Just A Quick Note......

I read this morning and to be honest, my first thought was 'Thankyou'. I was actually just having a conversation yesterday with a co-worker whose son in law is in the Military about how hard it is to have a partner or loved one in the Forces. Then I read this....

Thursday, 21 February 2008 012/2008

The importance, strength, self-reliance and courage of the families of
Australian Defence Force members has now been officially recognised at
the Australian War Memorial, with the unveiling of a plaque and a
garden seat.

Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP,
joined Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie, Vice Chief of the Defence
Force, the Director of the Australian War Memorial, Mr Steve Gower, and
members of Defence Families of Australia in a ceremony at the War
Memorial today.

“In war and in peace, the men and women of our Australian Defence
Force have been supported by their families. The work they do would not
be possible without the love and understanding that families give.

“Today provides a long overdue opportunity to recognise the
families’ contribution,” Mr Snowdon said.

“There are many challenges that go with being in the Australian
Defence force family
.

“Our families face frequent relocations, they have to deal with a
family member being away from home on training or deployment for weeks or
even months at a time – all these factors add up to an increased
level of pressure.

“We are committed to easing these pressures as much as we can, but
the first step is to recognise the contributions of our families,” said
Mr Snowdon.

The plaque accompanies a bench seat in the War Memorial’s Sculpture
Garden.

“By establishing this seat here in the sculpture garden we seek to
remind the visitors to this place that every person who serves in the
Australian Defence Force carries with them the love, the hopes and the
fears of a family,” Mr Snowdon said.

“We thank these families for their service to our country.”

So often people tell me they don't know how I do it, how I put up with J being away all the time and at about 10 seconds notice (or at least that's how it feels sometimes). There are thousands of families throughout Australia and indeed, millions throughout the world who do understand the gut wrenching fear and loneliness that comes with having a loved one in the Armed Forces. We are strong because we are proud, but pride can never replace fear or loneliness, it can only ease it. I know I can speak for many when I say your thoughts and prayers are appreciated as is the acknowledgement of the difficulties we face from the ADF.

Paratroopers in Afghanistan Need Your Support

Via Blackfive:

A recent article by Elizabeth Rubin in the New York Times painted one Platoon of this Brigade in a less than favorable light. The article sensationalized the facts in a negative way, which served only to cause undue stress on the Soldiers and family members. The author failed to mention successes within the Brigade such as substantial humanitarian aid (tons of food and clothes) delivered to local villages, medical care for local children and adults, road projects, clean water projects, training of Afghan National Army personnel, distribution of school supplies, etc. . . .Historically, spring is a time of heavy fighting in this region as the terrorists and insurgents emerge from their caves after the harsh winter temperatures and snows. Let's show these Soldiers how much support they have from home to help them through the spring and the remainder of this long and dangerous deployment.

Our paratroopers are in the fight of their lives and they need to hear that America loves them.

Please head over to Blackfive and read the rest of his post~all that these men are up against in the region they are serving in.

Also note where you can send your letters of support to these soldiers:

Please send an email of support to skysoldiers173rd@gmail.com

Or you can mail cards to:

    Leta Carruth
    P O Box 100
    Cordova, TN 38088

Yep. That's our very own Leta!!

Please take the time to send an email or write a letter of support~these men need to know that we are behind them 100%.

Afghan Army Base In Chora

More good news to come out of Afghanistan...

24 January 2008
Afghan Army base in Chora

Despite freezing temperatures, Australian soldiers have driven a wedge into Taliban territory by helping locals construct an Afghan Army base in Chora.

While the Dutch forces and Australian Reconstruction Task Force provide the security, and are involved in trade work and supervision, it’s the local Afghans who are contracted to do the actual building. In this environment the engineers focus on quality control & mentoring as well as bridging capability gaps such as the provision of heavy earth works.

The Reconstruction Task Force - 3 (RTF) consists of a combined arms team, located in Oruzgan Province in Southern Afghanistan as part of Operation Slipper. The RTF is in partnership with the Netherlands Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) and forms part of the NATO- led International Security Assistance Force. The RTF has a clearly defined role to work on reconstruction, improvement of provincial infrastructure and community based projects. The RTF also provides trade training to the local population and military engineering training to the Afghan National Army. This type of assistance is designed to benefit the people of Oruzgan Province well into the future and form building blocks of a stable and prosperous community. The RTF contains around 370 ADF personnel from predominately Queensland based units. It includes elements to provide command, security, engineering, and administrative support and is equipped with Bushmaster Infantry Mobility Vehicles (IMV), Australian Light Armoured Vehicles (ASLAVs) and armoured engineer plant equipment. Australia's contribution to ISAF is an important component of the Australian Government's commitment to assist Afghanistan achieve a stable and secure future.

Good News Friday(B*N*S*N1)

Remember the last story I told you about the Canadian troops training on US soil, working with the Americans? Comes another story of coalition partners working together:
FORT BLISS, Texas, Feb. 27, 2008 – More than 3,000 Canadian soldiers preparing for a rotation in Afghanistan are wrapping up a pre-deployment training exercise here this week that included U.S.-led instruction in countering improvised explosive devices.

The three-week 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group exercise, dubbed Exercise Southern Bear, concludes Feb. 28.

Soldiers from Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, in Ontario, arrived here Feb. 7 to train for their deployment to Kandahar in September, Lt. Andrew Hennessy, the 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group spokesman, told American Forces Press Service. Once deployed, the soldiers will serve with the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team and as observer mentor liaison teams that embed with and train Afghan soldiers and national police.

About 80 percent of the troops will be deploying to Afghanistan for the first time, but they’re no strangers to tough missions far from home in Bosnia, Haiti, Eritrea and other hot spots, Hennessey said. “They’ve had lots of experience in lots of places,” he said.

Exercise Southern Bear, spread over a massive area that includes not just Fort Bliss, but also the McGregor Range and White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, is giving the Canadians the opportunity to train for operations with both friendly and hostile civilians, enemy insurgents, media and Afghan national security forces. ...

Good News Friday(B*N*SN*2)

This Good News Story comes under 'getting it done". This one is an example of our troops doing their jobs, every day of the year. It also happens to be about one of my favourite K9's (after Bratdog, of course!) From Chuck:

"Today Gabe and I had the honor to do a Vice Presidential mission for VP Dick Chenney. It was an awesome experience to see Air Force 2 and to see the Vice President. Of course Gabe and I were behind the scenes, but Gabe had a huge responsibiity. At the end, we got to take pictures with the Vice Presidents Limo's and the other vehicles and I will have the picture soon. As you can see with this picture, Gabe was posing with a Texas State Trooper that was part of the motorcade and didn't even get arrested or a ticket because I warned him to be on his best behavior because Texas Troopers do not play ha ha...."

And this is the official version - also worth reading:

Vice President Richard B. Cheney speaks to about 9,000 1st Cavalry Division soldiers during a welcome home ceremony on Fort Hood, Texas, Feb. 26, 2008. U.S. Army photo by Spc. Alexis Harrison

FORT HOOD, Texas, Feb. 26, 2008 – With secret servicemen scattered in a sea of soldiers and cameras, the 1st Cavalry Division parade field looked like a scene from the next box-office suspense thriller Feb. 26. But it wasn’t a “Hollywood” set.

The scene was set for Vice President Richard B. Cheney to welcome home the Fort Hood troopers from a 15-month tour in Iraq.

A roaring crowd of about 9,000 soldiers greeted the vice president, in what the division’s commanding general Brig. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks referred to as a welcome so loud that not only would Cheney feel welcomed, but the soldiers’ brothers and sisters in Iraq and Afghanistan would be able to hear them as well.

Cheney, who visited prior to the First Team’s deployment in October 2006, started his speech by saying it was an honor to be back at Fort Hood and extending President George W. Bush’s respect and good wishes to his recently redeployed troops....

This is a Good News Story on so many levels. Go read the rest of it here, and find out why. That, folks, is B*N*S*N!

Over the time I have been caretaker here at Tanker Bros, I have brought you many inspiring "firsts". You know, stories you will never see in the msm. ;) Here's another:

MSgt. Woodrow Wilson Keeble will be awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously on March 3. Photo by Vets Incorporated, Wahpeton, ND.

First Sioux to Receive Medal of Honor

Feb 22, 2008
BY Carrie McLeroy

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Feb. 22, 2008) -- During the final allied offensive of the Korean War, Master Sergeant Woodrow Wilson Keeble risked his life to save his fellow Soldiers. Almost six decades after his gallant actions and 26 years after his death, Keeble will be the first full-blooded Sioux Indian to receive the Medal of Honor.

The White House announced Friday morning that Keeble will receive the Medal of Honor posthumously in a ceremony scheduled for 2:30 p.m. March 3.

Keeble is one of the most decorated Soldiers in North Dakota history. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he was born in 1917 in Waubay, S.D., on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Reservation, which extended into North Dakota. He spent most of his life in the Wahpeton, N.D. area, where he attended an Indian school. In 1942 Keeble joined the North Dakota National Guard, and in October that year, found himself embroiled in some of the fiercest hand-to-hand combat of World War II on Guadalcanal...

An amazing hero, being recognised - finally! Go read the rest of this great story here.

Feb 21-24 2008 was Clipsal long weekend here in Adelaide. It was an amazing weekend of car racing, live music and friendly rivalry both on and off the track. Saturday was marred only by the tragic accident which later claimed the life of Racing Car Driver Ashley Cooper. I attended on saturday with a couple of friends. Prior to the race we wandered around the pavillions looking at the merchandise for sale and taking in the atmosphere. Part of the displays over the weekend was the Defence Display. I, of course, knew about the display as J had been there all weekend working (and I was wandering around with his Defence Pass on so I could access more areas than my General Admission ticket would allow). When I went over for a look at the Defence displays I was overwhelmed by the response from the public.

There was a Navy Diver in a tank showing how they can stay under water for long periods of time. He was playing noughts and crosses on the side of the glass with some kids and there was a huge line waiting for a go. While they stood around another Navy Officer explained about what they did.

Then there was this...

I don't know how well you can see but on the side is the word 'ARMYGEDDON' with a Digger firing a weapon. It was an awesome car and alot of people were standing around checking it out. While they did this Soldiers mingles in amongst the crowd chatting casually to people about their jobs.

Then of course was the poor guy who got stuck with the job of dressing in full camouflage (who resembled a seaweed monster). I watched laughing, as people bumped into him and said "Gee sorry, didn't see you there". After the 50th time I'm sure the joke had well and truly worn thin, yet he just stood there and took it.

What really got to me though was the interest people were taking. People stood around talking to the Soldiers with interest as their children played on the Army Vehicles (ASLAVS). Children proudly displayed ANZAC fake tattoo's on their arms. Everybody was showing these Soldiers respect, quick to shake their hands and have a chat. I found this incredible and it gave me so much hope for our future.

Our ADF are at all major events like this throughout Australia promoting the benefits of joining the Army, Airforce and Navy. They do an amazing job and are wonderful with the children.

Navy Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Michael E. Koch

Navy Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Michael E. Koch
29 years old from State College, Pennsylvania
East Coast-based SEAL team
February 4, 2008

“There are only approximately 2,500 SEALs in the Navy and they really are a brotherhood,” said Naval Special Warfare spokesman Lt. David Luckett. “This is another unfortunate reminder of the risks and sacrifices these amazing warriors and their families make on a daily basis.”

Koch leaves behind his parents and a fiancee. He enlisted in July 1998 and entered SEAL training in January 1999, according to The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk. He received the Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal and three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

Navy SEAL Michael E. Koch died Feb. 4 after being wounded by small-arms fire during combat operations in Iraq alongside fellow SEAL Nathan Hardy, who was profiled last week.

Jeremy's House

From Mr Koolness himself...This is the story that he wrote for Thunder Roads Magazine...THIS is the house that love built. Be sure and watch the video at the end. This whole project is a testament to what can happen when love gets to work. My thanks to the PGR..I just LOVE you guys, you know I do....(Brat):

Cpl Jeremy Cabaniss was in Fort Campbell, Kentucky being treated for TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) He was in several IED explosions, two of which gave him a severe concussion. The roof of his home in Panama City Beach had been damaged while he was in Iraq searching the streets and back alleys for terrorists and bomb making materials. The home was damaged during the worst hurricane season that the panhandle had ever seen. His wife Deanna was supporting two households and two young boys on a Corporals pay. Mortgage and insurance payments on the home in Panama City Beach were more than her checkbook could handle so when the damage to the house occurred there was no insurance coverage. Her priority at the time was to keep the roof over her head and her children fed in Kentucky.

Soldiers Angels Inc. asked the Patriot Guard Riders to help them fix the roof on Jeremy’s house. We asked for a couple of new estimates from roofers that we knew and managed to get a local developer to donate a dehumidifier to help dry out the house in an attempt to contain the mold that was feeding off of the water leaking through the roof.

Deanna arranged for someone to meet us at the house to inspect the storm damage. It was a warm muggy afternoon when Bill unlocked the front door and led us inside. We had already looked over the outside of the home while we were waiting for Bill and had seen blue tarps tacked to the roof in two or three places. The house was old and the roof had an odd look to it, we thought at first that it was the blue tarps tacked to it.

When we entered the old home we expected some stained sheetrock and maybe a moldy or musty smell. The mold smell inside this home would knock a buzzard off two day old road kill. There were water stains in every room and the entire home was covered in black dust. The headache set in almost immediately.

Bill led the way towards the bedroom located just behind the garage. The door to the room was closed and swollen with moisture and had to be shouldered open causing the inside of the room to shudder and pieces of ceiling to rain down. The ceiling in the middle of the room had sagged a couple of feet. Water logged and blistered sheetrock was drooping in several places. Soggy grey dust mixed with green and black mold covered everything in the room and coated the windows on the opposite wall. The sunlight streaming through the window panes was tinted green and gave the room an eerie sick light. The smell was so bad we had to hold our breath while Bill opened the windows and doors to let some fresh air in. The entire room was soggy. The door to the Garage was swollen in its frame and refused to open.

We realized that this was going to be more than just a roof project. There was structural damage to this home. We knew some professional builders that we could call to help us out and we set out with a mission to make the house livable again. We weren’t sure what it would take or how much it would cost but we were determined to get it done.

The email to Soldiers Angels that started this project:

“The roof of the house is in terrible condition. The ceiling in the room behind
the garage has fallen in and there is a severe mold problem. The rest of the
house has been isolated but is still contaminated. There is a lot more to do than just a roof at this point to get the house livable. “Koolness” –
Assistant Florida State Captain, Patriot Guard Riders.”

Soldier’s Angels Inc. had offered $10,000.00 towards the cost of a roof repair but the lowest bid so far was $13,000.00. The Panhandle Crew of the Patriot Guard Riders “Kool and the Gang” knew it would take a lot more and had promised to raise the rest of the money needed to fix the house.

Scott Henson “The Admiral” and Dan DeBell “Uncle Dan” were asked to give us guidance on where and how to start fixing this home. They both build complex custom homes in upscale areas of the panhandle and have a lot of knowledge and experience. We called on friends and family and professionals from all of the construction trades and asked them to visit the home and give their opinion on how to fix the home.

