iranian really doesn't want anything to do with the Iranian government. They want freedom, they want democracy. All they need, in Iran, is a catalyst.

A Little Story Of Leadership And Responsibility...

We're fighting an ideology, one that preaches hate for the West. We are fighting an ideology that encourages the murder of "infidels".

Let me make myself perfectly clear: not all Muslims are terrorist Islamo-Fascists. Unfortunately, all terrorist Islamo-Fascists are Muslim.

Many Muslims are actually peaceful people who want nothing to do with Radical Islam. All they want is to practice their religion in peace.

Let me tell you a story: When I was a young SGT, we had a Tank Platoon of young NCO's, all of them hard charging and ready to take on the world. We had one weak link, though.

He was an E5 Tank Gunner who had a bad attitude, and couldn't lead his way out of a wet paper bag. His Soldiers followed him, but only out of morbid curiosity.

One day, it surfaced that this E5 Tank Gunner had been taking advantage of privates (lower enlisted Soldiers) from another company, by passing bad checks. His indebtedness and low ethical standards were starting to tarnish the otherwise impressive reputation of our platoon.

The Platoon Daddy (SFC) called all of us, all except the ethically challenged E5 Gunner, into his office. He didn't raise his voice, he didn't turn colors, he didn't blow his top. He said:

"We have a problem child, and he's making us look like crap. This is the best platoon in the Brigade, but no one is talking about how tactically proficient we are, they aren't talking about our top crew gunnery scores, and they aren't talking about our 100% Platoon Gunnery Qualification score. They are talking about our problem child.

You have failed the Platoon, and you've failed that NCO. You have not squared him away, and I hold each and every one of you responsible for not showing this NCO the proper discipline, nor have you inspired him to change his unethical ways.

I am sure you'll remedy that, now that we've had this discussion."

After that meeting, we confronted the guy, and we told him that he "had 24 hours to clean up his act, find some way to compensate the Soldiers he ripped off, and change his attitude, or else we would take it personally. Very personally."

Needless to say, he did the right thing and squared himself away (but it took some persuading - I'll leave the interpretation up to you).

And we (the other, Non-ethically challenged NCOs) learned a valuable lesson, and one that I will never, ever forget: you have to police up your own.

That's a lesson that peaceful Muslims haven't learned. Instead of taking their marching orders from CAIR or the ACLU, they need to stop whining and police up their own.

In his speech to the Military Officers Association of America the President quoted bin Ladin as declaring, among other things, that Iraq is “the capital of the caliphate.”

Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, no doubt thinking himself brilliant for having done, responded by asserting that if President Bush had killed bin Laden in late 2001, “he wouldn’t have to quote this barbarian’s words today.”

Senator Kerry thinks he’s brilliant, no doubt. Yes, it’s true that if bin Ladin had been killed in 2001 then, of course, the President wouldn’t be quoting him today. But the ability to state a tautology is not the mark of a genius, unless Forrest Gump is someone you consider a genius. For although it is true that the President wouldn’t be quoting bin Ladin, it is also true that he’d just be quoting someone else who was interested in establishing The Third Caliphate.

Can Senator Kerry really believe that every Islamofascist terrorist in the world is going to give up the Dream of The Caliphate just because Osama bin Ladin gets his head filled with air? If he does, then he’s wrong...

James has an excellent point, and one that escapes the majority of America: Osama Bin Laden isn't the only enemy that we are facing.

True, he's the symbol of International Terrorism, but the bottom line is this: killing Bin Laden will not end the War on Terror. Only change in the Middle East will end the War on Terror.

And guess what we're bringing about in Iraq?

I'm coming off of my third fast day since the 31st of August!

Master Gunner: Oxford Scholar?

Y'know... this makes the proud owner of a 31 GT score pretty frickin' proud!

If it wasn't for morbid curiosity, I wouldn't have even bothered to check out Jane Stillwater's blog way back when. Now, I check it at least one a week, for no other reason than to shoot Mountain Dew out of my nose in laughter.

Anyway, back to the title of the post. It seems like the Tanker Brothers are part of some PsyOps conspiracy:

"There's a blog run by U.S. soldiers in Iraq that has adopted me as their current object of scorn," I told this journalist, who had just gotten back from Iraq. "Here's my question -- this blog is one of the most up-scale efforts I've ever seen. Graphics to die for. Fabulous writing. Oxford dictionary-style grammar and spelling. Comment forms that actually work. How can they pull all that together if they are stuck out there in Iraq?"