One builder pointed out that the walls of the severely damaged room were too low to pass the existing building code and not built well enough to support the weight of a proper roof. All of the sheetrock in the entire home would have to be removed and discarded along with the insulation and celotex ceiling materials. Most of the 1960’s era electrical system would have to be removed and replaced. There was one bathroom in the house and there was no way that someone on a cane or walker could get past the sink and bathtub to the commode. The only fix to the plumbing problems would take one of the three bedrooms and convert it to an ADA bathroom which only left one bedroom for two growing boys and the severely damaged master bedroom.

When the experts had finished and offered assistance and some materials to help out, our $13,000.00 roof leak had jumped to a $120,000.00 remodel. The house would have to be reduced to three walls and no roof and stripped almost bare on the inside. Down to a concrete slab with a few two by fours standing around the edges.

While we were speaking to one of the local building inspectors it started to rain. We ducked under the front porch and we watched as rainwater came streaming off of the street, down the driveway and into the garage. Once the garage was full the walkway under the front porch started filling with water and leveled off about a quarter of an inch from the bottom of the front door. The front yard turned into a pond. The room behind the garage had a steady stream of water pouring in. We heard the house creak and moan with the wind.

We all agreed that throwing money at some kind of temporary fix or patch up job was the worst thing that could happen. Whatever we did we had to make sure that Jeremy had a safe place to live and not something that would haunt him for the rest of his life. We would be relying on the good will of the people in this community to make this project possible and came to the painful conclusion that the only way to fix this home was to tear it down and start over.

One of our friends is also an expert in modular homes. He asked one of the modular home companies that he deals with to help us out. In all honesty we were looking for a donated home but in reality that’s asking too much of one business or company. Most of us involved are small business owners. Donations trickled in a few dollars at a time. Offers of materials and labor started coming in. After a lot of thought and consideration Nationwide Custom Homes decided to build us a home for the least cost possible. They went to their suppliers and asked for donations and offered to donate some of the labor needed to construct the home.

On Dec 22cnd a Christmas miracle happened. After 7 months of fundraising, begging and borrowing we handed the keys to a brand new house over to Cpl Jeremy Cabaniss, his wife Deanna, and their two sons.

They are moved in the home at this time but the unpacking will have to wait for awhile. Deanna slipped on ice that had formed on the pavers in her new front yard and shattered her knee cap. She had surgery on the same day and should make a full recovery.

The Cabaniss family is one of the finest that the PGR has had the pleasure to meet. They are humble and are very appreciative and have offered to “Pay it forward”. We never expected that but life is full of the unexpected. If a few bikers from this community can get a home built for a severely wounded soldier, what can you do? It wasn’t easy but then again anything worth while isn’t.

America the beautiful

I came, I saw, I hugged! This past weekend I was priviledged to meet so many of America's heroes, and not all of them wore medals. What follows are a few preliminary notes of how I met so many Americans, who for me epitomise the best of America - who make America GREAT.

Robert Stokely, Gold Star father of Mike, was the absolute highlight for me. Poor guy, he may never recover from all the Brat hugs. :) It was a humbling experience I will never forget to meet, thank and talk with Robert and another Gold Star dad. I was reminded what amazing courage, dignity and grace the families of our troops possess. From Chuck Z (and yes, Mary*Ann I did get in numerous hugs, and yes, he DID follow orders and give me a hug - or two. lol.back!), to Brandon Varn, to Laughing Wolf of Blackfive infamy - infamous IS far more fun, LW! ;) LW also followed orders and returned hugs. LW? You KNOW we will talk more.:) The Patriot Guard Riders I got to hang with: "Koolness" IS really kool, and "Bypass" is a PGR nobody could bypass. You guys rock!

To say there are many heroes in America is truly an understatement and I got to meet and thank them personally. I got to meet up close and personal many Americans who work tirelessly in support of our troops. All the Soldiers' Angels whose names you may never know. You all know by now I love each and every one of you. You all know Patti of course, and yes, I got to meet and thank her for all she does, and for allowing me to be a part of something way bigger than any one person. Because of SA, I got to have the most amazing room mate: Carol from SC - you will always be special to this now "great" auntybrat. I would be remiss if I didn't mention Mrs Z who is the most awesome "girl behind the man behind the gun." Karen, it was a priviledge to meet you. Truly, YOU are a hero to me. Meeting - and yes, hugging....lol - Mary Ann who works in Germany on behalf our heroes, was another highlight for me.

As I said to a policeman at Bob Hope airport, "the Angels have landed." And for the whole weekend I got to witness firsthand the unstoppable power of many hearts joining as one in the common goal of ensuring "may no soldier go unloved." And yes, the police at Bob Hope may never forget the 8 hours the Brat hung out with them. No, they did NOT arrest me, but that's another story for another day...;)

I found out - for myself - that America really DOES care about our troops. Take it from me, every American I saw and spoke to really does appreciate what our troops, and their families do. One of the highlights on the trip home was meeting (by "coincidence..lol) the flight attendant who I talked with. Her husband is a Vietnam vet and she was telling me how he was spat on when he came home. A familiar story to all of US, but she beamed when I told her of the many who are really DO appreciate all that THEY went through - their service to our freedoms. Yes, she now has an Angel pin which she promised me she would wear proudly, and yes a coin is on its way to her husband. I swore to her that "Not on MY watch" will that ever happen again. I gave out more pins and more coins this weekend. I got to feel firsthand, the humility that comes when standing with heroes, and thanking all of them for their service.

I talked with a Brigadier General and his amazing wife after breakfast one morning. By then he was not in uniform, but his dignity was evident as we stood and shared stories and laughed together. I was not so dignified, having just bitten off a chunk of cold breakfast and was clutching the remnants. Ohhhhh boy. I DO owe them BOTH a huge Brat hug - next time...

I got to meet - and thank (and yes, hang out and laugh with..lol) a few of the corporate Americans who support our troops in the way they do best. Kent: I'll be calling you soon!

Another highlight - in a weekend of highlights for me. As the BG, his wife and I were talking, he kept thanking me for my work. As always my comeback was "no, no. It is I who thank all of you. "

So many stories, so many wonderful Americans. I tell you, the best of America was in this one place and I was humbled to be included. So many stories which I will share over time, and yes - pictures were taken. But for me, the most important pictures are now engraved on what I call my "album of the heart", forever!

I got back into Bratville at about 11pm after spending the day loitering at Bob Hope airpoort, BUT what could have been a stress filled day, turned into a day filled with many golden opportunities. You know I talked about the troops at every opportunity. ;) As the day progressed, it looked as if I may not actually get leave America.

As the BG, his wife and I parted company, he again thanked me for whatever it is I do from my small corner of Bratville. (What's with THAT? lol) and I reiterated what drives me in everything I do both here at TB, and within the larger troop support community:

As long as our troops need me, it is my HONOUR to stand for them and with them. It really IS that basic.

Never doubt it. Never let anyone tell you differently. America IS beautiful.

Thank you - thank you all for allowing me into your hearts.

"Only time will tell...."

"This just in..." Those two phrases are the common parlance of newcasts. Today? Both apply to THIS story which I heard before my first coffee.

Fidel Castro (January 15, 2008)

"Dear compatriots,

I promised you on 15 February that in my next reflections I would touch on a subject of interest for many compatriots. This time that reflection takes the form of a message...

I held the honourable position of president for a period of many years... Before that I had held the post of prime minister for nearly 18 years. I always exercised the necessary prerogatives to carry forward our revolutionary work with the support of the vast majority of the people.

Knowing about my critical state of health, many people overseas thought that my provisional resignation from the post of president of the Council of State on 31 July 2006, leaving it in the hands of the First Vice-President, Raul Castro, was definitive. Raul himself, who also holds the post of minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces on his own merit, and my other comrades in the party leadership and the state, were reluctant to think of me removed from my posts despite my precarious state of health...

Preparing the people for my psychological and political absence was my primary obligation after so many years of struggle. I never ceased to say that we were dealing with a recuperation that was "not free from risk". My desire was always to carry out my duties until my final breath. That is what I have to offer.

To my close compatriots, who did me the immense honour in recent days of electing me as a member of parliament, I tell you that I will not aspire to or accept - I repeat - I will not aspire to or accept the post of president of the Council of State and commander-in-chief.

The path will always be difficult and will require the intelligent strength of all of us... Always prepare for the worst scenario. 'Be as prudent in success as you stand firm in adversity' is a principle that must not be forgotten. The adversary we must defeat is extremely strong, but we have kept him at bay for half a century.

I do not bid you farewell. My only wish is to fight as a soldier of ideas. I will continue to write under the title 'Reflections of compadre Fidel'. It will be another weapon in the arsenal on which you will be able to count. Perhaps my voice will be heard. I will be careful."...(here)

Some time back, in an email to Master Gunner, I explained one of the reasons I do not often go into long analyses of matters relating to American politics. I told him that the world is full of "commentators", "reporters" who open their ignorant mouths and confirm they are morons. I told MG I felt no compunction to prove that I was one of those morons.

Today, I am sure that much "ink" will be used pontificating on Castro. And already the airwaves are full of "expert" talking heads going on about the life and legacy of Castro. As I sit here now, someone is going on about the Cuban missile crisis. Yes, I am old enough to remember that.;)

For now, I just post an excerpt from Castro's letter, confident that others will talk their heads off with (ahem...lol) insightful - or not so much - prose, on the ramifications of this not totally unexpected pronouncement. I leave it to others - for now - to project what the future of Cuba may be, as they debate the future for all of us. (Oh, and in the NON moronic realm, lol..check out Spree's post here.)

For now, as I work through my own thoughts and views on Castro leaving, I will just say: "only time will tell"!

For Ellicia

Ellicia, the love of a military man's life. Ellicia, whose journey with cancer her husband shared on the internet. Ellicia, whose fierce determination became so much a part of our lives, we felt - and feel - that she is family. September 3, 2006, Reid wrote My Hardest Post :

The News

...We drove home... numb, but with things we had to do...

The news is this. There are eleven tumors in her brain. If you were to divide her brain into quadrants, then at least two of the tumors would be as large as the quadrant. There are also metastatic tumors in her lungs (again).

So, we have breast cancer, lung cancer, and brain cancer. And like the neurologist told us, while the situation is not hopeless, it is extremely serious. If we do nothing at all, she likely has no more than a few months....(here)

And then, we followed their journey as Reid and Ellicia were in the fight of their lives, all the while raising their beloved children. Then - on December 31, 2006 - came this:

Pain, No More

Ellicia died today. 3:20 PM. It was a long day, but the end was... peaceful. And heart-wrenching. She was told it was ok to go... but, she's stubborn you know...

She's gone now. No more of the horrible hideous pain... for her....

(read this here)

And in the first post above, Reid asks: What now?

Now, Reid is committed to making a difference in other women's lives. He is joining the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Cancer Walk for Ellicia

I'd like to announce that I've decided to partake in the Avon - Walk for Breast Cancer.

The walk will be 26.2 miles long, or more recognizable as the length of a marathon. I think that's significant as battling cancer is often best thought in terms of a marathon - it's a long race.

I'll be walking in Washington, DC - where Ellicia found special memories on our last trip. And significantly, it's the weekend of her birthday - she would have been 41.

Avon's foundation requires a commitment to ensure the successful goal of the walkers. Each walker must make a commitment of a minimum of $1800 in contributions.

I am asking for YOUR help. I'd like to blow past that goal, personally. Breast cancer, like so many cancers, is a horrible disease. We need to keep funding the research to DEFEAT this disease - before it claims too many more of our mothers, wives, daughters, sisters... and little known fact, the men in our society, too.

Please, go to my Avon website where you can donate directly.

If that doesn't work, then you can also click the button below, and those donations will go 100% to the walk.

Thank you for your support. It'll be a long, hard walk... but, as Ellicia taught me, anything is possible. (here)

I don't think there are many families who have not been touched by breast cancer. I know I - too - have been brushed by the shadow of this disease which looms over so many women, and affects, changes, the lives of their families forever.

Like Ellicia, like Reid, I too believe anything is possible. I also have always held firm to the expression: Every soldier is one of our own. Reid IS one of our own. His children are our own. As we support this Walk for Ellicia, we have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of Reid and Ellicia's children, and all children whose families were changed forever by breast cancer.

"We have things to do". Please help. Anything IS possible. For Reid. For Ellicia. For their children.

What are you willing to pay for your freedom? I wonder what the citizens of Berkeley are willing to pay to allow the Code Stinkos to be their assinine selves? From Gail comes this gem:

San Francisco Chronicle

BERKELEY

Marines protest cost $93,000 for police OT

Berkeley spent $93,000 on police overtime to control the Marines protest outside City Hall Tuesday, a city official said.

About 140 Berkeley police officers worked at the protest, which drew more than 2,000 demonstrators from around the country, said Mary Kay Clunies-Ross, public information officer. There were four arrests, all misdemeanors.

The protest was over the City Council's Jan. 29 statement that the Marines, who have a recruitment center downtown, are "unwelcome intruders." After 3 1/2 hours of public comment and debate, the council voted early Wednesday to back down from the statement.

To prevent similar controversies in the future, City Councilman Gordon Wozniak has proposed that every item submitted by the Peace and Justice Commission - where the Marines statement originated - undergo two readings by the council. Usually commission items need one reading.

Peace and Justice commissioners were not happy with the idea.

"It's like he's trying to legislate himself to read what's on his own agenda," said the commission's former president, Steven Freedkin.

Meanwhile, protests continue at the recruiting center on Shattuck Square. About 50 people from Code Pink and World Can't Wait blocked the center entrance for several hours Friday and then marched to UC Berkeley, a block away. There were no arrests. (here)

As Gail says:

Maybe we should continue protesting every council meeting until they apologize :)

We won't even get into exactly what the police did to EARN that $93,000.

Remember the other day when I suggested that this in Berkeley is not over? THIS battle is only just beginning, and we WILL be keeping the pressure on the City Council. (Yes, from sea to shining sea, and to Bratville..lol) I have wondered aloud what else we can do, maybe on the political front, to shut that bunch down, and ensure that our Marines - all our military - can proceed unharassed by Stinkos. Deebow over at Blackfive speaks to this issue.

Berkeley, Sedition, and how to proceed from here

Posted By Deebow

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.

For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.

A murder is less to fear."

I start this post with this quote for one reason...

I hate traitors. (you MUST read the rest here)

I'm with Deebow on this one. My family has shed many gallons of blood over the centuries to ensure freedom for all peoples. My father, in particular, must be rolling in his grave as the Stinkos denegrate the precious value of freedom in present day America. What really saddens me til I can't see straight is that our HEROES not only had to fight in the sandbox - in lands far away; NOW they have to fight here in their own homelands. WHAT is wrong with that picture? When Chuck Z writes:

...More and more often, those of us in uniform are being shunned....Lately, I wonder if the country is worth defending, let alone saving....I think what bothers me most is the distrust of the defenders. People posit that the military would follow orders to establish some kind of police state. In effect, they believe that we are all brainwashed to follow orders without thought. They believe that we are incapable of free thought, that we will follow any order, regardless of its legality....(my original post here)

I don't know whether to cry or scream..BUT make no mistake. Berkeley debacle is not over by a long shot. Stinkos may continue their disgraceful behavior, smugly believing they have won a victory over there. However, it ain't over til the Brat sings, and I am not singing. I AM standing with our troops. NOW and always.

Toledo: Blame the dead guy

Do you all remember the Mayor Toledo? I don't know what the correct title of a Mayor is in America, but it surely isn't anything LIKE "His Honour"! It seems that the Mayor of Toledo has outdone himself in his rush to blame anyone but himself for the outrageous treatment of the Marines in Toledo last week:

MAYOR: DYING COP A FACTOR IN 'COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN'

By Justin R. Kalmes
Toledo Free Press Managing Editor
jkalmes@toledofreepress.com

A Toledo police officer who died Feb. 2 may have been responsible for the "communication breakdown" that led to a Marine Corps unit being denied a scheduled training exercise Downtown, the city's mayor said.

Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner's administration is investigating how a communication lapse occurred between the city and a company of Marine Corps Reservists that led to a recent mayoral controversy.

Finkbeiner, in a Feb. 14 interview, told Toledo Free Press that members of the Toledo Police Department failed to notify him or Chief of Staff Bob Reinbolt of a planned Marine Corps training exercise set for Downtown Feb. 8 to allow adequate time to notify businesses and residents of the scheduled drills. Reinbolt, who was also present at the interview, said an e-mail from Police Chief Mike Navarre dated Feb. 5 was sent to notify him of the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Marines' exercise, but was not received by his mobile communication device until late Feb. 7. (read the rest here)

Speechless? Yes, me too. Whatever happened to taking responsibility? And, the big question? How low will this mayor go to avoid taking responsibility? I hope the "baboons" of Toledo(and yes, I am told that IS what the mayor calls the fine citizens of Toledo who disagree with him.lol) will take some responsibility at the ballot box, and kick this mayor's sorry arse out the door.

NEXT!

Operation Astute

While much is made of Afghanistan being the 'Forgotten War' as many political candidates and Left Wing Groups focus on Iraq, there are many other Areas of Operation throughout the world for both Australian and Coalition countries. As the msm keeps themselves employed by sensationalising the events in Iraq and providing a never ending stream of negative media coverage, many of these other areas are simply forgotten. The tragic reality is that the loss of life in Iraq is what keeps this war in the news. Few are the media agencies that focus on the positive aspects, the rebuilding of homes, communities and lives as the Coalition bring about the dream of freedom and democracy to a country who never dreamed it possible.

Elsewhere in the world, this same dream is being realised by millions of others. One of those places is Timor Leste.....

The 2006 East Timorese crisis began as a conflict between elements of the military of East Timor over discrimination within the military, and expanded to general violence throughout the country, centred in the capital Dili. The crisis prompted a military intervention by several other countries and led to the resignation of the Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri.

Background

The crisis arose out of a dispute within the military of East Timor (F-FDTL), when soldiers from the western part of the country claimed that they were being discriminated against, in favour of soldiers from the eastern part of the country. The Lorosae (Tetum for easterners) formed the largest part of Falintil, the guerilla resistance movement which resisted Indonesian authority, and which in turn, after final independence in 2002, formed the largest part of F-FDTL.[1] In contrast the Loromonu (Tetum for westerners) were less prominent in the resistance, and are less favoured in the present military structure. There has also been tension between the military and the police force, comprised of more westerners and even former members of the Indonesian military.[1]

(Oh and sorry about the links but it is a small nightmare trying to edit them out)

Operation Astute is a United Nations-authorised, Australian-led military deployment to East Timor to quell unrest and return stability in the 2006 East Timor crisis. The operation is currently headed by Brigadier John Hutcheson, and commenced on 25 May 2006 under the command of Brigadier Michael Slater. Other countries deploying soldiers or police to East Timor are Malaysia, New Zealand and East Timor's former colonial power Portugal.

Read more here.....

The Australian Defence Force has recieved considerable negative media attention for it's role in East Timor. However, like any Area of Operation in the world there has been considerable progress made. Our government and Defence Force are committed to helping the people of Timor rebuild their lives amidst the instability of warring factions and militia groups. While there is no high casualty and injury counts for politicians and political groups to use as currency for their own agendas, there is still a degree of risk to the safety of any deployed Soldier that needs to be acknowledged.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy here is that our communities that are safe and distant from the horror and sadness these countries face every day, have simply forgotten how to honour our Soldiers for the job they do. As free people, living in democratic societies we distance ourselves from these conflicts because it simply doesn't affect us. Yet, living amongst us are the people who make our lifestyles possible, the people who will both fight for us and rebuild the lives of the innocent victims of these conflicts.

So to all of our Soldiers, from all of the Coalition Countries who are fighting for us in many Theatres of Operation throughout the world......We Thank You

Special to American Forces Press Service

BAGHDAD, Feb. 14, 2008 – Iraqi police stations officially opened for business Feb. 10 in the Adil, Khadra and Jamia neighborhoods in the Iraqi capital’s Mansour district.

More than 490 recruits graduated from the Camp Fiji Iraqi Police Training Facility in Baghdad, and more than 260 of them were dedicated to the district.

As new policemen learn the ropes of their duties, coalition forces gradually move to an overwatch posture.

“The implementation of a home-grown police force in suburbs of Jamia, Adil and Khadra will allow local Arab men to secure their neighborhoods and homes,” said Army Maj. Chris Budihas, executive officer of 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment. “This will ultimately facilitate our effort to destroy al Qaeda once and for all in the Mansour district of Baghdad.” ...

Good News Friday (B*N*S*N3)

This story, at first read, maybe doesn't really sound like a good news story, BUT it is one you won't find in the msm, (and that is the mandate of B*N*S*N stories after all..lol) If you did find this story in any msm, you might have to acknowledge that coalition countries ARE working together. (Oh, and okay, that it's not just the Americans..lol) No country is working alone in the GWOT:

Reservists in the land of Tom Sawyer

Monday, February 11, 2008
Project Number:07-982

CAMP SHELBY, Mississippi — With Quebec up to its neck in winter as the snow kept piling higher and higher, some 1,500 Canadian Forces Reservists from the 34 and 35 Brigade Groups left for the warmer climes of Mississippi for a unique 10-day experience dubbed Exercise NOBLE GUERRIER.

"The ongoing objective is to prepare our troops for the Afghan operational theatre," said Captain Daniel Turcotte, Operations Officer for the 35 Brigade Group.

But why was Mississippi chosen for this early January exercise?

First of all, the survival conditions created by the cold and snow in Quebec would hinder the exercise. Mississippi, meanwhile, has temperature variations similar to those in Afghanistan at the same time of the year.

"In Quebec, we would be stuck in snow, focusing mostly on survival, and we would lose a lot of time trying to carry out the training," said Capt Turcotte....

I need blood pressure meds....STAT!

Gail sent me the link today to the actual Berkeley City Council meeting:

Here is the video of the city council meeting. If you click on the "jump to" and go to item 25, it'll take you to the part of the meeting regarding this issue. And that is me against the wall in the white sweatshirt to the left of the speakers. At 2:48 Debbie Lee speaks. Get your tissues out for that one. I was tearing up listening to her. at 3:26:55 is when I yield my time :)

I just watched this video, and to say I need blood pressure meds is an understatement. BUT, to listen to Debbie Lee is to reaffirm why any of us do what we do. Snippets:

"I have written to all of you, and only one bothered to respond. Mayor, I am appalled at what this city has done...I am demanding an apology... I have 18,000 signatures...you owe our [troops] and apology... I have earned respect...

You really MUST go watch this video here. Directly following Debbie were two high school students. The ignorance! WHAT are they teaching the kids there?

A veteran:

...It is despicable that I have to come here and educate you people...

Another long time supporter of the council told them:

I am speaking for my Lt. son... I have always supported you but you have done a bad thing here. My son directly saved the life of an Iraqi child, and they liberated a town from the real rapists and murderers...

And - a woman called Rosalind informed the Council:

...I demonstrate on Wednesdays for Code Pink...

Isn't that special? Good job some called Ros demonstrate support FOR OUR TROOPS, every day of the week, and not just on Wednesday (oh, you knew I would have to do that one.lol) Go, now and watch the whole thing here.

Many veterans stood up, spoke up. A couple of my favourite lines?

"...The Marines are not leaving. Not now, not ever..."

Wonder how long it is going to take for Code Stinkos to 'get' this?

And if none of anything else makes you stand a bit straighter, if nothing else affirms our resolve? This veteran:

...You may run, but we will NOT run...

OORAH! Semper Fi, Marines.

Oh, and "this just in" lol..Gail sent me a link to "raw video" of protesters and police. Go here for that. Gives me a headache to watch such ignorance. As Gail says "Just to confirm what I was saying about the thugs. Listen to the lies. That girls face looks really good for having been "punched in the face three times today"... You got that right.

Brat(and of course, Gail)

Our source tells it like it is

As you all know, one of our Tanker Sisters was in the fray yesterday, and was reporting in to me throughout the day. Until she was safely home, I was reluctant to name her but I can tell you it was Gail who braved the nauseous pink and stood her ground as a true patriot troop supporter. Do we have the greatest readers in blogland or what? :)

It was Gail who witnessed and reported on those poor innocent students who just 'happened' across the real life lesson in civic politics. Don't bother weeping for the kids though. From the Daily Californian comes this:

At least 150 Berkeley High School students became involved in yesterday's day-long protests against the Marine Corps recruiting center in Downtown Berkeley-including at least two students who were arrested.

Despite attempts to minimize the impact the protest had on students at the nearby high school, Berkeley Unified School District officials estimate at least 50 students cut class to join the protests.

Many students put on orange scarves and T-shirts given to them by organizers of The World Can't Wait, a group that aims to "drive out the Bush regime."

Some students became involved in verbal and physical confrontations between the two groups protesting, resulting in the arrest of a 13-year-old, a 15-year-old and an 18-year old.

School and police officials could not confirm whether the minors arrested were Berkeley High School students. ..(read the rest of this here)

My emphasis there. That's not quite how Gail reports what happened:

Cal Berkeley newspaper: http://www.dailycal.org/ the one about the high schoolers is here. If you click on the blurb an article will come up. The part about the kids being discouraged from attending was not true. I heard teachers on a loud speaker organizing the students to go down to the protest when I walked down to the bathroom. (there was a real bathroom attached to a city building at the opposite end of the park from the protest. The berkeley high school was across the street from this building/park)

Gasp! Aren't you just all shocked along with me? Not so much huh?

That's the tax dollars at work. Maybe they put something in the gourmet lunches that are catered for thse ifnorant little *****. You know, the lunches that the Semper Fi intends to include in the withdrawal of funding for. ;)

Forget where I read it, but one student was arrested for slapping a policeman. Imagine that! Obviously being taught respect for those in uniform..NOT! But we know this already.

Arthur Hanes and other students from Berkeley High join anti-war protesters at Civic Center Plaza in Berkeley. Chronicle photo by Paul Chinn

Never mind respect for a uniform, seems some students don't even respect "freedom of choice". You know, freedom to CHOOSE to join our military and serve our countries. Oh it must be the rewritten history textbooks these kids have been spoonfed. You all will know how this all galled me mightily, since I HAVE worked with kids in 3 different countries. Siiiiiiigh.. "What's the matter with kids today?" Guess I am getting old or something....Maybe just as well I am not THESE kids' teacher....

Gail took LOTS of pictures, and it is really hard to pick a favourite but here's one that I particularly like:

Photobucket

And then there's this one:

Photobucket

And then there was this one. Pretty clear, I'd say:
Photobucket

There are lots more of Gail's pictures here. Check them all out, and remind yourself what patriots look like.

We know that Code Pink does not speak for US, and yesterday they proved - yet again - how little respect they really have for our military and their families. Remember yesterday Gail told us how a protester was in the face of a Blue Star Mum? It has been documented elsewhere how MAF tried to enlist the help of law enforcement when they were being accosted by Code Pinkos. No help was given, and I suggest that part of the story is just beginning.

As Code Pink has proved over and over again, they have NO dignity, no respect. This is in direct contrast to our military families. So as not to leave you with a bad taste in your mouth, I decided to close this round up with pictures from yesterday that remind me - just about every day - what WE at Tanker Bros will always support. Our military families. Time and again, our Gold Star, Blue Star and Silver Star families display such dignity, such grace, Code Stinkos are not fit to be in the same neighbourhood. Families like the May family, the Stokely family, the Tainsh family, and yes, our very own Tanker family, and so many more, deserve so much better than the disgusting histrionics typical of Code Stinkos.

Camp Berkeley: It's not over til....

Throughout today, different write-ups and different pictures have been sent to me. If it is true - and I believe it is - that a picture says a thousand words, I decided to let the pictures tell the story. One of my personal faves?

It really is THAT basic, isn't it? OORAH!

Yes, as someone said in previous comments, it really is true that the good guys have a sense of humour. What's not to love about this guy's hat? But ummmmmmmm, seriously, I wonder what the ratio in Berkeley is of shrinks to residents? Just a thought.;)

I refuse to give those "not so pretty in pink" any space on here. As someone else pointed out in comments, the pink on display yesterday WAS the shade of Pepto-Bismol......Most appropriate description as earlier this week, I WAS chugging back the Pepto over here, as I tried not to puke because of the prevailing insanity.

Telling it like it is!

If only silly is all they are. Siiiiiiiiiiiiigh... I can think of more than a few other adjectives, but I like this one!

I'm thinking it won't matter what colour the burkas come in. If Al Qaeda arrive in Berkeley (and I am not totally convinced they aren't there already. Just sayin') I reckon these silly women - yea I am being 'kind'...lol......won't be given the opportunity to worry about their fashion sense......Oh wait, they don't have any sense of any sort now.......Ooooooops!

There are lots more pictures here, at Little Green Footballs. Check it out if you still like the colour pink!

And no, this isn't over til the BRAT sings. Same old tune, I know! (Sorry, Don...lol)

2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne (Air Assault)
June 26, 2006

"His platoon leaders described him as the type of soldier every leader wants: A very talented, dedicated soldier, who did everything that was asked of him." That's what Lt. Col. Greg Butts, commander of the Army's 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, said about Cpl. Ryan J. Buckley at his memorial service. "I'm glad I could come here. It was an opportunity to recognize one of my great soldiers."

Cpl. Buckley lost his life on June 26, 2006 when an IED detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Baghdad. "I held him while he died," Spc. Richard Morris, a fellow soldier who was wounded in the attack, said after the service. "He was my best friend. This nation has lost a hell of a soldier."

Ryan Buckley, a 2003 graduate of Hillsboro High School, was attending Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield in March 2004 when he left school to join the Army. He had told his mother on 9/11 that he planned to join the military to defend his country. Jennings Carter, who recently retired from the Army, was the commander of the Litchfield Army Recruiting Station when Buckley signed up. Carter said Buckley was an unusually cheerful young man. "Every time we saw him, he was always smiling," Carter said. "Before he went to Iraq, we saw him a few times. He was always happy. He would come by and tell us what he was doing."

Jean Buckley, Buckley's aunt, said he was always a responsible young man, who took his school work seriously, as well as his role in the school bands. The talented French horn player was awarded the John Philip Sousa award his senior year as the outstanding band member.

"He was always a protector," Jean Buckley said. "It's such a sad time. We're so thankful for the Ryans of the world. I appreciate all the veterans and all they've done for this country."