"They can't. Soldiers stationed in Iraq ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE BLOGS. In many cases, they aren't even allowed to get e-mail. It sounds like this blog is a psy-ops operation." Journalists know everything!

1: For the ten-thousandth time: WE ARE NOT IN IRAQ! We are getting ready to go BACK to Iraq, but that's not the same as being currently IN Iraq, is it, Jane?

2: Jane: you're not an object of our scorn. More like "Amusement". "Frustration". "Comic Relief". But not scorn. Scorn, we reserve for real journalists.

3: Our blog is one of the most upscale you've ever seen? You don't visit many blogs, do you? We're pretty low-tech there in Tanker Brother Land, Lady.

4: "Fabulous writing?" "Oxford Dictionary-style spelling and grammar"? Heh. Who says the Texas school system is ineffective?

5: And finally, let me set the record straight. If her buddy the journalist ever got out and actually talked to Soldiers, instead of locking himself in his hotel room in Iraq, he would know that Soldiers are allowed to have blogs, as long as they register them with the Chain of Command (OPSEC reasons). And every Soldier in the Army has, in addition to civilian email addresses, a US-Army issued email address! It's in AR 25-2! You must have one!

6: PsyOps operation? Now that is just cool. Yeah, Jane, we're PsyOps. You got us, red-handed. That's why we have our pictures in the banner. That's why we have photos of us in Iraq throughout the blog.

I can see why you would think that, though. I mean... what better "feel good", positive Iraq story would there be? Two brothers, All-American upbringing, both Tankers, serving side-by-side in a Combat Zone, and back home in Garrison? With our stunning good looks (LOL!) and Oxford-dictionary spelling and grammar? Shoot... Cav Tanker was a frickin' Eagle Scout! How much more All-American can you get?

Hey, Jane: the Anti-War Liberal media needs Photoshop manipulation and "doom 'n gloom" to get readers.

I'm not usually a "complainer", but you know it's bad when you cellphone has a faster internet connection than your computer does!

The hotel I am staying at advertises "Broadband Internet", but what they don't tell you is that the whole hotel is sharing the same bandwidth. Sometimes, I'm slower than Dial-Up; sometimes, I'm just a tad faster.

Either way, please accept my sincerest apologies. The next few posts will be light on the photos, until I figure out how to get a better solution for posting.

I might go with emailing in posts, that's relatively quick.

A Sad State Of Affairs...

I was thinking about something yesterday on my cross-country drive: what happened to our Heroes?

I'm not talking about the guys who are "in the dirt" daily in Iraq: to me, they are all heroes, each and every one of them.

What I am talking about, are the legends.

Quick Quiz: Choose the name you are most familiar with:

1. SPC Lynndie England
2. SFC Paul Ray Smith

Everyone recognizes SPC England due to her exposure by an Anti-War media that wants nothing more than to bring discredit to the War in Iraq. While the abuses at Abu Ghraib were tragic, and should have been punished (and they were), they don't tell the real story of the War in Iraq.

For that, you need to become familiar with the second name, that of SFC Paul Ray Smith, who won the Congressional Medal Of Honor for his valorous deeds at Baghdad International Airport on the 4th of April, 2003:

Sergeant First Class Paul R. Smith distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy near Baghdad International Airport, Baghdad, Iraq on 4 April 2003. On that day, Sergeant First Class Smith was engaged in the construction of a prisoner of war holding area when his Task Force was violently attacked by a company-sized enemy force. Realizing the vulnerability of over 100 soldiers, Sergeant First Class Smith quickly organized a hasty defense consisting of two platoons of soldiers, one Bradley Fighting Vehicle and three armored personnel carriers. As the fight developed, Sergeant First Class Smith braved hostile enemy fire to personally engage the enemy with hand grenades and anti-tank weapons, and organized the evacuation of three wounded soldiers from an armored personnel carrier struck by a rocket propelled grenade and a 60 mm mortar round. Fearing the enemy would overrun their defenses, Sergeant First Class Smith moved under withering enemy fire to man a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on a damaged armored personnel carrier. In total disregard for his own life, he maintained his exposed position in order to engage the attacking enemy force. During this action, he was mortally wounded. His courageous actions helped defeat the enemy attack, and resulted in as many as 50 enemy soldiers killed, while allowing the safe withdrawal of numerous wounded soldiers. Sergeant First Class Smith’s extraordinary heroism and uncommon valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Third Infantry Division "Rock of the Marne," and the United States Army.

But of course, that doesn't increase circulation numbers for the New York Times.