Cpl. Buckley was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Iraq from Nov. 30 to June 23. Bronze Stars were presented to his wife of one year, Tina Buckley, his mother, Sally Nation, and father, Dennis Buckley.

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.
We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived

Judi McLeod over at Canada Free Press poses an important question, based on a valid observation:

Code Pink lays bare soft underbelly for easiest attack for those who mean America harm

By Judi McLeod Wednesday, February 13, 2008

imageQuestion on the day after Berkeley Police stood by and watched “Peace Freaks” attack Patriots in Hotel California: If Code Pink can take over Berkeley why can’t Al Qaeda?

“Berkeley erupted in violence Tuesday morning when the Communist, terrorist-supporting anti-war group crossed into Martin Luther King Park and assaulted pro-troop individuals. ( www.MichelleMalkin.com). “Riot police stood by, but did not stop the assaults. Police agencies did not respond to calls for help.”

Code Pink suspended public safety in an American city if only for a day.

They must have been whooping it up and dancing over at al Jazeera. What encouraging news to pass on to the Brotherhood.

“It’s mayhem on here,” Move America Forward communications director Danny Gonzales said from the park early Tuesday morning....(my emphasis)[Go read the rest here]

You can bet the farm that al Jazeera and al Qaeda were just lovin it all. They DO have internet, ya know. ;) Maybe Berkeley has moved to the top of their list of easy targets. Goodness knows, the police won't raise an eyebrow.. But wait; want to bet the Code Stinkos would be the first to scream for the Marines? Uhuh, you know it, and Marines being Marines, they WILL answer the call. Is what Marines do. God love our troops - every single one of them..Siiiiiiiiigh..
And yes - go here and check out more awesome pictures. Thanks Snooper!

The insanity continues. The msm is now 'reporting' - finally! But with this:

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — City council members who were criticized for telling Marine recruiters they don't belong here have moderated their position, saying they oppose the Iraq war but support the troops....The council members say they still strongly oppose the war and the recruitment of young people, but "deeply respect and support" the men and women of the armed forces....

Puleeeeeeeeeeeeze! Give me a break. I know every Tanker Bros reader gets the bs quotient loud and clear on this one. Check out the rest of this one here, while we wait for the REAL story. THIS version is old news. We all know about "we oppose the war, but support the troops." Ya think? NOT!

But to give you a smile to start your day, go over to PipelineNews.org and take a look at the pictures there. The write up is cool, too. Here:

Doesn't that just warm the cockles of your heart? :) Semper Fi!!!

That from the comments of the previous post. There is more coming! Stay tuned....

Straight from the horse's errrrrrrrrrrr ...mouth!

Still waiting on word on how the Council meeting shook down, but in the meantime, something from Code Pink's site that was sent to me this morning:

Q: Why are you protesting the Marines Officer Recruiting Station (MRS) in Berkeley?

Answer: Our immediate goal is to have clear zoning regulations for military recruiting and to put citizen pressure to shut down the existing recruiting station that is just blocks from Berkeley City College, UC Berkeley, and Berkeley High School. Our overriding goal is to end the war in Iraq now. We are not protesting the marines themselves, but the machine that recruits our youth and sends them off to fight in an illegal and immoral war in Iraq. (My comment - call me confused BUT...not protesting the Marines (not capitalized by them) but the machine that recruits....what they hell is the difference?)

Q: Don't the Marines have a right to free speech and to do business?

Answer: The Marines don't even allow their own members full rights of free speech. So maybe you need to ask them that question. As far as doing business, cities have the right to regulate the businesses they allow into their community. Our initiative will give the citizens of Berkeley that right. (My comment - Freedom of Speech? You must be kidding me? Cities can regulate the businesses? Hug? If I wanted to open a popcorn shop and they didn't want to have another one cuz, maybe the mayor's wife has one, they could tell me to go away???)

Q: The Marines and the rest of the military protect your freedom of speech. Isn't protesting them hypocritical?

Answer: No, they do NOT protect our freedom of speech by engaging in an illegal war against a country that never attacked us; WE protect our freedom of speech -- and assembly -- by exercising those rights.
What is hypocritical is to say the marines protect free speech and then ask that we not use it. (My comment - The Marines do NOT protect "our" Freedom of Speech? You must be kidding me!)

Q: Don't you women have better things to do, like take care of your husbands and families?

Answer: Caretaking is a traditional womanly value which we continue in the realm of public politics. We work to take care of the world, our country and fellow human beings everyday. We feel our military has better things to do, like protect citizens here at home and not have their own be torn apart by this war/occupation.

In front of the MRS, we demonstrate the peaceful alternatives to militarism, including meditation, yoga, conversation, singing, a baby play group, a Friday afternoon “kiss – don’t enlist” party and other activities. We enjoy warm public support in downtown Berkeley. (My comment - I need a barf bag!)

Q:Does this protest mean that you don't support our troops?

Answer: “Support the troops” has become empty rhetoric. We want new recruits to be told the truth and our military to be brought home and no longer be an occupying force. That’s the best way to support the troops. We also vigorously support fully funding health care and family benefits for our returning veterans, who suffer at record-breaking levels from traumatic brain injury, depression and other mental disorders, multiple traumatic injuries, and exposure to Depleted Uranium. (My comment - empty rhetoric? Huh?)

Q:What right does the city of Berkeley have to pass such a resolution and consider the initiative?

Answer: Any city has the right, through its zoning ordinances, to regulate the place and manner of a commercial establishment. This initiative is grassroots democracy at work, for it gives the people of Berkeley the right to make this decision. Moreover, the Municipal Code of the City of Berkeley says that “Initiatives are needed to reverse the drift toward war and to remove the causes of war.” So this initiative is actually part of the city’s mandate. (My Comment - I didn't look up the municipal code of Berkeley but...surely their municipal code doesn't mention war and causes of war? Don't they have REAL issues to take care of that affect the city and it's citizens. Worse than I even imagined!)

Q: Does the federal government have the power to cut off funding to the city of Berkeley?

Answer: NO. The use of such a threat to withdraw federal funding for schoolchildren’s healthy lunches, for example, just shows the depths to which ill-informed opponents of this campaign, such as Senator DeMint, have sunk. The people of Berkeley will not be intimidated by empty and debasing threats. (My comment - loud peels of laughter! I don't think I need to say more!)

Source: http://www.codepinkalert.org/article.php?id=3923

The comments in italics are Leta's - she sent this to me. And forgive me if I am a tad confused, BUT since when does a city decide where a federal body (in this case the military.lol) does it's business? And again, we ARE at war, are we not? So I would think that any city in the nation would welcome a military presence. Or did I miss something here? Those comments are just for starters! Forget the horses' mouth. Can we say "horses' ass"? My apologies to the equines....beautiful, majestic creatures that THEY are.;)

Stay tuned!

"It is very scary out here... There was a BIG fight - two students were arrested. One student pushed a Blue Star Mum. The Marines came over. While the students were being arrested, the high school advisers were yelling : 'they are just kids...'... I needed to go to the bathroom. It was very scary. So three Marines escorted me. Right now, they are letting 30 from each side to enter the City Council for the Council meeting. I don't know if I will get in."

"Just kids...." yeaaaaa right. Do I need to tell anyone what is wrong with this picture? I asked our source that if she did not get into the Council meeting, to give my phone number to someone who DOES.

Meanwhile from Toledo....

The Mayor of Toledo heard from a *few* Americans ;) THIS is the reply to one American:

Subject: Statement from Mayor Carty Finkbeiner re. Marine Corps.

Thank you for your thoughts. Your message will be conveyed to the Mayor. Attached is the Mayor's Statement to the Media and a statement from Lt. Colonel Piccoli, U.S. Marine Corps on this issue.

Statement from Mayor Carty Finkbeiner -Regarding U.S. Marine Corps.
February 10, 2008

Frank Szollosi can play politics with anything. It is what he does best.

Today, I spoke with Major Jeff Brooks of the United States Marine Corps. I conveyed my sincere regret for the failure to communicate within the administration and any inconvenience that caused the U.S. Marine Corps.

I also conveyed, as my staff did on Friday, that we would make available abandoned buildings for Marine training outside of the CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT (CBD).

I concluded by reviewing my belief that the CBD, particularly on a weekday afternoon, was not available for military staging operations. 10,000 - 14,000 men and women would have been departing their offices in downtown Toledo on Friday afternoon with a major military training action unfolding - including the use of weapons being discharged with blanks.

My interest is not only in supporting the U.S. military wherever and whenever such support is sought, but also protecting the health, peace, and tranquility of Toledoans in every way possible.

For those who disagree with my priorities in terms of safeguarding Toledoans, we may disagree, but you have my respect.

Statement from Lt. Colonel Piccoli - U.S. Marine Corps
February 11, 2008

Although our planned training event for Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th
Marine Regiment from Grand Rapids, Mich., did not occur over the weekend in the Central Business District of Toledo, Ohio, we greatly appreciate the commitment of the city leaders and the support of the citizens of Toledo to assist us with future training opportunities in the Toledo area.

As the Marine Corps has done in myriad cities in the past, which includes Columbia, S.C. (2003), New Orleans (2004), Savannah, Ga. (2005), and Hampton Roads, Va. (2006), we'll continue to work very closely with community leaders, law enforcement personnel, members of the media and private citizens to ensure our training does not adversely impact them. Such training, coupled with governmental and civic support, enables the U.S. Marine Corps to meet the country's expectations as the nation's premiere force in readiness.

The U.S. Marine Corps stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Toledo as we move forward together well into the future.

This was written to my friend Laura. You may remember her comments in a recent post. BUT, she assures me:

This is what I received today.. LOL Just thought I would share with you.
And believe it or not... I was nice about what I had to say:)

Suuuuuuuuure you were, Laura! I believe you..;) But, do I believe this statement from the Mayor's office? Uhuh...Doesn't he just ooooooooooooooze sincerity? You decide..lol

And yes, still waiting on further word from our intrepid supporter in Berkeley. I do hope she has not been arrested.. Stay tuned.

Required reading for Code Stinkos

Came across the two following items. Again, no commentary by me needed.....Our troops do VERY well speaking for themselves.

From Chuck Z:

Lamentations
Berkley. Toledo. Verizon. Hilton. The list goes on endlessly.
More and more often, those of us in uniform are being shunned. Reading commentary on news articles, it’s apparent that many view the military as a dreadnaught, bent on the eventual establishment of a military dictatorship. Many feel we should be kept separate from the population—left to train, fight, and live away from civilians. They feel that our training to conduct Stability and Support operations is secretly planned to “desensitize” the population to accept military presence and eventually, military rule.

Lately, I wonder if the country is worth defending, let alone saving. People refer to posse commitatus as cause to keep the military away from civilians. PC is really a law that says we can’t be used AGAINST the citizenry and can’t be used to conduct Police action against citizens. Granted, there are times when the military is used for civilian population control—LA, Watts, Chicago—and disaster relief (Katrina, Hugo, Andrew)—and even to fight forest fires. These are extreme conditions that require the use of our specialized abilities. Abilities like manpower, communications, logistical and medical support, and WAY down the list is law enforcement.

I think what bothers me most is the distrust of the defenders. People posit that the military would follow orders to establish some kind of police state. In effect, they believe that we are all brainwashed to follow orders without thought. They believe that we are incapable of free thought, that we will follow any order, regardless of its legality....

If you do nothing else today, GO and read the rest of this particular piece here. Then, be sure and bookmark Chuck!

A Navy SEAL, in his own words

A dear friend of mine's brother, who is currently serving in Iraq drafted this letter. Feel free to copy and disseminate as widely as you'd like. If you have a dissenting opinion on this one, I suggest you keep it to yourself. I welcome discourse to almost everything I post. There are exceptions. This is one of them.

In the early hours on Monday morning, an American Task Force took down a terrorist compound in Iraq. In the ensuing fight, two US Navy SEALs were killed by small arms fire while clearing one of the buildings - Chief Petty Officers Nathan H. Hardy and Michael E. Koch.

Nate Hardy, 29, enlisted in the US Navy in 1997 and is survived by his wife - Mindy, 7 month old son - Parker, parents and brother.

Mike, also 29, enlisted in 1998 and had a fiancée, parents, brother and sister.

Both Koch and Hardy families have a tradition of service. The Kochs are vets and contractors (in Iraq and Afghanistan) and Hardy's grandfather served with John F. Kennedy on PT-109 during WWII. Mike's brother escorted the bodies of the two SEALs back to the states. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Koch, Hardy and SEAL families. Below is message from a friend serving in Iraq:

Last Sunday while most of America was enjoying the Superbowl several members of our Task Force were commencing an assault on a terrorist stronghold in Iraq. During the assault two of our brothers from the Navy were shot and killed while clearing a building that was occupied by terrorist insurgents. Ultimately, the building was reduced and all of the terrorists in it were destroyed by the assault force. Remember these names, Mike and Nate. They were good men doing honorable work in the name of freedom. The terrorists they sought to destroy were responsible for unspeakable acts of evil including the construction of improvised explosive devices and explosives to equip homicide bombers. For those of you who may not understand the enemy we face out here let me remind you that the previous week this group of terrorists took two innocent and unwitting women who had Downs Syndrome, rigged them with explosive vests and detonated them 20 minutes apart in a crowded market causing several deaths and hundreds of injuries. These terrorists used innocent people as unwitting vehicles to destroy more innocent lives. There is good and there is evil in this world. The enemy we face is evil. Mike and Nate were fighting on the side of good to prevent further acts of evil that would result in the loss of more innocent lives. The next time you pray I ask you to thank God for giving Mike and Nate the talent and skill that made them great warriors and thank God that he gave them the heart to apply those God given talents to destroy evil and further the cause of freedom in a land far from their home. Thank God for men like Mike and Nate. Their work is done here now, but there are many of us who will honor their sacrifice by continuing the fight against evil terrorists. They will be remembered through our actions.

For any of you out there who are doubting the validity of this war and the evil that resides in our enemy I ask you to study your history again. Over the last 20+ years dating back to the bombing of the Marine Corps Barracks in Lebanon, various factions of radical Islamic Terrorists have been committing heinous acts of terrorism against the free world. We are fighting the same enemy here. The brethren of an evil ideology that spawned the terrorists attacks of September 11, 2001 claiming almost 3,000 innocent lives. Take time to reflect on the type of evil that would put explosive vests on innocent women with Downs Syndrome and use them to kill and maim other innocent people. While the American media strives everyday to rewrite the history of the most generous nation in the free world and cast disparity over all that we do as a Nation men like Mike and Nate are giving their lives to make sure the real history doesn't repeat itself. While the American media strives daily to erase the memory of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and paint this war as an unjust occupation of a sovereign nation men like Mike and Nate are out here hunting down and destroying the enemies of the very freedom that allows our media to try and discredit us. Terrorism is real, evil is real, this war is real and real men and women are in this fight because righteousness and freedom are worth fighting for.

If you don't support this war I'm calling you out. I've had enough of people sitting in their living rooms watching the lying media and jumping on the bandwagon against this war. Don't ever say to me, "I support the troops, but not the war."...

Go - NOW! - and read the rest of this one here. Then, do us all a favour. Print both of these pieces and give them to anybody you meet (or know...lol) who STILL doesn't "get" it.