See, Tanker Brothers and Sisters, it's not one hundred percent the fault of those uncommited to the War: you only digest what you're fed.

They have been hearing "Doom and Gloom" for three-and-a-half years, they have been saturated with nothing but bad news about Iraq from the mainstream media. They don't hear about the extraordinary acts of valor by our Soldiers, by their sons and daughters.

Casey Sheehan, for example, volunteered to go out as part of a Quick Reactionary Force to help save his fellow Soldiers who were pinned down. He didn't have to go. But he did.

When you think of Casey Sheehan, though, you don't think of his valor, you think of his mother.

But why is that?

Ask yourself why you're getting some news from Iraq, but not all the news from Iraq. And then you should demand to hear the whole truth.

Better yet: your Sons and Daughters have stories to tell, and they should write them down. Post them (remembering OPSEC, of course), get the word out. The internet should be saturated with the stories of the men and women who are making history, each and every single day.

America doesn't need the story as seen by one slanted reporter who writes columns from the safety of his hotel in Baghdad's International Zone based off of information he pays for, because he lacks the courage to go "outside the wire". America needs the stories of the men and women that go "outside the wire" on a daily basis and see and experience, and facilitate, the progress that is being made in Baghdad, Ramadi, Fallujah, Mosul, Tikrit, Balad, and every other place in Iraq.

Ask to hear about the medals awarded, the schools being built, the infastructure being repaired and built, the jobs being created, the military and police forces taking over security, the Iraqi government trying to stand on its own, and a host of other positive events that the mainstream media doesn't think are "newsworthy".

They are your sons and daughters that are helping to make these things happen, and you deserve to hear about them.

Bad News is a drug, and the Mainstream media are the street corner dealers. America is addicted, and I think it's high time for an intervention.

What If Patton Were Alive Today?

Considering that I am a Tanker, General George S. Patton, Jr is one of my personal heroes.

While Patton might have been abrasive and controversial, he was also a brilliant commander and committed to victory.

As I was driving up here yesterday, I was listening to OpenFire.us, and Jay and Jeff played back George C. Scott's moving rendition of one of General Patton's most moving speeches. I have taken the text of that speech, and adapted it to the War on Terror (my changes are in bold):

Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

Men, all this stuff you've heard about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of horse dung. Americans, traditionally, love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle.

When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball players, the toughest boxers. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. Now, I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans.

Now, an army is a team. It lives, eats, sleeps, fights as a team. We are an Army of One. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap. The bilious bastards who wrote that stuff about individuality for the New York Times don't know anything more about real battle than they do about fornicating.

Now, we have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit, and the best men in the world. You know, by God, I actually pity those poor bastards we're going up against. By God, I do. We're not just going to shoot the bastards. We're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy terrorist bastards by the bushel.

Now, some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you'll chicken-out under fire. Don't worry about it. I can assure you that you will all do your duty. The terrorists are the enemy. Wade into them. Spill their blood. Shoot them in the belly. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do.

Now there's another thing I want you to remember. I don't want to get any messages saying that we are holding our position. We're not holding anything. Let the terrorist do that. We are advancing constantly and we're not interested in holding onto anything -- except the enemy. We're going to hold onto him by the nose, and we're gonna kick him in the ass. We're gonna kick the hell out of him all the time, and we're gonna go through him like crap through a goose!

Now, there's one thing that you men will be able to say when you get back home, and you may thank God for it. Thirty years from now when you're sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee, and he asks you, "What did you do in the great Global War On Terror?" -- you won't have to say, "Well, I shoveled shit in Louisiana."

Alright now you sons-of-bitches, you know how I feel.

Oh, I will be proud to lead you wonderful guys into battle anytime, anywhere.

That's all.

Wow... only six changes. And three of those were removing the word "Nazi", and replacing it with "terrorist". Another, was changing the name of the conflict we're in. At first, I was kind of confused. More than sixty years later, and only six edits?

Yes, Tanker Brothers and Sisters: only six edits. The enemies we fight, whether they are Nazis in the 1940's or Islamo-Fascists in 2006, they are still our enemy. The Soldier's duty is the same, no matter what era he lives in. Great generals have been giving the same speech for thousands of years, I would imagine. The only thing that should change is the name of the enemy. And Patton's guidance still holds true.

When I listened to that speech yesterday (as delivered by the legendary George C. Scott), I literally misted up.

Imagine, if you will, that General Patton were alive today. Imagine if he would have stood in front of thousands of Soldiers, and gave the speech printed above.

The New York Times, the Anti-War Left, and the "Cut-And-Run" crowd in Washington would have crucified him.