Teach your children......Berkeley update

"Is now more vocal, on both sides." That's part of what I just heard. But ya remember DeMint et al efforts to withdraw funding from Berkeley? Seems they might need funds to buy dictionaries for the high school students.

"High school students on the Code Pink side, keep dropping the "f" bomb.. One student even called one of OUR supporters, the "c" word."

Seems the education dollars are being really well spent in Berkeley these days. Hmmmmmm .

Again from our intrepid source:

"A white truck had a POW/MIA flag on it. One of the students said 'get that s*** out of here.' Code Pink is not wearing pink so much as orange and black...the police are now working at keeping the groups apart. "

During this call, bratdog decided to bark loudly. I did volunteer to send her down there, but wondered about infections.

Can you believe what foul mouths the youngsters have? Must be a code pink virus affecting their vocal chords. How pathetic. Ooooooops, I said I wasn't going to editorialise. Me bad.

A call just in to me from the frontlines. No surprise, but Code Stinkos are playing for the cameras. It seems that Code Stinks were supposed to stay on one side, and OUR guys have the park. Guess what? Code Stinks are ignoring that and in the park harassing troop supporters.

I am told police are there, but just standing around.. According to MY source, numbers are: Code Stinkers "about a dozen", and "we have about a hundred right now."

The day is young, and I will be giving updates as the time goes.

This just in from Old Tanker:

Via Michelle Malkin, looks like Code Pinko's were allowed to cross the street and began assaulting Move America Forward types in Berkeley. The Berkeley police and the California Highway Patrol refused to help.......

My Choice: By Sgt Seth Conner

Sgt. Seth Conner has something to say:

My Choice
By Sgt. Seth Conner
Monday, February 11, 2008

Like my Marine brothers who fought alongside me in the Battle of Fallujah, I know a little something about choices.

When the nosecones of 767 passenger jets punched into the Twin Towers, my choice was simple to make. My choice was not, as the patchouli-smelling Berkeley hippies would have you believe, the duplicitous work of “salespeople known to lie to and seduce minors and young adults into contracting themselves into military service with false promises.” By that rationale, car salesmen are responsible for the 40,000 Americans who will die this year on the nation’s highways.

US Army soldiers carry an ill Iraqi Sunni man on a stretcher to a makeshift hospital outside Fallujah, 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Baghdad, Iraq, Monday, Jan. 28, 2008. About 75 families had to leave their Sunni village because of sectarian violence a year ago and US Army and Iraqi Army are helping them now to return to their homes. (AP Photo/Ahmed al-Husseini)

Nice try.

No, as shocking as it may be to radical anti-military haters, the overwhelming majority of young soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines like myself are deeply proud of the choice we made. As shocking as it may seem to the Code Pink crowd, we feel blessed to have been given the chance to defend our nation and be steeled and shaped by those charged with leading us.

Ironically, for people who claim to be “tolerant,” “open-minded,” and “peace-loving,” theBerkeley protestors and their ilk proved just what a sham their operation truly is. If they were really interested in saving the lives of innocents, they would listen to the countless stories veterans bring back from Iraq about pivotal moments of decision that saved lives—both American and Iraqi....

You really MUST go read the rest of what Sgt Conner has to say. Find that here. The good Sgt is so eloquent, so CLEAR, nobody needs to read anything I might try and add.

Sgt. Conner: You ROCK! Thank you... thank you for your service.

Monday, Monday

Good Morning, America, how are you? I chose this picture of the Betsy Ross flag for a number of reasons. In case you don't know what that flag represents, go here and read. Isn't that beautiful?

On this Monday morning America, it looks to me as if you are under siege in all sorts of places. We all know about Camp Berkeley. (And yes, Deebow over at Blackfive has a good one up about it - here - too. Read it later...lol) However, I dare to say our Marines are being taken care of, and tomorrow is another new day ;) OORAH!

Toledo, anyone? What a difference a weekend makes. NOT! Well, unless ya count the Mayor of Toledo digging himself into an ever deeper hole.

Mayor kicks Marines out of Toledo

1-24th Marines were scheduled for weekend urban warfare training in downtown Toledo, when Carty gave them the boot

Carty 180

Toledo police said they knew about the training and had approved the unit’s use of the Madison Building and the Promenade Park area. The training was scheduled to start Friday afternoon and last until Sunday. Police said the unit’s presence would have a minimal impact on the city. Police issued a press release earlier in the week saying the Marines would be wearing green camouflage uniforms, operate military vehicles, carry rifles, perform foot patrols, and fire blank ammunition during the exercise.

[Mayor's spokesman] Schwartz said there was a breakdown in communication between police and the Finkbeiner administration that led to the mayor’s action.

“The Marines drilled here three times during the Ford administration and once under the Finkbeiner administration. After the last visit, the mayor told then police Chief Jack Smith, that he did not want the marines back. Smith failed to inform the current police administration of the mayor’s feelings,” Schwartz said.

NBC24 spoke to Jack Smith who recalled that after the Marines last visit, he and the mayor had a heated exchange about the training.

“He told me he did not want them, as he put it, 'playing war in Toledo,'" Smith recalled. "I told him, as a former Marine, that if one young Marine’s life is saved because of training he or she received in Toledo, Ohio, then it was worth the inconvenience.”

Smith said if the mayor objected, then he should have been the one to convey those feelings to police. Smith took his run-in with the mayor as an objection to that last visit and not future training in Toledo. As a result, the Toledo police went ahead, granting approval to the 1-24th Marines to conduct the routine exercise. The police notified members of the Finkbeiner administration who were not aware that the mayor objected to units training in Toledo.

When the mayor found out, he sent a member of his staff to tell Marines they could not conduct urban operations in Toledo. The unit was notified about 3:30 p.m. after an advance team arrived in Toledo. Five buses carrying some 200 Marines traveled four hours from Grand Rapids, only to find out the training had been shot down.

He said, he said. Same old, same old! Read the rest of this "news" here.

Follow along now :) As I read all this crap? Reminded of the line: What we have here is a failure to communicate." Well, as we all know, politics being what they are, 'fun' continued. The good Mayor of Toledo was finding out that having Marines "play war" (excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me,? Ass!) in his town would have been a lot safer than the fallout from his take charge attitude:

Article published Sunday, February 10, 2008
Finkbeiner taking flak over Marines
Mayor defends his decision to cancel urban war games

Some compared the flap to the one Mr. Finkbeiner set off during his first term in 1994, with his proposal that the city move its deaf population to land near Toledo Express Airport.
"It makes Toledo look like a national disgrace," said Steve Baxter, 47, of Columbus, who learned of the ordeal through a national political blog. "And it reflects poorly on your mayor."
Former Marine Brian Thompson, 40, of West Toledo said he was in disbelief when he first picked up the newspaper. Soon his feelings turned to anger.
"My perception now is that Carty feels it is OK for Marines to die in Iraq, but just don't come to Toledo," said the 13-year Marine Corps veteran. "The better trained the men and women are, the better chances that they'll come home alive."
In response to his critics, Mayor Finkbeiner declared his absolute support for the Marines Corps as well as all of the nation's armed forces - yet still defended his decision to send the Marines packing.
"No matter how much I respect, love, and appreciate the military, there are better places to conduct military planning and staging sessions than the central business district," Mayor Finkbeiner told The Blade. "I think the military brass would understand and appreciate that."...(here)

Now ya see, Carty? Getting people all upset. Ya just don't seem to learn, Mr Mayor, that Toledo is not your personal kingdom to do with as you, please. Shame on you... everyone else in the good town of Toledo knew what was going on but the Mayor.

Reservists with Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines out of Grand Rapids, Mich., pack up some of their urban warfare training gear outside the nearly vacant Madison Building in Downtown Toledo Feb. 8, after Mayor Carty Finkbeiner told them to leave the city.

DOWNTOWN TOLEDO -- In a news conference Saturday evening, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner said the reason why he asked 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion 24th Marines of Grand Rapids, Mich., to halt their urban warfare training Friday and leave, came down to poor planning and lack of communication.

Although Alpha Company has used Downtown Toledo in the past, as well as Perrysburg's Weapons Company, for urban warfare-type training, Mayor Finkbeiner decided against this weekend's training scenarios because he wasn't given a reasonable head's up or enough time to stop it before it had begun.(here)

Okay, so I kinda screwed that up a bit, but you get the idea. And ummmm, guess we can be glad Toledo isn't in Baghdad or Afghanistan. Every soldier knows what "poor planning and lack of communication" can do for you there. Talking lack of communication? MORE "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS" BROUGHT TO YOU BY VERIZON MANAGEMENT

WARNING: Reading this could cause your hair to start on fire. You've been warned.

John Ruberry at Marathon Pundit just sent an email alert about our good friends at Verizon Wireless. After reading the post, it's clear to me that Verizon just needs a good, old fashioned, blogger beat down. Sometimes corporations simply lose their way and need a little economic slap up-side-the-head to get them back to thinking more clearly. From Marathon Pundit:

*****
"A member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, Terry recently returned from his third tour duty in the Middle East. He is a genuine patriot and has proudly flown his unit's American flag over the sands of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan.

When he's not defending our country overseas, Terry Skiest works as a technician for Verizon Business. For three years, Terry displayed his American flag outside his cubicle. But when Terry left his flag hanging outside his cubicle during his last tour in Afghanistan, Verizon Business removed it.

A co-worker of Skiest's reported that a local manager said that the American flag 'could be considered to be propaganda' and 'might be offensive to some workers.'

Terry isn't trying to organize workers against VZB - he just wants to put the flag back up on his wall. Tell Verizon Business to put up Terry's flag."

That's from ThirdWaveDave here, and you really have to go read his thoughts. I'm telling you, something in the water...;) "Might be offensive to some people", "propaganda"??? You have got to be kidding me...Is that for real? Ummmmmm someone tell Verizon to check out the history of flag flying. Oh and yes, ThirdWaveDave DOES have contact info for Verizon. :) (Monday morning mission, anyone?)

There is a site Put Up the Flag with a must-see video and all sorts of info on. Go here for that.

O, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming..

Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

(Really, go here for a fascinating history.)

So yes, it is 'Monday, Monday' in America. I don't know about all of you, but from where I sit, waaaaaay over here, there really DOES seem to be something in the water, and in the air in some parts of your country. Very strange times we are living in.

Let's go into the week with this timeless reminder of traditions that make America great. OOORAH!

Every Day Heroes

Meet Marine 1st Sgt Paul Archie:

Paul Archie

Paul Archie

The Story:

A year ago, many people fretted that Iraq’s Anbar province was lost. Yet since then progress has come at an almost unthinkable pace, the results of principled and dangerous work by Marines working with locals. As the top enlisted Marine in his company, 1st Sgt. Archie provided consistent leadership in battle from August 2006 through February 2007, a key period of the turnaround in Anbar.

In October of last year, insurgents launched a brazen attack on his company’s base: mortars, rockets, AK-47’s, and a suicide bomber driving a truck. Archie coordinated the defense of the base by setting up fortifications on six rooftops and sending out Humvees to block roads from incoming insurgents. Under constant and heavy fire, he moved throughout the battlefield, making sure his Marines had everything they needed. He also successfully oversaw the evacuation of two wounded Marines from the fight. Archie is largely credited for the defense of the base during the intense hour-long fight.

That was not 1st Sgt. Archie’s only encounter with insurgents: His company saw combat all over Anbar during the seven-month deployment. In all, Archie undertook more than 200 combat missions and guided his company through more than 100 engagements with the enemy. Archie estimated that in many areas, there was a 50 percent chance his unit would face an Improvised Explosive Device attack.

For his leadership, dedication, and courage, 1st Sgt. Archie received the Bronze Star with the Combat Distinguishing Device at Camp Lejeune on July 30, 2007. (source)

Yes, I deliberately chose a Marine this week! Thank you for your service 1st Sgt. Archie.

Responds to Pro-War Attack on Marine Recruiting
Station Campaign

When: Monday, February 11, 7pm until 7pm on Tuesday
February 12th, when the Berkeley City Council meets.

Where: Maudelle Shirek City Hall, 2134 Martin Luther
King Jr. Way, Berkeley. (at Allston Way, 4 blocks from
the Downtown Berkeley BART).

Members of the women's peace group CODEPINK launched a
campaign to close the Berkeley Marine Recruiting
Station. The pro-war forces, represented by the group
Move America Forward, are mobilizing to descend on
Berkeley on Tuesday, February 12, starting at 5am!
They plan to spend the day attempting to intimidate
the peace-loving City and City Council.

"This struggle is not about the Marines as
individuals. It's about the occupation of Iraq. It's
about recruiting our youth to be those occupying
forces in Iraq. It's about the 1.2 million dead
Iraqis, the 3,950 dead U.S. soldiers, the trillions of
dollars of our taxpayer money," states Medea Benjamin
cofounder of CODEPINK. "It's about respecting the
right of the people of Berkeley to say no to war!"

The peace group will also hold a press conference at
12pm on February 12 with members of the Berkeley City
Council. Both pro- and anti-war forces will be at the
City Council meeting that starts 7pm (when the
peace-in vigil ends).

Station visit

What occurs to me as I read this? It will be interesting to see how the police 'remain neutral' on Tuesday - yea riiiiiiiiiiiiight!

I am not going to give you Code Pink's main page link. However, you remember how Berkeley City Council's server crashed? Just a thought, but how easy do you think it could possibly be to have Code Pink's site malfunction? The page for Code Pink Contacts has a number of addresses and phone numbers. I am not going to tell any of you what to do with these, but maybe 5 minutes from each of us *could* be very productive. ;)

Only in Berkeley? NOT!!!

WTF is going on in America? Just when you may have thought only Berkeley has something in the water, comes another story of a Mayor being an ass to OUR Marines. Where, you ask? Toledo, Ohio is where. No, I am not kidding! Minding my own business - as I do..lol - I found the following on Blackfive:

Yet Another Mayor Tells Marines to Get Out!

Posted By Laughing_Wolf Courtesy of Instapundit comes this story of a mayor not just ordering Marines out of town, but setting up a police roadblock to enforce same. It seems the mayor of Toledo got his little feelings hurt that he wasn't informed about the Marines returning for an urban training exercise -- an exercise that at least one Marine credited with helping him in real life in Fallujah. A claim by the mayor's spokesman that an alternative site was offered appears to be news to the Marines. Apparently, since he wasn't informed, the mayor decided to show his power (and lack of other attributes) in a fit of pique....

Go read the rest here. Me, being me, I followed the link to the original story:

Staff Sgt. Andre Davis talks to his commanding officer as he leaves the Madison Building after Mayor Carty Finkbeiner requested that the Marines leave the downtown location. ( THE BLADE/JEREMY WADSWORTH )

Mayor to Marines: Leave downtown
He says urban exercises scare people

A company of Marine Corps Reservists received a cold send-off from downtown Toledo yesterday by order of Mayor Carty Finkbeiner.
The 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., planned to spend their weekend engaged in urban patrol exercises on the streets of downtown as well as inside the mostly vacant Madison Building, 607 Madison Ave.
Toledo police knew days in advance about their plans for a three-day exercise. Yet somehow the memo never made it to Mayor Finkbeiner, who ordered the Marines out yesterday afternoon just minutes before their buses were to arrive.
"The mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people," said Brian Schwartz, the mayor's spokesman....