And that's a good indicator of the times we live in: we, as a society, are soft. We're lazy, we lack commitment or tenacity. Americans, or a good number of them (not y'all), have been brainwashed into losing the fighting spirit. It used to be, when we got into a war, we would hunker down and prepare for a long, bloody fight. Now, America wants its wars wrapped up in hours, not years. The America that sacrificed hundreds of thousands of its sons to halt the spread of Fascism in Europe, does not have the stomach to honor the sacrifices made by less than three thousand to stop the spread of Islamo-Fascism throughout the world.

General Patton was a great Soldier, he dedicated his life to warfare and leadership under duress.

I honestly think that right now, looking down at the state of affairs in the United States and its lack of commitment to this war, General Patton is in tears.

Today, we have the honor of having a real patriot participating in the Rolling Victory Fast!

I’ve been a patriot since I could tie my shoes, but I guess it was made official early in Feb 1969 when I recited this at a Navy induction centre in Philadelphia:

I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

I’m not sure if everyone took that oath seriously, but I did. After all, I’ve only taken two oaths in my entire life…the other being to “love, honor, and obey”. I like to think that I’ve been true to both of them. Although the subject of the second oath nearly knee-capped me when I was looking to take a job in the sandbox….pointing out that she was too old to start waiting for me like that again. I’ve repeated the first oath at induction or graduation ceremonies for my sons.

At my age, I have been able to do little to honor the memory of those who died on 911, and those who stand in harms way for me. Oh yes, I have contributed money and goods to patriotic and veteran organizations, I have voted (mostly) for conservatives when they are worthy of the name, I have stood and cheered at parades, I have supported individuals who are doing what I can no longer do, and I’ve stayed strong in the face of low-rent criticism. But I also go to a safe job each day (except for the commute up the Parkway) and come home to dinner and a safe bed (mostly) each night…thanks to those who have none of them. It doesn’t seem like enough.

I Support the Troops sounds too much like easy lip service for someone like me – I used to be a troop (well, squid anyway), and would put myself in harms way if I could. My wife would be seriously pissed, my children would think I’d gone nuts, and my moonbat neighbors would just shrug and say “well, he is a right-wing death beast after all.” But I’d do more if I could.

And I’m damn sure that I’m not alone.


Hooah, Sir.

Hooah, indeed.

Pray For A Soldier

From one of our Tanker Sisters, Mary*Ann:

Reid is one of my adopted Soldiers. I kind of adopted the whole family. His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer last November while he was in Afghanistan. This May they thought they had beaten the odds. Not so. It is in her brain and the prognosis is not good at all. He called me from Germany and pretty much gave me the go ahead to let people know. Any prayers the Tanker Brothers and Sisters could send their way would be appreciated. I know you are pressed for time and I am not as good as you are with words...these are great people...Reid gave up a very good job to join the Army because when his kids asked "what did you do in the War Daddy" he wanted to be able to tell them. Ellicia supported him all the way. I want to dedicate my next fast day, October 2 to them.

Mary*Ann sent us a link to SC Eagle's Blog, where he sheds a little bit more light on the matter:

What now... That's the question we've been facing for the last several days. We've come to the acceptance that within a year, I'll likely be a single father. By acceptance, I don't mean to imply happiness or anything like that. More like many, many tears.

We have cried a lot. All of our hopes, dreams, and plans... well, those seem out the window now.

Everything we do now is seen through the prism of the cancer. Wondering what we can do to preserve her for the children. Crying over how young the children are and if they'll remember her.

It's been a long weekend. We're getting ready for her surgery.

My unit has been extremely supportive. My 1SG is amazing, and as my Commander spelled out to me, my place of duty is my family. The rest of the chain of command, likewise.

And now, we just try to go day by day.

One of our US-based SoldiersAngels is taking over the Rolling Victory Fast today! AngelInMi emailed us with the reason she's taking it upon herself to give a show of support through the RVF:

As an angel with Soldiers' Angels I am dedicated in taking part in the Rolling Victory Fast. Lots of thoughts went through my mind in preparing my comments and it puts my life into perspective. The end of summer is a melancholy time in my home state of Michigan. Summer, like life, is but a fleeting moment. How we choose to define that moment is very important.

Here even in the quiet west Michigan community of Egelston Twp. we have learned that freedom isn't free. I became involved with Soldiers' Angels because I wanted to support the troops on a more personal level.

One letter and one care package at a time.