Puleeeeeeeeeze! Go read the rest here. Even over here in Bratville, we have the military practising urban exercises. I would rather see our TROOPS on our streets than some of these ******(fill in your own adjectives) Mayor and Council people.

"...they frighten people,...". Would someone please make sure this Mayor in Toledo tunes in on Tuesday to see what is happening to his Berkeley counterpart? Afraid of the Marines? Mayor Finkbeiner might just find he has waaaaaaay more to be afraid of than the professional Marines in his town. Just sayin' ;)

Camp Berkeley Update

(picture (c) Knee Deep in the Hooah)

Senator DeMint has company. Hot on the heels of Senator DeMint proposing that funds be stripped from Berkeley, it seems others have stepped up to the plate and are now proposing the same thing:

A move to strip Berkeley institutions of federal funds is going forward in Congress in retaliation for last week's city council vote telling the Marines their recruiting station is not welcome in the city.

Meanwhile, Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates issued an apology Wednesday to those who serve in the military for any personal offense taken by the council declaration.

Six Republican senators and an Orange County representative are introducing companion bills called the Semper Fi Act of 2008 that takes away $2 million, including funds from the University of California-Berkeley and a local foundation that provides lunches to the Berkeley Unified School District.

The Senate bill was introduced Wednesday by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C.; Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga.; Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.; Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas; Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla.; and Sen. David Vitter, R-La.

Rep. John Campbell, R-Newport Beach., introduced a companion bill in the House.

The bills seek to take away $243,000 from the Chez Panisse Foundation, which provides school lunches for Berkeley public schools, and $975,000 from UC-Berkeley's Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service to create an endowment and catalog of papers of Rep. Robert Matsui, a press release from DeMint's Washington office said.

(go here and read the rest of this article)

Words have power. How often have I said that? Guess the City Council in Berkeley are learning this. The Senators have this to say:

Senator DeMint: “Berkeley needs to learn that their actions have consequences. Patriotic American taxpayers won’t sit quietly while Berkeley insults our brave Marines and tries to run them out of town. Berkeley City Council members have shown complete ingratitude to our military and their families, and the city doesn’t deserve a single dime of special pet project handouts.”

Senator Cornyn: “The Berkeley City Council insulted our troops and offended people across the country. If the U.S. Marines are not good enough for Berkeley, neither are taxpayer dollars Congress would have sent there this year. That city closed its doors on the same individuals taking bullets on the front lines while fighting for the safety and freedom of families in Berkeley and throughout America.”

Senator Vitter: “The actions of the City Council of Berkeley are in stark contrast to beliefs of the vast majority of Americans who recognize and honor the service and sacrifice of our U.S. Marines. This is simply unacceptable and those funds could be better utilized by the Marine Corps.”

Dr. Coburn: “The actions by the city of Berkeley are deplorable and insulting to those who are serving and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the very freedoms that are being exercised to insult them. I know I stand with the majority of Americans in thanking our service men and women for their selfless service to our nation.”

Senator Inhofe: “Unfortunately, those on the Berkeley city council do not seem to understand the sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Marine Corps. By interfering with military recruiting, the city of Berkeley is hampering our ability to protect this nation. While the city of Berkeley and the protestors are free to say whatever they like, free speech is not a protection from consequence.”

Senator Chambliss: “We need to send a strong message that our military personnel deserve our strongest support. Georgia is a proud military state, and my constituents will be out outraged to know that during a time of war, their taxpayers dollars have been used to reward folks who have insulted and disparaged those who defend this nation every day.”

From Fox News comes this little tidbit:

A companion bill entered in the House has the support of 45 Republicans. No Democrats are supporting either bill. (go read the actual article here)

There's a surprise - NOT! As I replied to M*A in the comments on yesterday's post: "Where are the wannabe Presidents in all this? How come I haven't heard any of THEM loudly condemning the Berkeley City Council?" Did I miss something? No, I didn't think so. But, as we well know, thousands (and maybe even millions. lol) of Americans are speaking up - LOUD and CLEAR! Remember Debbie Lee? You should. She is the amazing mother of Marc Alan Lee, the first Navy Seal killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. She has written an open letter. You don't need my commentary on it, so here it is:

To my fellow Americans:

As many of you know, I am the mother of the 1st Navy Seal who was killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I've dedicated my life to giving voice to my fallen hero, Marc Alan Lee, and all those who have served, or are currently serving, in the United States military - so that we may remain a safe and free nation.

You can't begin to imagine how horrified and angered I was when I learned that the Berkeley City Council had passed three measures that attacked our troops, and called our military men and women, "uninvited" and "unwelcome intruders" in their own country.

For the past few years I had to hear from anti-war liberals about how terrible it was for our troops to be in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Now the anti-military radicals have convinced an American government body to say that our troops don't belong here in America.

So I was more than committed to take action to fight back, but even I wasn't prepared for what would happen next when I watched Code Pink anti-war protestors defacing the U.S. Marine Recruiting Center in Berkeley, then barricading the entry and harassing those who attempted to enter. What shocked and saddened me most was to see the Berkeley Police Department officers stand there and do nothing. They said they were "trying to remain neutral."

We cannot stand for this insanity any longer, my friends.

I have just returned from Iraq and have been with these amazing men and women and seen the progress they are making for our nation in the War on Terror. I cannot sit back quietly after seeing the greatness of our troops and allow them to be insulted and attacked in their own nation. They deserve so much more, and I will fight with every last breath in my body to make sure these heroes are properly honored and respected.

That is why it is time for us to take action to fight back - to fight in honor of our troops, and to stand in solidarity with them at the very location where they are being insulted and defamed.

So next Tuesday, February 12th I will stand in front of the Berkeley City Council Chambers (located at 2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Berkeley, CA) from 5:00 AM until the City Council meets that evening at 7:00 PM.

I will demand that the City Council rescind their three anti-military resolutions and issue a formal apology to all U.S. military service men and women in general, and the United States Marine Corps in particular.

I am asking you to stand with me on this day, as I would greatly welcome the company and the moral support. And I would also like to show the media and the Berkeley City Council that I am not the only one who feels this way.

Last October, when Code Pink first vandalized the U.S. Marine Recruiting Center in Berkeley, Move America Forward organized a rally where hundreds upon hundreds of people showed up with their American flags.

But the sins against our troops are much greater this time - we can never stand for an American government body to attack our troops and call on the public not to cooperate with them.

So let us have a giant turnout on this day. If you cannot join me for this all-day vigil, then please be there at least by 5:00 PM (so you can secure a seat for the 7:00 PM City Council meeting)

My emphasis on that. Our Gold Star Mothers, who are very precious to me and I know to you, too, will NOT be standing alon on February 12th. In the names of all the sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, who have given their lives for the freedom which the Berkeley City Council so abused - tarnished - there will be a HUGE display of solidarity on February 12.

PRESS RELEASE

BERKELEY PUSHBACK GROWS!

Veterans, Pro-Troop & Pro-Military Organizations to Unite In Protest Against Berkeley City Council
on Tuesday, February 12th

*Protest to include members of: Move America Forward, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Soldier’s Angels, Gathering of Eagles, Eagles Up, Blue Star Mothers of America, Free Republic, Lafayette Flag Brigade, Operation: Care and Comfort (San Jose), Families United

(SAN FRANCISCO) – Dozens of pro-military, veterans and pro-troop organizations are uniting for a protest against the Berkeley City Council that will take place this Tuesday, February 12, 2008. The pro-troop demonstration (and protest against the Berkeley City Council) begins at 5:00 AM and will continue through the Berkeley City Council meeting at 7:00 PM.

The demonstrations will occur outside the Berkeley City Council chambers at 2134 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way in Berkeley, CA. The “main event” when the maximum number of protestors are expected will be from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM.

“Our organizations represent a broad cross-section of the pro-troop and pro-veteran community, and we share an equal outrage by the actions of the Berkeley City Council,” said Melanie Morgan, Chairman of Move America Forward (website: www.MoveAmericaForward.org) which is coordinating Tuesday’s pro-troop demonstration.

“Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates said he now wants to apologize to the Marines, yet during last week’s City Council meeting he said explicitly that he was working with Code Pink and that he felt ‘the Marines do not belong here in Berkeley’.”

Our organizations are asking the Berkeley City Council to rescind all three anti-military resolutions they passed and offer a formal, written apology to the U.S. Marine Corps and the military men and women who they insulted by their recent actions.

“While there may be vibrant debate among Americans regarding the war on terror, there should be no debate about whether our American servicemen and women are welcome in all of America’s cities.

“These are America’s finest, and their service and sacrifice have protected this nation and our freedoms, including the freedom of speech which we will be exercising on Tuesday,” Morgan concluded.

On Tuesday, Move America Forward will also be delivering petitions signed by Americans from across this nation calling on the Berkeley City Council to rescind the recently passed anti-military resolutions. The signatures have been collected online through a combined effort of pro-troop and pro-veteran organizations.

For more information about the February 12th pro-troop protest against the Berkeley City Council, contact Mary Pearson at Move America Forward at (916) 441-6197 or at: Mary@MoveAmericaForward.org

Forget where I read this but the organisers of February 12 show of troops support are aware that the media is well known for showing up at things like this waaaaaaaay earlier than the scheduled time for the event, and then reporting that there was NO support, because nobody was there. Imagine that! So MoveAmericaForward has issued an alert (I found it on SA....lol):

ALERT: We have learned that CNN and Fox News Channel, along with all local San Francisco Bay area media outlets, will be present on Tuesday, February 12th when we conduct our day-long pro-troop demonstration and protest of the Berkeley City Council.

We simply MUST have a big crowd of patriotic Americans out on Tuesday - with your American flags - so that all of America can see the pushback we are waging against the Berkeley City Council.

Our pro-troop demonstration begins at 5:00 AM - and you can join us at any time from then on to 7:00 PM when the Berkeley City Council meets and we march inside to make our outrage known, and DEMAND that all three anti-military resolutions be rescinded, and that an apology be issued to the Marines and all military men and women who are serving this nation.

Complete details on the protest time and location - and travel information - available here: www.MoveAmericaForward.org

WEATHER FORECAST FOR TUESDAY: Sunny with a high near 63 degrees.

P.S. We have received feedback that many of you will be traveling long distances to get here - many from out of state. So if you are thinking about coming but aren't sure it will be worth the effort, please realize how many people are making that effort to come. Join us in solidarity for our troops and insure that we have the large numbers we need to show the Berkeley City Council - and the news media - that America will not stand for this disgraceful action!

It occurs to me as I look, again, at that poster, that the Berkeley City Council is really going to find out what "unwelcome" and "intruders" means VERY soon.

Sing with me: "Buddy, can you spare a dime?"

We, the People...Yes, there IS more!

Isn't that awesome? Claire (aka Mrs Hooah!) made this and I'm thinking the fine folks at Berkeley maybe didn't get the memo yet. Not only are the Marines NOT leaving Berkeley, where they are doing just fine, lol but they apparently have opened a whole new base. Love it, Claire, thank you..

Meanwhile, over at 'politics as usual', we have the following: (warning ...TB barf bags can be found on the back of your seats):

As Leta emailed me with this (thanks, I think, Leta...lol)

You're gonna need a LOT of restraint to watch this video!...Check out the second guy to speak - the one who identifies himself as an EX Marine. What a bag of s***!

Such a way with words, our Leta. Couldn't have said it better myself....;) Others are saying it better. It is well accepted that money talks (yea, yea "and bs walks") It appears some businessmen also weighed in to this latest debacle of the Berkeley City Council with THEIR 2 cents' worth. Read on:

Subject: Bravo for the businessmen who stood up....

BERKELEY, Calif. Local officials in this liberal city say it's time for the U.S. Marines to move out.

The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and 'if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.'

The measure passed this week by a vote of 8-1.
*******
Now check this out, here is a letter a businessman wrote to the Mayor of Berkeley. Is this a great country or what?
....................and this is the kind of response it takes from Americans to stand up against the tide of apathy and self serving idiots. http://www.anewtone.com/

Dear Mayor Bates,

In that you and your city have chosen to gravely insult the brave men and women, who have indeed bought you that right with their blood, I am informing you that my company will no longer do business with any of our current suppliers located in the Berkeley, California metro area.

In that my company is in international resort real estate development, and do business with and am associated with, developers and investors worldwide, I am informing all of my contacts, associates and patrons that we will no longer do any business of any sort with anyone living in the Berkeley area.

In that we/MDG Resorts are currently building a state of the art mega-yacht marina, all of the suppliers of Marina equipment, all owners of Yachts, all suppliers of Yacht materials & supplies, all yacht brokers and all tangential yacht business purveyors will likewise be informed that we will not do any business whatsoever with anyone from the Berkeley area.

Likewise all suppliers of building materials, both interior and exterior, currently associated with any of our several resort developments (Brisamar 300+ villas and 200+ condos:
Porto Hussong, 500+ condos, 180 slip mega-yacht marina) both of which I might add have international recognition by virtue of glowing reports in Robb Report, Wall Street Journal, Yacht World, Forbes.

I will likewise inform all of our investors, most of whom are very wealthy yacht owners, casino owners, high net worth international businessmen, of our decision to essentially boycott all products and providers located in, or associated with in any way whatsoever, Berkeley, Ca.

Trust me when I say that having been in the real estate development business for over 35 years, our list of contacts and associates is long and very, very impressive. We, and I personally, are going to recomend that they ALL along with us boycott your city, its purveyors, suppliers, and businesses and CHARITIES of every kind.

You have every right to choose to take the obnoxious anti-military stance you have taken, and as stated, that right was bought for you with the blood of better men than you.

I too have every right to do all that I can to insure that your city suffers consequences arising from that obnoxious, sickening stance.

Cordially,

Brian G Dennard

In another piece from
Melanie Morgan, another business man has pulled out of Berkeley.

Behold... Good Morning "Code Pink Corps"

Our company has just completed an analysis of the funds we have spent during 2007 within the city limits of Berkeley. The number was larger than I expected: $230,716. This amount is broken down in the following categories:

Meals and meeting expenses: $43,807; Printing, copies and imaging services: $36,954. Shipping expenses $18,534; temporary employment $103,954; Office supplies and equipment purchases: $27,467.

Our expenses above in Berkeley increased by about 12% this past year. We have budgeted a similar increase for 2008.

Because of the actions of "CodePink" and the Berkeley City Council we find that we must now exercise our 'freedom to act' and not do business within the City of Berkeley any longer. Over the next five years, the City of Berkeley will lose just from our organization from $1.4 to $1.7 million in business.

We will still grow our business successfully but we will fulfill our service needs, including meals and meeting expenses, at locations OTHER THAN BERKELEY. We are also encouraging our colleagues and business associates to do the same. Many will not be as direct as we are in communicating to you our actions.

While we regret that this action will hurt many worthy individuals and businesses in Berkeley, we are sure to gain a more friendly business environment elsewhere as our business continues to thrive. Gee, ain't freedom and free markets great?

You've made your decisions ... we have made ours.

Now, THAT'S what I call putting your money where your mouth is; in this case, NOT in Berkeley! So not only is Senator DeMint working on withdrawing funds earmarked for Berkeley, the City Council will also be feeling the pinch as businesses withdraw their financial contribution. Free parking not so free anymore ya think?

And just as icing on the cake? Gail sent me the following video that really defies any explanation. Not only are they calling Marines war criminals, these brainiacs also say they believe (they gotta be kidding right?) that WW2 was wrong. That's in amongst the all the usual bs.

For the record? Our Marines in Ft Berkeley are doing just fine. I called them today and had a very nice chat with one of the Marines. I did give him a message for the Code Stinkos, but I doubt he will deliver it. He is a Marine, after all. ;) But I can tell you, that they are getting "...cookies from across America. Thank you Ma'am!" He was very happy to hear that even over here in Bratville the Marines have support.

So, I'm figuring Code Pink and the Berkeley City Council are going to rue the day they took on our Marines. A cold front - a definite chill, has settled over the area. And WE are only just getting warmed up! The new Berkeley City Council song, maybe" "Buddy, can you spare a dime?" sung in harmoney with their friends Code Pink. Pass the cookies, Marine!

Good News Friday(B*N*S*N1)

Found the following earlier this week, and although it is born from a tragedy, an awful event, our troops made sure the outcome IS a good news story:

Fallujah Park Created in Girl's Memory
Stars and Stripes | By Geoff Ziezulewicz | February 06, 2008

FALLUJAH, Iraq — It was Ayah’s first day of school. Her father put the 7-year-old on the bus for her first day in the Iraqi school system, thinking it safer than having her walk the Fallujah streets.

The men of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines had been on the ground for just a few weeks as of Oct. 26, the day Ayah’s school bus passed a Company L convoy.

A Humvee gunner repeatedly motioned for the bus driver to stop, according to company commander Capt. Steve Eastin. The driver did not stop, and the gunner fired a warning shot into the ground in front of Ayah’s bus.

The bullet ricocheted off the street and into the bus before striking Ayah in the chest. Marines offered aid at the scene, but locals refused and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she died.

Maybe it was improved security or a change of attitude in this city. Perhaps it was the quick action of Marines to make reparations, or some other factor. Regardless, the population of Fallujah — a one-time center of insurgent activity, Sunni militancy and anti-U.S. sentiment — did not erupt when one of their children was killed by a Marine bullet last fall.

An investigation found that the Marine had followed escalation-of-force guidelines and that individual is now back at work, Eastin said, declining to name the Marine and opting to speak for the company regarding Ayah.

“He’s going to have to live with that every day,” Eastin said of the Marine.

Immediately after Ayah’s death, Marines were bracing for the worst.

“We didn’t know what was going to happen,” said Cpl. Thomas Weinerzierl, of Milwaukee, a squad leader with the company’s 3rd Platoon....

What happened next is a great story on so many levels. Really! Go and read the rest of this B*N*S*N story here.

You all must know by now that I am a HUGE fan of our K9 teams - Bratdog is quite partial to the Military Working Dogs, too.;) So today's story is a no-brainer:

chrisjack.jpg

ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- Staff Sgt. Christopher Barker, 3rd Security Forces Squadron K-9 handler, shows Jack, a military working dog, appreciation during a ceremony here Dec. 4. Sergeant Barker and MWD Jack received the Bronze Star for support they provided while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sergeant Barker and Jack were sweeping for a weapons cache in an Iraqi field in June 2006, when they discovered 2,000 pounds of explosives buried in eight locations. The cache was set as a trap with an armed anti-personnel mine. Finding this mine possibly saved the life of a Soldier. Throughout Sergeant Barker’s and Jack’s deployment, they conducted more than 350 hours of combat patrols, in which they located more than 3,000 pounds of explosives, 76 automatic weapons and 16 cell phones used for IEDs. The Bronze Star is awarded for bravery, acts of merit, or meritorious service. When awarded for bravery, it is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Armed Forces and the ninth highest military award (including both combat and noncombat awards) in the order of precedence of U.S. military decorations.

Sergeant Baker and Jack, 3rd Security Forces Squadron, deployed from May 28 through Oct. 30, 2006, provided more than 350 hours of combat patrols in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. They were awarded the Bronze Star for bravery, the fourth-highest combat honor in the U.S. Armed Forces.

On June 7, the team located more than 2,000 pounds of explosives in eight buried locations.

Six weeks later, Sergeant Barker and his MWD responded to a detonator of timed explosives in one of the third country national's living quarters.

On July 30, the team responded to an IED that detonated on IA personnel. The IA had engaged and captured four IED members. Sergeant Barker swept the IED vehicle and located five identification cards. Sergeant Barker scanned the crowd of bystanders and located the fifth member attempting to avoid capture by blending into the crowd.

During their deployment, Sergeant Barker and Jack discovered more than 3,000 pounds of explosives, nearly 80 automatic weapons and more than 15 cell phones used to detonate improvised explosive devices.

I took this directly from the SA site (thanks Kassie..lol), and tried to find the link, but couldn't. So you get the whole story right here. That's surely B*N*S*N! Woooooooooooof!

Colour me....

...furious! (I was going to say 'red', but well....you know.lol) It seems the madness continues at Bezerkely. It seems that the 'protesters' continue on proving to the world they have no clue what is really happening in the world outside their bubble zone.

Last week we saw this :

And in the midst of that we have the police remaining neutral. WTH

What planet are these people on? Are they really so totally out to lunch - or stuck in a time warp - that they don't know what is going on? And the police? 'Neutral'? I dunno about Bezerkeley, but up here the police swear an oath to 'serve and protect.' Maybe in America that only holds true if you wear funny jumpsuits and don't like Marines. Asses.

But, Americans who do know what is going on, who are awake and paying attention, have a lot to say. They are answering back. THIS to Fox News:

The following is my email to Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/). Attention Jamie Colby:

Please air this video.
http://www.bayareanewsgroup.com/multimedia/iba/2008/player/?f=0131_code pink

I am worried about those Marines and since the Police there in Berkeley won't assist them in getting into the recruiting station, Federal Marshals should be sent in to assist them!

This is despicable. Medea Benjamin and her group of maladjusted miscreants serve no purpose but to disrupt our government. I have been to Washington, DC seven times last year in support of my Son and his mission for victory in the Middle East. I walked into Senator McConnell's office in September to deliver 67,000 signatures of support for our troops and guess who was laying all over his office? Members of Code Pink. I felt sorry for that poor girl in that office trying to do her job. If the American people knew the collaborations going on in Washington between Code Pink and members of our congress, I believe they would throw these traitors out of office. It is disgusting!

Ask Medea Benjamin what happened to her when she went to Iran recently to disrupt their government. She was immediately thrown in a car at gunpoint and taken to their airport and told to leave their country. She immediately espoused her rights as an American citizen! She is lucky she got out of their with her head!

Please air this video as it is apparent our Marines need Federal Marshals out there to allow them easy access into that recruiting station so they can conduct the affairs of our government. They are our Heroes and they should not have to fight these Code Pink morons to do their job. I'm worried about them and they deserve respect and right now, our unwavering support!

Thank You

I did give you the Police Chief contact earlier. So what are you waiting for? One of our own ventured into the lions' den (actually that is an insult to lions, who have way more pride than theses dimtwits). Anyhoo, our intrepid reader, who really DOES support our troops, sent me these pictures last night:

Photobucket

Military predators? I suppose that beats being called "murderers", but there is more.

Photobucket

Would somebody pleeeeeeeeeeease show these asses (hey, it's early here. Choose your own adjective!) the training video in the top post.

Been wondering where Cindy Sheehan is these days? Seems she whose name we don't like uttering might not be running for political office. Most of us had forgotten she exists, but not so the Code Stinkos at Bezerkely:

Photobucket

Remember the mother and dauther in my post from yesterday? Seems those two, and women like them, could teach the women of Code Stinko a thing or two. From yesterday there was also this:
Photobucket

These 'women' do NOT speak for me, but yea, I am mad as hell, and I HAVE arisen. Love the way these idiots use words. It is my sincere wish that these and all their cohorts learn that words have power. You know, just as the City Council is learning that once you say something, you have to stand by your words. It seems that the City Council are finding out that their resolution against the Marines, that loosely worded, ill conceived missive, has awoken the power of people across the US (and yes, even beyond to Bratville.lol)

CODE PINK LOSES,
BERKELEY KISSES ASS...Betcha they were drowning in phone calls, mail, complaints...it is not favorable to talk against our MARINES.

8:52 PST Berkeley -- A week after blasting the Marines as "unwelcome intruders" in Berkeley, two City Council members want the city to back off the declaration that ignited the wrath of the nation's right wing and inspired a Republican senator to try to sever Berkeley's federal funding.
Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli on Monday proposed that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops.
The City Council will vote on Olds' and Capitelli's two proposals at its meeting next Tuesday.
"I think we shouldn't be seen across the country as hating the Marines," said Olds, who voted against last week's proposals. "If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."
The brouhaha started last week when the council passed two items condemning the Marine recruiting center on Shattuck Square, which opened about a year ago. The first called on the city clerk to send a letter to the Marines telling them they're unwelcome, and the second item granted Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office every Wednesday afternoon and allowed the group to operate a loudspeaker.
After the items passed, the council was besieged with criticism from right-wing groups and military supporters. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., proposed that the federal government cut off funds for Berkeley, including lunch programs, ferry service and UC Berkeley.( WAY TO GO)
Olds said she heard from hundreds of people angered by the city's action, including many in her Berkeley hills district.
"People are so mad about this. They have relatives in the service, and now they think they're not welcome in Berkeley," she said. "My twin brother was a Marine in World War II. He'd be turning in his grave if he saw this."
The council appears split on the idea of backing down. Some council members said the original proposals inadvertently insulted veterans and those currently serving in the military. Others said Berkeley should stand by its convictions.
"People are used to Berkeley taking a stand for peace, but you have to do it intelligently," said Councilman Kriss Worthington, who voted against sending the letter calling the Marine Corps unwelcome. "You don't want to slap one group in the face and then, the next minute, slap the other group. I think we have an obligation to be thoughtful and sensitive and not be counterproductive to the cause of peace."
Councilwoman Dona Spring said the council should not be cowed by the volume of hate mail and threats.
"I still oppose the Marines recruiting in Berkeley because it's one way of protesting this wasteful war," she said. "Our military policy is a shambles. But we're not in opposition to the Marines; we oppose the policy that directs the Marines."
Meanwhile, the Code Pink protesters said they were disappointed that Berkeley might rescind its letter to the Marines.
"I hope they're not acting out of intimidation," said Code Pink spokeswoman Medea Benjamin. "Berkeley is a city of peace, and a recruiting station does not fit Berkeley's values."
Mayor Tom Bates, a former Army captain, said it probably wouldn't hurt if the council clarified its position.
"It's a symbol, but there are consequences to symbols," he said. "A lot of people think we're anti-Marine, but there's a difference between the warriors and the war. This is an attempt to clarify that."
E-mail Carolyn Jones at carolynjones@sfchronicle.com.
Looks like Code Pink is not intimidating enough, with a bunch of gooks wearing PINK carrying around hate signs, do you even have to ask ? Maybe they should change colors, wear white hoods, that may work. Gotta love the power of letters and right wing groups when something needs to be changed.
(From the SF Chronicle)

Today's final commentary? Apart from all the bs, maybe someone should call the local SPCA (or the cruelty to animals) or whatever animal defence group you all have down there. From our brave witness yesterday - who DID go into the recruiters' office and thank them for their service - comes this picture. Would somebody please rescue this dog?

Photobucket

And as I look at all this, And read the miles of ink flowing, I am reminded of Leonard Cohen's song (one of my all-time faves btw):

...From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst....

This isn't over - oh no, not for a long time. If nothing else, my hope is that these Code Stinkos and their Berkeley City Council co-conspirators learn what our Marines, and ALL our troops already have learned oh so well. Freedom of speech isn't free. Period.

Stay tuned.

"Games" children play

Today I have seen something that I would like ALL the protesters in America to be forced to watch. Those protesters who insist that the coalition troops have no business being in Iraq or Afghanistan. What I will show you is not new. Throughout history terrorists have used children as weapons. Today, in countries we tend to largely ignore, marauding bands of thugs are kidnapping children and arming them as soldiers. These children are treated as just so much fodder, expendable, as they are taught to kill the enemy.

Today, the US released videos found that provide irrefutable proof that, if our troops leave Iraq without finishing our mission, future generations of Iraqi children will be indoctinated in the terrorist ways.

'Al-Qaeda boys' in training video
Iraq's ministry of defence spokesman Mohammed al-Askari stands near a video on a screen during a press conference in Baghdad, Iraq, on 6 February 2008
Iraq said the tapes were a "sign of desperation"

US and Iraqi forces have issued video footage which they say shows children under the age of 11 being armed and trained by al-Qaeda.

The US military said five tapes had been found when coalition forces raided suspected al-Qaeda hideouts north of Baghdad in December.

The videos showed boys brandishing guns and grenades during training exercises.

The Americans hope the images might persuade Iraqis to turn against the Islamic militants, correspondents say.

The footage compiled from the tapes features around 20 young boys running around with pistols, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

In one scene, the boys take part in a mock kidnapping, where they force the volunteer to kneel in the dust with a pistol at his head....(read the rest of this report here)

I have watched the footage, and I have to tell you, it made me sick. Every image turns my stomach. Some frames errily simulate those scenes we have all come to dread when western hostages have been slaughtered on camera with the murderers standing behind them.

Is this what the twits at Berkeley would wish on future generations of Iraqi children? Is this what the protesters around the world would want on our own shores, as the future for OUR children? It is well known that children become what they are shown and taught - what they LIVE from early childhood. These Iraqi children in these videos are being groomed to be killers, terrorists. The video I am posting below can be found here.

Make no mistake: this war we are in IS a war to the death; the death of terrorism. How can we look away, withdraw our troops, and leave the children of Iraq to this fate? How can we?

Wednesday Hero

This week's hero is a good one. Robert Cone is the second Cousin of Wednesday Hero's partner in crime, Greta.

Robert S. Cone
85 years old from Delray Beach, Florida
506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division

Surrounded by family, feted by a U.S. congressman and a Veterans of Foreign Wars color guard, one of the few surviving members of the "Filthy Thirteen" was honored on October 8, 2006 in a backyard on Massapoag Avenue.

Robert S. Cone, 85, now of Delray Beach, Fla., finally received the 13 military medals he was due for his service on D-Day during World War II, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, POW medal and Presidential Unit Citation.

"To tell you the truth, I never expected it. I'm very honored to get it and really feel good about it," Cone said.

"He's finding it an honor, and he's a little embarrassed, to be honest," said Cone's son, Edward R. Cone, 45, who hosted the family barbecue that included a visit from U.S. Rep. Stephen F. Lynch.

Only a few members remain of the 101st Airborne Division's famed "Filthy Thirteen," an elite parachute and demolition unit that volunteered for a suicide mission on June 5, 1944, the eve of the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

The Filthy Thirteen, who shared a Quonset Hut in England, were a group of "pretty bad boys," Edward Cone said, renowned for hard-living and fierce fighting. They are believed to be the inspiration for the 1967 movie "The Dirty Dozen," although none of the Filthy Thirteen was a convict.