Before 9/11 I was often complacent to live my life and raise my daughter in my comfort zone. But that day changed all of that. Respect for the military runs in my family because my dad served in the Army and my uncle is a WWII vet. I support the troops and stand up for what I believe in.

My fast is dedicated to an American soldier who lost his life on Christmas Day 2005 in Baghdad, Iraq. My responsibility as an American is to honor and protect his name. Part of that is to be constantly vigilant in spreading the word of how our military is dedicated in winning the war on terrorism. Life in a world with the constant threat of terrorism looming over us is not how we should live. America's finest, our soldiers, deserve our respect because they are fighting so that we can enjoy our American way of life.

Isn't This What We Defined As Progress?

BAGHDAD — In a meeting with reporters Wednesday, the commander of Multi-National Force – Iraq said he believes Iraqi security forces are progressing enough that Coalition forces will have a diminished role in Iraq within 18 months.

The Coalition sees improvements in the Iraqi security forces everyday, said Gen. George W. Casey, Jr.

“I don’t have a definite date, but I can see, 12 to 18 months, the Iraqi security forces progressing to where they can take on security responsibilities with very little Coalition support,” Casey said.

The general also said within that time frame it will be Iraqis who will make the choice.

“In 12 to 18 months Coalition presence will be decided by the Iraqi government,” he said.

LGF: Beslan, Two Years On

We posted earlier about the anniversary of the Beslan terrorist attacks in Russia. Little Green Footballs has some additional photos from the tragedy:

It’s the anniversary of the Islamic atrocity in Beslan, in which 333 people (more than 150 of them children) were slaughtered. To remember it here are some still photos from Russian television that we published at the time.



The first photo in particular will haunt me for a long time. That young boy, looking at the camera, with his eyes pleading for help, while under the guard of a terrorist's AK-47.

See all the children?

Most of them died.

That may help put things into perspective: these terrorist thugs are murderers, and they don't care about who they kill, as long as killing helps them get their message out.

Remember The Other Victims Of Terrorism!

As September 11th nears, the fifth anniversary of the WTC and Pentagon Attacks, we have to remember that this is a Global War on Terror.

Deviant Scholar, better known to Tanker Brothers and Sisters as "The Blogger Formerly Known As Philologous", points that fact out to us:

As 11 September approaches, let's recall another day in September:

333 people died in Russia's worst terrorist attack.

The War on Terror is about them also.

...and he's absolutely right: the War we fight is one of cultures and ideology. Terrorists do not respect national borders or civilians. All they care about is getting attention to their cause through killing.

Soldiers, civilians, women, infants, schoolchildren, even fellow Muslims: to the Islamo-Fascists, it makes no difference. All that matters to them, is the spread of Terror and oppression.

And that's what we are fighting. That's why victory is so crucial.

Bandit.Three.Six: Commentary On The President's Press Conference

President Bush made a great point in his recent press conference on the War in Iraq. Bandit.Three.Six covered it, and offered some awesome commentary:

"The United States of America will not leave until victory is achieved."
These words were spoken today by President Bush. Let's follow this statement to its logical end:
  1. We're winning the war in Iraq.
  2. As long as we don't quit, we'll win.
  3. When we win, we go home.
Winning AND going home, sounds good to me!

The President also said that he will be giving more speeches over the next few days with the goal of showing the American people just how we are winning in Iraq. This is a mighty step forward in the battle for the hearts and minds of the American people, or what I like to call, the Second Front.

The battle in Iraq is being won. As long as we continue to move forward with our progress, it will end in victory. The biggest obstacle to winning now is the commitment of the American people, the Second Front.

The bad guys know this and they are doing their best to break the will of the American people. If the bad guys manage to convince enough Americans that victory isn't worth the sacrifice and those Americans convince the policy makers to tuck tail and run, then we will have lost.

Let's pause for a moment and think; what is the bad guy's best weapon on the Second Front? What are they using to convince Americans that it's not worth it? Do I even need to say it?

As long as you let us stay in Iraq, we will win. When we win, we will come home.

One thing that I don't understand: President Bush is exemplary at communicating his vision for the Global War on Terror, in the mold of one of my heroes, President Reagan. I don't understand why he doesn't do more press conferences. With vision like this, you need to get the word out.

I respect Tony Snow, but I'd rather hear it straight from the Boss.

B36 is quickly becoming one of my "a few times a day" reads. I'm proud to count him as a wingman.

I'll close with a quote from President Bush to the American Legion:

"The war we fight today is more than a military conflict, it is the decisive ideological struggle of the 21st Century."

Sheesh...how long have the Tanker Brothers been telling you this?