The unit's mission was to parachute behind enemy lines on the night before D-Day to blow up bridges and impede the Nazis.

Many were killed on the drop. The survivors found it difficult to reunite on the ground because the pilots had panicked when the Germans opened fire.

Cone said he spent two days in a hedgerow battle and was shot in the right arm. When he escaped to a French farmhouse, the owner turned him over to the Nazis and he became a prisoner of war.

His unit and his family thought he was dead. His mother, in Roxbury, received a telegram from the War Department saying he had been killed in action.

Cone spent 11 months in three POW camps in Germany before being liberated by the Russians near the Polish border. He fought alongside the Russians as they made their escape, his son said.

Cone walked to freedom through Poland, Russia and Romania, journeyed by ship to Egypt and was eventually flow to Italy, finally making his way home.

All the medal ceremonies had taken place without him.

Cone married Ida, now his wife of 61 years; became a postal worker and plumber; raised three children in Hull; and spoke very little about the war, Edward Cone said.

About four years ago, Edward Cone decided to find out whether any of his father's Army colleagues were still alive.

He found the Filthy Thirteen's leader, Jake McNiece, in Oklahoma, and put his father in touch by telephone. Their conversation was recorded by the BBC and played on the anniversary of D-Day.

Later, the History Channel filmed its own segment on the pair, which still airs, Edward Cone said.

The group reunited in Taccoa, Ga., the home of their jump school.

"My Dad and I drove from here to Georgia. I heard everything on that trip," Edward Cone said. "Three were alive from the unit. They talked and drank and told stories for days."

Three years ago, McNiece published a book, "The Filthy Thirteen: From the Dustbowl to Hitler's Eagle's Nest: The 101st Airborne's Most Legendary Squad of Combat Paratroopers."

It was McNiece who mentioned that Cone was due a few medals. Edward Cone and his fiance, Kate Guthrie of Leominster, who works at the Statehouse, gathered documentation and contacted Lynch.

The result was the Sunday party, also attended by Cone's daughters, Ronna Townsend of Monroe Township, N.J., and Natalie Gaudet of Hampton, N.H., and most of his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Cone admits he never talked much about the war before.

"I really didn't," Cone said. "But they insisted I tell the grandchildren and the great grandchildren. So I talk to them. I tell them stories. I tell them true stories. They all enjoy it."

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.
We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived

Mothers lead the way

Here at Tanker Bros, I have often told you of families serving in the military; families deployed together. I think by now you all know that if there was a way, I would volunteer and join the military. Sad to admit, I am too old, and this mum's bod just wouldn't last through Basic.

I found the following story on Stand-To! and just HAVE to share it with you:

Mother, Daughter Make Service Family Affair:

PVT Michelle Silverman (left) and PVT Amber Pearson (right) discuss their experiences during military training.
Setting out to fulfill a life-long dream of joining the Army, Michelle Silverman asked her daughter Amber Pearson to go down to the recruiter's office with her for moral support. Little did she know that her daughter would be joining the Army right along with her.

Silverman, 37, was a homemaker taking some courses at the local college who always felt that something was missing from her life. She always wanted to join the Army, but put marriage and children first.

Three children and 18 years later, Silverman headed down to the recruiter's office to see if she could make a dream come true.

"My husband and I had been talking about it lot, so when he said, 'I think that would be great; I think you can do it,' I called my daughter up and asked her to go down to the Army recruiter's office with us," said Silverman....

Go here, and read the rest of this very inspiring story. Despite what the msm would have us all believe, there are many American families who do more than 'support the troops': they BECOME the troops! Way to go, mum! HOO-frickin-AAH!

Canadian, eh?

As you may know, the debate continues in Canada about Canada's role in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, as the politicians posture and waste oxygen, our military is just getting on with their mission:

Canadian General assumes command in Afghanistan

Tuesday, February 05, 2008
Project Number:08-0101

OTTAWA, Ontario – Major-General Marc Lessard assumed command of Regional Command (South) RC(S) on 2 February in Kandahar, from Major-General Jacko Page of the United Kingdom. As the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops in southern Afghanistan, MGen Lessard will be responsible for Canadian and coalition operations in that area until November 2008.

MGen Lessard leads a force of approximately 12,000 soldiers from Canada and 11 other nations. During the Transfer of Authority Ceremony at Kandahar Airfield MGen Lessard said that his focus will be to maintain the initiative in the south through an intense series of operations and activities.

"I see two priorities; firstly, to increase security within the region in order to ensure the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan exercises its legitimate authority," explained MGen Lessard. "The second priority is to coordinate to the greatest extent, the aspects of governance and development within the overall security framework."

RC(S) encompasses six provinces in the southern region of Afghanistan. These include: Day Kondi, Zabul, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Helmand and Nimruz. The role of RC(S) is to conduct military operations in the south to assist the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in the establishment and maintenance of a safe and secure environment...(read the rest here)

Some if us Canadians "get" it. Thank YOU to Major-General Lessard, and ALL our troops!

Oh Canada!

I remember last year when Tanker Brothers did the week long tribute to the Vietnam War and its Veterans, walking into the local RSL (Returned Soldiers League) and meeting many Vets for the first time. I had, of course, seen them on ANZAC Day at the Services in the town square, but this was my chance to extend my hand and express my gratitude for what they had done. One of the Vets introduced himself and offered to show me the memorabilia room, while another watched on. As I entered the room the 2nd Vet walked along behind me as the first began to explain where different photos and memorabilia had been from. When we came to one picture the 2nd Vet stepped forward and began to tell me the story behind the photo. His eyes filled with tears as he remembered that day and when he had finished telling the story I held out my hand and thanked him. He shook it and thanked me in return. I have no idea what he was thinking at that moment but a few weeks later he told me that they had all appreciated someone from my generation thanking them for what they had done. I loved visiting the RSL, hearing the stories, looking at pictures but most of all, I loved how such a simple gesture could change the way someone percieved themself. They had never been treated like heroes, never been shown respect and worst of all, never been thanked for their service to our country.

Such a simple gesture....

I remembered this on Rememberance Day this year. I was in a shopping centre in the afternoon when I came across a stall of Airforce Veterans with their poppies. I was with a friend and I asked her to give me a minute. I ducked off to a donut stand and brought a dozen fresh donuts for them. By the time I got back my friend had donated her money and had her poppy on. I handed them the donuts and my donation, took my poppy, thanked them for their service and left. I couldnt tell you what was better, the smiles on their faces or the way I felt.

Such a simple gesture....

I remembered this when I saw the following clip. Lets post this everywhere gang and show people just how simple it can be!!

Fly the 'friendly' skies but...

....don't land at Oakland if you are military. Remember last September when a group of Marines coming home from Iraq were treated in a digraceful manner by the personnel there? The unwelcome home was all over the internet and the msm.:

"On September 27, 204 Marines and soldiers who were returning from Iraq were not allowed into the passenger terminal at Oakland International Airport. Instead they had to deplane about 400 yards away from the terminal where the extra baggage trailers were located."

This was not a security measure. After going through super-tight security, checking for contraband, ammunition and explosives in Kuwait, the soldiers and Marines had been allowed in the terminal building in Germany and at JFK in New York. But on the far-left coast they were quarantined from civilians.

This smacks of the bad old days in the Bay Area when returning Vietnam vets were spat upon. Some high-ranking military person should make sure it never happens again. Our Iraq vets should be welcome anywhere and everywhere....

That's from an op/ed by John Gibson at Fox News here. This story sparked outrage across blogland. Michelle Malkin:

In short: “On September 27th 204 Marines and soldiers who were returning from Iraq were not allowed into the passenger terminal at Oakland International Airport.Instead they had to deplane about 400 yards away from the terminal where the extra baggage trailers were located. This was the last scheduled stop for fuel and food prior to flying to Hawaii where both were based. The trip started in Kuwait on September 26th with a rigorous search of checked and carry on baggage by US Customs. All baggage was x-rayed with a ‘backscatter’ machine AND each bag was completely emptied and hand searched. After being searched, checked bags were marked and immediately placed in a secure container. Carry on bags were then x rayed again to ensure no contraband items were taken on the plane. While waiting for the bus to the airport, all personnel were in quarantined in a fenced area and were not allowed to leave.” Nevertheless, Oakland forbade them from entering its terminal. According to the Marine, a Lieutenant who served in Afghanistan with the same unit in 2006 noted that Oakland had treated troops the same way before. He “was almost arrested by the TSA for getting belligerent about them not letting the Marines into the terminal,” despite more rigorous screening prior to landing in Oakland. Both JFK airport and in Germany had no problem with the Marines entering their terminals....(here)

She was not alone in roundly condemning this disrespectful behaviour of OUR Marines.
The uproar was so loud that TSA issued a statement. It read:

TSA Statement on Incident Involving U.S. Troops at Oakland International Airport

On Thursday, September 27, 2007 North American Airlines flight #1777 carrying soldiers and marines landed at Oakland International Airport from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) where passengers were screened by U.S. Customs upon landing from overseas.

At no time were service men and women prohibited from entering the sterile area of Oakland International Airport by TSA personnel or regulations. Airport officials, the airline and ground handling company coordinated the arrival and all services associated with this flight, including refueling, refreshing supplies on the aircraft, maintenance checks and all passenger services.

TSA personnel across the country have worked closely with airports to ensure the utmost care when handling flights involving our troops and will continue to facilitate their movement to the greatest extent possible while ensuring a high level of security for all travelers. (here)

Whatever! To read that is to imagine a horde of unruly Marine, weapons at the ready, running amok among the public. NOT! We all know that's not how Marines behave, and, to quote our friend in the sandbox in a private email to me ;).....: '...for the record... whenever we deplane, we leave a small guard force to keep watch over our weapons. So there was really absolutely no issue...'(brought to you by the letters M and G...lol)

So an enquiry was launched by the Transportation Dept. And what a surprise (sarcasm folks!):

Airport found legitimate in troop treatment

By Audrey Hudson
January 31, 2008

The Oakland International Airport did not break any laws or regulations when it denied 200 Marines and soldiers access to the passenger terminal during a layover last year from Iraq to the troops' home base in Hawaii, the Transportation Department says.

Calvin L. Scovell III, the department's inspector general, blamed the mix-up on security concerns and a communication failure between the Defense Department and the Homeland Security Department.

The contract to allow military layovers at the California airport "did not require that military personnel have access to the airport terminal; it only required that military personnel be allowed to deplane and stretch their legs on stops lasting over one hour," said a report released yesterday to House lawmakers who requested an investigation into the matter.

The Sept. 27 layover was the last stop for fuel and food, but the troops, who were returning from a tour in Iraq, were denied access to food and bathroom facilities.

A Marine reported the incident to Rep. John L. Mica, Florida Republican and ranking member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and said it "felt like being spit on."

Airport officials were concerned that the flight's ground staff could not provide "an adequate level of escort and control of such a large group of military personnel in or around the terminal area," the inspector's report said.

The report also said the Homeland Security and Defense departments have no coordinated policy to conduct security screenings or a communications process to allow the Marines and soldiers in passenger terminals.

The review also found "miscommunication about the proper storage and safeguarding of weapons carried on board aircraft during the layover" and that the airport "could not confirm that weapons [on the plane] would be secured and safeguarded in accordance with Department of Defense regulations and that the Marines and soldiers would leave their weapons on board."...

Isn't that just too precious? Go read the rest of this story at Washington Times here. Excuuuuuuse me? Our troops have been deployed, and they come home to an ungrateful nation, and are welcomed in a way reminiscent of another era before they even leave the airport? WTH!

Quite apart from personal emails from our deployed heroes sharing their disgust, it seems some military folks decided to publicly address such shortcomings within Oakland airport. A Lt. Nixon wrote about - and TO - the TSA:

So the TSA has Got This Blog...

First caught wind of it while watching the news, but the TSA (the kind folks who do the airport security) has got a blog were you can voice your rage and discontent. The admin person on this blog must've gotten boned with the worst Public Relations job in history since Kramer's PR guy following the Laugh Factory fiasco, so I admire his or her efforts to be nice:

Some have been downright mean and cranky but that’s okay too. For most people, this is the first chance to reach out directly to TSA and tell us about your experiences and we very much want to hear from you.

Well hell. I wouldn't be a true Navy junior officer if I wasn't a complete bitter wiseass, so I thought I'd drop them a comment concerning their handling us military personnel coming from Kuwait to Atlanta on R&R (a true story).

To Whom It May Concern,

Recently, I was with a group of military personnel serving in Iraq and Afghanistan traveling from Kuwait to Atlanta for our 2-week R&R period. I appreciate the Atlanta TSA personnel thanking us for our service when we first stepped foot on American soil. That was a fine example of Southern hospitality! However, I found it a little baffling that we had to take off our combat boots, dogtags, belts, etc. to go through a metal detector. My questions are three-fold: 1) Why would we need to go through security when we just got off a plane that departed from an airport in Kuwait with very strict security measures and customs procedures. 2) In no cases to my knowledge have terrorists been wearing US-issued military uniforms with valid military IDs, why not just let us bypass security, and 3) Having us get undressed in such a fashion while in uniform in front of other civilian passengers was a little embarrassing, and it undermines the professional demeanor that we would like to ensure the American public understands we uphold. Thanks for your time!

Very Respectfully,
LT Nixon

You really should check Lt. Nixon's blog. It is priceless.. here. Turns out, that a 'floor level employee' read Lt. Nixon, and felt compelled to answer him:

TSA addresses my gripe!

...and someone from the TSA responded by the handle of "tsa tos ny":

LT Nixon,
As a TSA Screening Manager I would 1st like to apologize for the fact that we have to screen you at all and would just like to say that the screening force more than respects the active duty military personel. ..

...You have our utmost respect and I personally want to thank you for your sacrifices. Many of our screening force are retired or reserve military.

Unfortunately, the TSA "powers that be" don't see things the same way we floor level employees do. They quote such names as Timothy McVeigh and other "Domestic Terrorists". I just want you to know that there is a blog site type of idea board for TSA personel only and there is MASSIVELY OVERWHELMING criticism of the very policy you are talking about. We (the actual people that work at the checkpoints - not the policy makers) feel that military personel in uniform, traveling on orders should be exempt from screening or at the very least exempt from the liquids/shoes and other more intrusive rules. We are fighting to get those rules changed for military personel....(go read the rest at Lt. Nixon's blog here.)

All well and good of course, and kudos to that employee for saying they are trying to get the rules changed for military personnel. Such "failure to communicate" bs is totally unacceptable. The truth of the matter is that, failing the lack of at LEAST the red carpet treatment as these brave men and women return to the country who they have just served honourably, all the airport 'authorities' had to do was talk to the Marines. All they had to do was ask, and their ridiculous objections would have been addressed to satisfy their paranoia. Our Marines are more than capable of explaining things ;)

The airport authorities may NOT have broken any laws per se, but good grief. The fact that this inicident is not an isolated occurrence tells me something needs to change - NOW!

While we all hold our breath waiting for the bureacraps to change their MO, I suggest a close watch is kept on airports like Oakland. NO military personnel - EVER - should be treated so shabbily. Not in America and NOT ON MY WATCH!

Brat (H/T to MG - there's a surprise..lol)
